And what's a quick summary of the book?
Don't know what to buy!
Thanks!

Definitely The Poisonwood Bible.

Afraid of the Light by Douglas Kennedy

It’s just been published. I’ve devoured everything else he’s written. Strong female characters, often leads. Thought provoking. Often set against a particular political background. Gripping. Great holiday page turners.

Gillespie and I by Jane Harris. Set in Glasgow during the Great Exhibition. That is all I will say-read it.

Champagneforeveryone · 26/07/2021 09:59

I recently really enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club, far more than I imagined I ever would. We use Audible for audio books and it was very well read (which can make or break an audio book)

First 5 Aubrey and Maturin books by patrick o'brien!

PleaseStopExplaining · 26/07/2021 12:13

I was going to suggest one of Tracy Rees books, they are historical and long. Florence Grace, Amy Snow and The House at Silvermoor are all fab. I liked The Love Note but not sure you will.

That said, reading the thread I’d also add a vote for The Poisonwood Bible

Mythos - its a retelling of the greek myths, read and written by Stephen Fry.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/07/2021 12:25

American dirt which was mentioned above is fabulous.

TrueRefuge · 26/07/2021 12:27

I came here to say The Goldfinch; it's long, and I loved it,but I think it has split opinion.

Educated was excellent! Gripping read, really inspirational. Hard going at times though.

I love a bit of comedy, David Sedaris is an excellent and hilarious writer, you could read a few of his articles online and see what you think. I think one of his books would be great to kickstart a holiday. I like Naked.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts - Australian man arrives in Mumbai and has a very interesting few years.

The Kingdom by Jo Nesbo - the most gripping thing I've read in years. A stand alone thriller about two brothers, and a homecoming that turns deadly bringing long-buried family secrets to the surface.

All of the Robert Galbraith books. A detective duo solve crimes in London.

covidcathy · 26/07/2021 12:29

Shantaram! It's really, really long. But it's got everything. It's made me laugh, made me cry and I've still got another 10 hours to go despite having listened to it already for several weeks.

I bought it off the back of a recent "what's the best book you've ever read" thread, where it was mentioned several times.

If you want something light and funny that you can listen to whilst doing a puzzle book etc, any of Marian Keyes' Walsh sister books.

covidcathy · 26/07/2021 12:30

Ah, snap with PP Smile

MrsOnions0 · 26/07/2021 12:34

3rd Shantaram

@overthethamesfromyou

Just finished American Dirt. Loved it, really gripping
I'm going to finish American Dirt today too. I'm realy enjoying it.

Also read The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue which was good.

Next on my list is probably Midnight Library.

QueenofBrickdon · 26/07/2021 12:38

I came on to say The Goldfinch too. It's the longest book I've read recently and I really enjoyed it.

jobsagudden · 26/07/2021 12:41

I Am Piglrim - Terry Hayes, fave book of all time. Spy thriller, amazingly well written, never read a thriller like it.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 26/07/2021 12:44

Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father.

Waspie · 26/07/2021 13:02

I saw the thread title and immediately though - "The Blind Assassin" by Margaret Attwood. I read it many years ago on a flight back from Brisbane and it just made the hours fly past. A really immersive novel.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 26/07/2021 13:44

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

Really nice book, funny in places, a bit sad in others, lovely characters. Well written and engaging. Not too difficult a read either.

My favourite book of recent years is Hearts Invisible Furies but I wouldn't want you crying on the flight!

Polkadots2021 · 26/07/2021 14:18

@MeltinHere

And what's a quick summary of the book? Don't know what to buy! Thanks!
War & Peace...I wish I hadn't read it yet as I love it so much! Great for a long flight as it's really long.
HasaDigaEebowai · 26/07/2021 14:19

Interesting that people rave about the Hearts Invisible Furies. I was interested enough not to abandon it but that’s about as far as it went. I always wonder why people love it.

Station eleven is a fab book.

Photosymphysis · 26/07/2021 14:22

@Sunshinebrunshine

Invisible women. It is a non fiction book about how women have been excluded from many areas of research /policy etc. And the impact it has had on decisions.
This.

Everyone should read it.
