Is it just me or are boys clothes so boring!

I am sick to death of bloody dinosaurs on everything! I have 2 DS and often find the colours to be a bit drab, lots more black/brown/grey than you get in the girls section or the complete opposite it has to have awful neon colours.
I prefer pastel colours and a more traditional style, even in Sainsburus the girls section has beautiful floral traditional looking dresses and the boys seems to be wall to wall dinosaur!
They're only 3 and 1 so I don't have long before I'm sure they have an opinion on what they want to wear and knowing my luck it'll be dinosaurs Grin

My 7yo’s favourite colour is blue.

It is annoying. He needed new shorts recently- M&S do bright colours for younger boys but it seems to stop at age 6.

I keep a lookout for sales on Scandi clothes now. H&M do the odd brighter thing too.

Terriblecreature · 23/07/2021 09:24

I have two boys myself 2 and 4 months. I am not into traditional baby blue to be honest and every single bit of clothing they own is from Zara as it's the only place I actually like the clothes from. I have definately went down the route of wanting them to look cool, a look I certainly didn't think I would of but it is definately harder with boys. There is also much choice in the girls section.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/07/2021 09:28

Once they're out of toddler ranges, I find that outdoors shops are best for colourful clothes with a range of prints. It makes a good change from Minecraft/ Lego and the general palette of shades that would be named lurk, grime, sludge and dinosaur fart if they were paint colours.

My ds is now 10 & it gets harder to get anything that’s isn’t black, grey, navy or khaki once they are over 6. I’ve had some me luck with H&M and it be picked up the occasional t-shirt from mountain warehouse.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/07/2021 09:29

Try John Lewis.

Nuggetnugget · 23/07/2021 09:31

H&M are good I find. But I do agree. I was sick of the same things diggers and dinosaurs and similar colours.

sausagerole · 23/07/2021 09:32

YES!

Little girls clothes are sooo lovely. Boys clothes are just totally unimaginative.

jevoudrais · 23/07/2021 09:33

See I disagree. I have a daughter and it's so hard to find things that aren't pink or don't have disney characters on! I always see lots of lovely boys thing. She got called a beautiful boy last week and she wasn't even wearing something boyish, just not pink.

HelloDulling · 23/07/2021 09:36

We never went down the dinosaur/digger motif route, but agree, plain navy/grey/khaki polo shirts do get a bit dull. DS is now 12 and still wears the same!

timtam23 · 23/07/2021 09:38

Lands End (online mostly) have a good range of colours for boys and it's not all dinosaurs/skateboards. Expensive at full price but they have permanent discount codes at the moment and also good prices in their sales.
Haven't looked in detail at their girls' clothes but it didn't seem to be all pink & frills

ContessaVerde · 23/07/2021 09:38

Have you also noticed that the sale rack for boys is much smaller?
Was in tesco the other day, the girls sale rack was huge, but the boys had hardly anything, and yes, all murky colours.

Little Bird ‘unisex’ range is nice, but tbh much of it would be easier for girls to wear than boys.

onetwothreeadventure · 23/07/2021 09:38

I have a boy and girl toddler and I find it easier to find stuff for my little boy! Zara is great (lots of non patterned sweatshirts etc) and I love brands like Frugi for something colorful (I buy it on Babipur or Yes Bebe, they have really nice clothes). Then H and M or Matalan for the dinosaurs/diggers/Paw Patrol hauls!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/07/2021 09:44

Whats makes girls clothes shopping easier is that no one judges girls wearing stuff from the boys section. So I can buy the knee length Jersey shorts, or the orange t-shirt with a dinosaur digging up a road... and its all OK.

People do have a negative response to someone dressing their son in a pink flowery dress.

WhatsWithAllTheCarrots · 23/07/2021 09:45

Next does good colourful boys' clothes. Zara does some fun stuff too. But I agree, gendered clothing is awful!

mancarose · 23/07/2021 09:46

Have you had a look at pat pat online ? They have some lovely boy stuff all ages

CaptSkippy · 23/07/2021 09:47

So, why not buy from the girl's section? Many shirts and shorts you find there don't look like they are specifically for girls, unless it has a pink princess theme to it.
Might be a solution, no?

wigglycactus · 23/07/2021 09:51

Try Scandi brands for unisex, bright, comfortable clothes - they are a bit pricier but generally last really well and hold their value so can be passed down from child to child and sometimes sold when you're done with them too.
Some favourites were - maxomorra, Smafolk, Duns, villervalla. We also like M&S and boden (and little bird when it existed, you can still find lots of their items on ebay though) sometimes.

Bin85 · 23/07/2021 09:53

Try Boden you can resell
JoJo Maman Bebe similarly

Little Bird (Jools Oliver) is now sold through Next website.

Luckymummytoone · 23/07/2021 09:59

I always bought my little boy handmade leggings and rompers off Etsy/Instagram x

Splendo · 23/07/2021 10:00

I agree, and you can't buy bright clothes for boys from the girls section because apparently girls clothes MUST be adorned with obligatory frills, bows or heart shaped buttons. All I want is plain bright clothes in rainbow colours, for both kids. But without paying scandi brand prices. Shouldn't be this difficult to find.

InkieNecro · 23/07/2021 10:03

I quite like the dinosaurs and sharks, but the colours are just murky. My eldest loves neon everything and it's really hard to find things he likes. Currently he's living in the same 5 shorts and 5 tops that I found in tesco and ignoring the rest of his wardrobe.

Mothercare used to do some really nice bright gender neutral type clothes which I loved.

In the past I have resorted to glittery fabric paint to go around outlines of images on their tops, or buying pale clothes and dyeing them in the machine.

Ooh, yes my friend makes leggings on there and they're amazing! She makes them for cloth nappies as well as it's hard to find leggings to fit those.
doodlejump1980 · 23/07/2021 10:08

H&M usually have a much better selection of colours. I totally agree though. It’s rubbish!
Have you also noticed that the boys clothes with animals are always predatory animals (sharks/lions/dinosaurs etc) and the girls are always prey? Have a look the next time you’re in a clothes shop. Or unicorns 🤦🏻‍♀️
