And what's a quick summary of the book?
Don't know what to buy!
Thanks!

Can you narrow it down a bit - fiction, nonfiction? Any partic topics? Do you want a book you can finish on the plane? How fast a reader are you?

A Harry Hole novel by Jo Nesbo. They're thriller/crime/detective fiction. Plenty of plot twists. The Snowman (#7 in the series) is about a possible serial killer and is set in Norway.

One of James Herriot's books.

The Goldfinch

Vet experiences. They made a TV series all creatures great and small
The books are far better.

Sunshinebrunshine · 26/07/2021 08:33

Invisible women. It is a non fiction book about how women have been excluded from many areas of research /policy etc. And the impact it has had on decisions.

DeeplyMovingExperience · 26/07/2021 08:37

The Secret Children by Alison McQueen. Epic.

I haven't read in years so don't really know what I like anymore.

Not science fiction or horror. I don't like sort of girly books about relationship breakdowns or books with kids getting hurt.

A Bill Bryson to make you laugh.

I've just started a jodi picot book.... Nineteen. Gets very good reviews. About the aftermath of a school shooting.

I'm currently listening to Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce. Really, really enjoying it. She's the author or the BBC one drama Appletree Yard

Apple Tree Yard is by Louise Doughty and is a very good book. I recommend Excellent Women by Barbara Pym - it's very funny and engaging while also being well-written and quite light-hearted.

overthethamesfromyou · 26/07/2021 08:55

Just finished American Dirt. Loved it, really gripping

Fairyliz · 26/07/2021 08:57

Life after life by Kate Atkinson, loved it.
It’s about a woman re-living her life, a sort of sliding doors scenario.

Louise Doughty wrote Appletree Yard - which is a very good read, much better than Blood Orange.

Girl, Woman, Other is a great read - telling the intertwined stories of a range of women.

I also loved Secret River by Kate Grenville which tells the story of the transportation to Australia of an English man and his family at the start of the nineteenth century.

PeppermintTea2021 · 26/07/2021 09:00

The Sweet pea trilogy by C J Skuse. It's about a very normal woman who goes on killing sprees but only people who deserve it (usually) and she protects children and animals. It's also very funny.

DonLewis · 26/07/2021 09:04

I'd go for a couple in case you can't get on with one of them.

Something epic like The Poisonwood Bible? Or Sebastian Faulks Birdsong don't be put off that it's a war novel, it's captivating.

My new favourite author is Ann Patchet, Bel Canto is brilliant. Set in an unnamed South American country about a party that's hijacked and the party goers are kept captive, it's a dark comedy, kind of.

Something lighter? I'm afraid I'm not your woman for that kind of recommendation.

The novel that was all the hype in lockdown: Where The Crawdads Sing it's an opinion divider, but I enjoyed it.

And finally, Tara Westover's memoir Educated I could not put this down. It could so easily be a misery memoir, but it's not.

A thousand splendid suns

Ducks, Newburyport it's the inner musings of a suburban mother. It's about nothing and everything all at the same time. The book was over 1000 pages written in a single sentence. It is brilliant as an audiobook. Also about 45 hours long, so you won't run out. One of the best books I've read.

Mangozesty · 26/07/2021 09:24

The Stand , Stephen King. That would get me through the long flight there, and back Grin

TheDevils · 26/07/2021 09:28

spotcheck · 26/07/2021 09:29
