Macaroni cheese

What sides do you serve with it? I can’t stand the stuff and never really serve it. But I have guests including dc, one of whom apparently adores it. So I’m going to do one. I’m not worried about that at all, I make a good cheese sauce and am under strict instructions to make it extra cheesy! However I just can’t get my head round what you are meant to serve with it. To me it screams for veg, maybe grilled tomatoes and mushrooms? Or peas? I did think salad to keep it light but can’t get past the through of gloopy cheese sauce getting on my leaves! I like the idea of leeks but not very summery.
Should I do garlic bread? Do I need to add any more carb, it’s stodgy enough as it is?
I fear I’m over thinking this!

We always have it with roasted tomatoes and maybe some kind of salad to cut through the richness?

30degreesandmeltinghere · 26/07/2021 21:36

I serve with cauliflower, cabbage and garlic bread.. Bbc Good Food recipe..

mynameiscalypso · 26/07/2021 21:36

Sorry, I realise you said salad. I tend to keep my salad on a side plate with a punchy dressing to avoid glooping onto the leaves!

Pop some slices of tomato on the top with some cheese before you bob it under the grill. And serve with garlic bread and salad. Bloody lovely! I did it last night 😋

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2021 21:37

We always have it with peas and broccoli

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 26/07/2021 21:38

A nice tangy salad

Egghead68 · 26/07/2021 21:39

I like it with peas and tomatoes and I put cauliflower in it as well as macaroni to lighten it up a bit. Food of the gods!

StevieNix · 26/07/2021 21:41

I love it with a green salad, cherry tomatoes, maybe some thinly sliced red onion. Corn on the cob might be nice?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/07/2021 21:42

Salad, and sometimes grilled tomatoes.

We tend to have bread rolls or French stick to mop up any remaining cheese sauce.

Yellow85 · 26/07/2021 21:43

Hell yes to garlic bread. A decent one - like a ciabatta. Needs to soak up the access sauce! I also serve with roasted tomatoes and salad

Yellow85 · 26/07/2021 21:43

^^excess

mafted · 26/07/2021 21:44

We have it with roast ham and some kind of greens.

NormanSicily · 26/07/2021 21:44

Broccoli in our house. Have you tried the recipe that adds butternut squash and feta to the sauce, amazing and great for veg refusing kids!

NotThisWeekSatan · 26/07/2021 21:44

I think it needs green veg to offset the paleness on the plate - peas, broccoli, green beans.

NeverRTFT · 26/07/2021 21:45

Chipolatas
Something green

SionnachRua · 26/07/2021 21:45

A bit of grilled chicken and spinach mixed in is nice. Or roasted tomatoes as someone said already.

Tbh when I eat Mac n cheese I just accept it's not the healthiest Grin Great with toasted breadcrumbs.

5zeds · 26/07/2021 21:46

To me the macaroni cheese is the side and you need something that “goes” with bland cheesey mush. I’d think southern fried chicken and green beans and/or tomatoes.

ShinySquirrel · 26/07/2021 21:46

It doesn't need anything else. It's perfect as is.

Saying that, garlic bread and roasted tomatoes on the side sounds good.

BillyRaywasapreachersson · 26/07/2021 21:46

We just have a bowl of it and eat it in front of the telly. There are some foods that I do not think necessitate greenery and Mac and cheese is one of them.

NursieBernard · 26/07/2021 21:47

I always serve it with a green bean salad.

gurglebelly · 26/07/2021 21:47

Definitely salad (with lots of tomato) over here 😋

Germolenequeen · 26/07/2021 21:49

Birds Eye peas and Heinz tomato ketchup 😋

TheGirlWhoLived · 26/07/2021 21:49

When are you meant to put it under the grill!? Dd1 and I can’t eat dairy but I make it for dd2 but I didn’t realise the grill bit… I just make a roux, add in the milk slowly, stir it a lot until it becomes saucy and add the cheese with the heat off? Should I then add more cheese and grill in a dish like I would a pasta bake or just grill it on the basis it has cheese already in?

Galassia · 26/07/2021 21:49

I like it with a breadcrumb topping and broccoli/cauliflower/asparagus on the side.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 26/07/2021 21:51

Sliced tomatoes on top are nice. And I like salad as a contrast to rich pasta dishes. As per pp’s serve it in a separate bowl to avoid “contamination”. And yes to garlic bread! I like ciabatta rolls, sliced and brushed with olive oil, lots of crushed garlic, and chopped fresh chives, then just grill for 5-6 minutes.
