Coverless Duvets

Lazy me likes the idea but I'm only able to buy online so can't see in the flesh.

I like white bedding but wonder if it would just look like a normal duvet without a cover?

Also, would a 8kg drum washing machine be big enough for a king size one?

How long would it take to dry? What would you use while it was wet, or do you have to have a tumble dryer?

MiaowMiaow99 · 24/07/2021 11:24

I thought Id buy 2. One on, one washing drying.

Do you have enough room to store the one that isn't on your bed? Wouldn't it be bulky like a norma duvet?

Are they what used to be called an eiderdown?

What is the advantage of them over a duvet you put a cover on?

IsobelEd · 24/07/2021 11:29

I'd rather wash a duvet cover once every week or two than a whole duvet!

ineedaholidaynow · 24/07/2021 11:32

Can't imagine it is very eco friendly to wash and dry a duvet every week or two

thedevilinablackdress · 24/07/2021 11:38

Not entirely sure what the point of them is. Saw M&S were selling them a while beck, advertised as for occasional /guest use.

Starjammer · 24/07/2021 11:40

Love ours. We have a Night Owl one for spare bed and liked it so much we bought one for our bed too. Fits easily in washing machine and dries quickly.

Newbornandupwards · 24/07/2021 11:42

Bonkers what's wrong with just the washing a duvet cover?

How long do they dry? Many can’t go in a tumble dryer and depending on the weather and the tog can taken a week to dry outdoors.

I have been tempted by these too, I have heard good things about them and much easier than putting a duvet in a cover for me due to my disability. Update & let us know what you think OP.

Putting the damn thing back on I'm guessing!
purplemunkey · 24/07/2021 11:44

Yes, we have a Night Owl one too. Love it. Got one for my daughter too as I liked it so much. They roll down into a storage bag. Easy wash and quick dry.

Starjammer · 24/07/2021 11:44

Ours dries overnight in the house if we don't use tumble drier. It would dry in a few hours outside. They are very quick-drying.

jewel1968 · 24/07/2021 11:44

I guess one advantage would be dealing with dust mites that will be living in your duvet. Dust mites are linked to lots of allergies

purplemunkey · 24/07/2021 11:45

Yes, putting the cover back on and the fact that the duvet itself never gets washed.

Abraxan · 24/07/2021 11:48

We have a number of coverless duvets.

We have 3 from Nightowl - double and king size. They are lightest tog as our house is really warm and we don't like being too hot to sleep. They wash really well and dry quickly on an airer. We haven't bothered trying them in the tumble dryer as we can wash and dry them within a day without.

We got Dd one for university too and it's been great. So quick and easy to wash.

We've had these for about 28 months and they still look as new, despite regular washing.

I have to admit we rarely cleaned out duvets, only the duvet cover, so for us they are fab. I'd have not really though of putting my duvet in the washer.

I have just bought two from M&S, slightly thicker tog, as I had a voucher for there. They look good but as I only got them this week they haven't yet been slept in and not yet been washed. They feel similar though so assume they will wash and dry the same, albeit take a bit longer to dry as thicker.

Abraxan · 24/07/2021 11:50

Ours can go in tumble dryer but haven't tried.
We don't have a line outside to dry.

So ours gets thrown over an airer. Takes less than a day to wash and dry. We wash it in a morning and it is totally dry to throw back in the bed well before bedtime - both in winter and summer.

ineedaholidaynow · 24/07/2021 11:50

My DM struggles with changing a duvet cover, so now puts a single sheet under the duvet, so washes the sheet regularly and the duvet cover occasionally. Assume that is much less faff than having to dry a duvet, especially as she lives in a small flat and uses a communal laundry.

Interesting as some of these duvets seem to be marketed as occasional use/guest room. Does this mean they have a short life if washed regularly?

Oblomov21 · 24/07/2021 11:52

Interesting. I haven't seen these before. Odd concept.

MrsKJones · 24/07/2021 11:54

We bought one for DS. Absolutely brilliant, squashes right down and dries very quickly after washing. It is very soft and as he is autistic he doesn't like the feel of duvet covers

InteriorDesignHell · 24/07/2021 12:02

Good to hear about these, I have an elderly relative who is a bit less strong and mobile now and this sort of thing could be very useful!

spinningspaniels · 24/07/2021 12:05

We've got one in our spare room and it's brilliant. I bought one in grey, and can put either blue or pink with it depending on which grandchild is staying.

It's only a single but dries in 30 mins in the dryer in winter, and easily dries on the washing line. Such a genius idea, I hate using duvet covers.

Abraxan · 24/07/2021 12:10

We have had these ones for about 18 months (DD's university one for about a year.) These are all used daily/regularly.

And just got these ones for the two spare beds:

We called those 'continental quilts' when I was kid. Used them with a sheet underneath so they didn't get washed as often as a duvet cover. We had top loading washing machines though, which take bigger loads.

Not sure I'd want one now as you'd surely need a massive washing machine for a King size? I take my duvet (inner) to the laundromat 2-3 times a year, as I couldn't put that in my front loader machine.
