My teen has walked her foot into a state - hideous pic

My 16 year old has been doing her duke of Edinburgh and has come home like this on one foot.

We bandaged it round last night but it’s weeping today!

I am in two minds whether it needs actual medical attention at this point but I am terrible at deciding these things!

What do people think - leave it or ask gp?

Competed blister plasters and see how she goes for a day or two ?

dementedpixie · 26/07/2021 07:54

Could you try a large hydrocolloid dressing on it as it looks like a burst blister?
Might be able to get a large one from the chemist. Dont think it looks infected or anything

Makinganewthinghappen · 26/07/2021 07:55

This is it this morning it’s just weeping - I have to say I hate feet so I’m trying not to stare at it too much Shock

Oww! Poor her. I’m no expert, but I would bathe it in diluted Dettol and leave it well alone. It looks sore, but not infected. If it starts getting hot/red, ring the GP.

DinkyDaisy · 26/07/2021 07:56

Hopefully, pharmacist advice will help.
No picking at it and rest!

dementedpixie · 26/07/2021 07:56

I wouldn't bathe it in anything and get a hydrocolloid dressing on it

Letthelightoflove · 26/07/2021 07:57

It doesn’t look too bad. Saline solution and dressing then keep and eye on it for infection.

Makinganewthinghappen · 26/07/2021 07:58

She is supposed to be doing another walk today for the final leg (they come home each evening rather than camp because of Covid)

But dh and I have said she can’t go and walk another 12 miles. Which makes us bad guys apparently!

Hydrocolloid dressings are great but make sure you get a good one from a pharmacist.
Can leave alone then and will help protect and with pain.

purplesequins · 26/07/2021 07:59

yes, get large blister plaster type dressing in the pharmacy. you might need to ask at the counter for those.

DinkyDaisy · 26/07/2021 07:59

Advice needed if walking again and different shoes?
Would need major protection on wound though and not sure possible...

Palavah · 26/07/2021 07:59

Pharmacist!

purplesequins · 26/07/2021 08:02

is there a dr at the doe who assesess injuries? if yes I would ask them if she can continue.

Palavah · 26/07/2021 08:02

Bathe with diluted dettol/tcp and dress eith compeed would be ideal but i think compeed may be too small. Either way she'd probably need something over the top to cushion. Hydrocolloid usually larger.
With a proper dressing she can finish the expedition but needs to take care of it afterwards.

Definitely no picking!!

Yrevocsid · 26/07/2021 08:03

You can't let her miss the final walk if she's done everything else.

Dress it and wear different shoes so it doesn't rub in the same way and let her go.

DinkyDaisy · 26/07/2021 08:04

Worst scenario, if can't continue, can she defer part to next year?
I know that has happened at my ds school but at 16 may depend if at same school next year and on flexibility of the school.

Makinganewthinghappen · 26/07/2021 08:04

No it’s just run by leaders - she can’t really walk on it she’s dragging herself around to go to the toilet even. She normally isn’t bothered by pain - she is autistic and she tends to just power through and show no worry!

So if she is limping it must be pretty sore. I have already text them and said she not going I think it would be totally insane to walk 1 mile let alone 12Grin

Makinganewthinghappen · 26/07/2021 08:05

To clarify this isn’t even the real walk it’s a practice Grin so it’s really not needed that she does it

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 26/07/2021 08:06

Tell her to sit on her bum then and rest her foot!

Makinganewthinghappen · 26/07/2021 08:06

Dinky she’s doing it with explorer scouts so she should be fine to do it next year but this is just a practice anyway.

OP posts:
purplesequins · 26/07/2021 08:06

ok for the practice walk I would call it quits.
for the real deal make sure she has well fitting shoes&socks (plenty of spares) and stock up on large size gel blister dressings.

DinkyDaisy · 26/07/2021 08:06

Hoping you are at an early opening pharmacist soon...
Soft trainers with gel-type support insole plus good hydrocolloid dressing?

DinkyDaisy · 26/07/2021 08:07

oh, for a practise tell her to stop and get reassurance from the scouts!

Makinganewthinghappen · 26/07/2021 08:08

Do you think it will be ok to show the pharmacist a picture rather than taking her - I don’t drive and I’d have to taxi her to the pharmacy!

purplesequins · 26/07/2021 08:09

weeping clear fluid is nit infected.
