I'd like to see a faithful rendering of The Little Princess and series based on the life of Maya Angelou and the life and times of Eleanor of Aquitaine.

@littledrummergirl

The Chronicles of Narnia, all seven books. I would love to see these being made faithfully to the books.
Netflix are doing this! They're turning all the books into films and will apparently do multiple spin off tv series too!

Not sure when it's supposed to come out but it was announced quite a while ago.

@PermanentTemporary

Love the sound of all of those!

I would have liked a series of Hunted which wasn't so obviously fake. The first series the faking wasn't so obvious and I loved it but I guess it wasn't dramatic enough. It all made me think it's pretty easy to disappear in this country.

And I would love a documentary made by somebody really good about an adult literacy class.

Here you go, @PermanentTemporary, the adult literacy doc has been made

A Georgette Heyer book! Can’t believe it hasn’t been done already

I'd like to see a series of documentaries about groups that are often subjected to discrimination that is not sensationalist and focuses on the struggles that thousands of people quietly cope with every day. I don't mean a reality series following one or 2 individuals, more a reasoned discussion with experts and a few real life stories (played by actors if necessary to respect the privacy of the real people). Episodes might be:

  • Life on benefits- showing exactly how much claimants are given, what they need to do to qualify, the expenses they have to cover, why people are on benefits. I frequently hear well of people I work with complaining that 'benefits scroungers' get ££££ for doing nothing and that all pregnant young women are given a nice flat and never have to work. I'd like something to make them think again.
  • Real life of a romany gypsy (apologies to anyone if I have got the terminology wrong)- not a romanticised version or a 'Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' type programme.
  • Real life of refugees- in a similar vein.

Becca Andre’s Alchemist /Final Formula series.

ChessieFL · 22/07/2021 15:09

The Cazalet Chronicles. All five books. There was one about 20 years ago which was good but only covered the first two books.

BrozTito · 22/07/2021 15:23

KillingDeftlyMe yes i was massively impressed with PT as Lenin, he could probably still do it, he was a highlight of the series along with the useless tsar. As for Michael Kitchen as Trotsky though, all I can say is WTF. They could redo it as a real epic series like The Crown. Please lord no more Lily James in every historical or literary series though.

@CeaselessWatcher

A proper Box of Delight-style faithful adaptation of The Dark is Rising series. On the BBC. I don’t have Netflix or any of that stuff. To start with The Dark is Rising, aired over the Christmas period. In the summer we will have Over Sea Under Stone. I know that one comes first, but the Dark is Rising works better as the first series I think. Then all the others.

It can be brought into the modern age, I don’t mind that. But keep everything else. And for the love of God don’t make Will American or cast Lovejoy as Merriman.

Yes!

Yes good series but agree about the other books

@BustopherPonsonbyJones

Ooh, great ideas! Yes to Shardlake, Rivers of London and The Dark is Rising (done properly).

I’d add anything by Diana Wynne Jones (I loved Archer’s Goon but would to see a Chrestomanci story) and anything by Robin Hobbs. I liked the Maureen Lipman version of A Little Princess so I’ll stick with that one.

Farseer, Liveships etc would be amazing. I’m not sure they could do them justice though
Clawdy · 22/07/2021 16:04

The Elizabeth Goudge novels about Damerosehay - perhaps without the religious bits! Would be a lovely period family saga.

CatrinVennastin · 22/07/2021 16:11

I would love to see the Essex Witch Museum books made into a tv series.

Any of the Becky Chambers Wayfarers books would make an amazing film or tv series. The books are fabulous so someone would have to do them justice.

I would love to see an unknown actor cast as Peter Grant for the Rivers of London series. There’s a young lad who works in my local Sainsbury’s who would be perfect in the role.

BrozTito · 22/07/2021 16:18

The North Water that the bbc are putting out later this year looks brilliant, hope to see more like that and more literary type stuff, less cop show 'thriller' snoozefests and less relentless misery. The best series (poirot, sopranos, I cladius) always had a good comedy edge despite the subject matter.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 22/07/2021 16:35

Conn Iguulden’s Conqueror series - Genghis through to Kublai Khan

Sameshirt · 22/07/2021 17:13

Wheel of time is coming to Prime. I love the books by Susanna Gregory both the Matthew Bartholomew and the Chaloner series.

PaperMonster · 22/07/2021 17:37

@thenightsky thank you for that. Usually no-one has ever heard of it. It was so funny!

Clawdy · 22/07/2021 18:21

The Mysterious Mr Quin, by Agatha Christie. Short stories, with a twist, and an occasional supernatural element, featuring Mr Quin, and the old-fashioned little Mr Satterthwaite (perfect role for Toby Jones! ) Can never understand why it's never been done, given AC's huge popularity.

midsomermurderess · 22/07/2021 18:57

The Honourable Schoolboy. I'm surprised that with quite a number of Le Carre books having been serialised or filmed, this hasn't. I think there might be a very poor adaptation out there.

LadyEloise · 02/08/2021 09:49

I'd love a series on Queen Victoria's 9 children ( and possibly her grandchildren too ) done like Downton Abbey.
They could do a child per episode.

The children were married into other Royal houses of Europe. That's why the present Queen is related to so many other European Royals.
It would be so interesting.
