Can you cut curls out?

Might be a silly question but my DS has lovely curly locks. People have said to me don't get it cut as you'll cut his curls out. I can't keep it the length it is as it is irritating him and isn't fair on him.

Me and his dad both have curly hair so surely it's just genetics?

I'm going to get it cut tonight but feel I need to brave myself incase his beautiful curls go!

It sounds silly, I know Grin.

Cut curls out? Confused

Only if you've given him a perm Grin.

Other people are idiots. Hadn't you noticed?

Terracedtardis · 21/07/2021 13:40

My sons first haircut did cut his curls out. But that was because they were just baby curls and his actual hair is straight. If your son has properly curly hair then obviously the curls will just grow straight back.

He's never had a hair cut. When it's wet it's straight but they soon 'bounce' right back in.

Ugh, people are idiots! I agree. Honestly didn't think it was a thing until people said it to me!

I'm assuming his hair is actually curly and it's not his baby hair! Sad.

I might have to give him a perm if his curls don't come back Grin.

It happened with all of my four. Baby ringlets give way to thicker straighter hair. Once the hair was cut the ringlets never returned.

Notaroadrunner · 21/07/2021 13:46

No, don't think you can cut them out. Ds had fabulous curly hair as a small child and we got it cut when he was about 7. He wanted to be able to have it really short and gel it like his mates. As an adult he has let it grow and has a mad head of curls now.

PrettyBlunt · 21/07/2021 13:50

Now I feel even more stupid but how can you tell the difference to baby hair and normal hair?

He's my first, can you tell Grin.

DTS had long golden blonde ringlet curls, like something out of a historical film. Cut it at home during first lockdown and they never came back. Was indeed their baby hair but it was so long and so much of it I really thought their hair was curly curly 😭

When he gets older his hair will change texture. It will becomes coarser and less fluffy, it might stay curly or it might not.

All 3 of mine lost their curls with their first haircut....lit happens loads. Why are other people idiots?🙄

Two of my boys had ringlets as preschoolers. Had the reception chop and then even lockdown long hair didn't bring back the curls - their hair is just thicker now and heavier and can't quite manage it. The most DS2 gets is a little wave and his hair is shoulder length at the moment.

PrettyBlunt · 21/07/2021 14:00

Oh thank you all.

I really hope the curls stay but although I'd love to not cut his hair at the moment it just isn't fair on him.

🤞🏼 for the curls!

Yes, my dd has ringlets but once I cut her hair, they will be gone. Same happened to me when I was a toddler.
But if you have curly hair surely there is a fair chance they'll stay? No guarantees I suppose but obviously you have to cut their hair at some point...
I remember cutting my ds's hair with great sadness as it was golden and I knew it would only be brown after that. I still have those golden locks tucked away somewhere 😉.

Theunamedcat · 21/07/2021 14:04

Ds1 was born dark haired we cut it because he had eczema it grew in white blond now its mousy brown Confused hair is strange

Ds2 lost his curls he has a weird flick to the ends but thats all

Lachimolala · 21/07/2021 14:06

Unfortunately yes, my youngest had gorgeous ringlets that were just so cute. He had a cut last year and they never came back! He has pin straight hair now.

Corneliusmurphy · 21/07/2021 14:11

Yep ds’s hair has never regained his curls (I’ve tried letting it get a bit longer but it just sticks up a la bog brush 😂) I have naturally curly hair dp doesn’t

Onewomanbadtan · 21/07/2021 14:14

I personally came out of the womb like u was GHD'd in there, as did my elder sibling and have remained that way but my mum has curly hair and we wondered where did that go. In their teens two of my bros grew their hair long and we found the curls 😊😊 Absolutely magnificent. Not afro or tight curls, just loose fabulous curls.
So while the curls aren't obvious when they've shorter standard cuts, the "disappeared curls" come out with a bit of hair length. I suppose it depends on how tight a curl is on when you see it??

Yeah this

His curls are still there Grin. I'm glad he has naturally curly hair!

Well, it is a bit idiotic to say to someone to not get their child’s hair cut just because it might stop being curly…what are they meant to do, grow it forever?

GardenDweller · 21/07/2021 21:40

My son’s lovely ringlets didn’t return after a short haircut, even when he grew it longer. I had assumed it would stay curly as all my family and I have curly hair but it’s really straight.

DaxtheDestroyer · 21/07/2021 21:45

My DS had beautiful blonde curls as a toddler (and massively long thick eyelashes too). He didn't lose them with his first hair cut, but they did gradually disappear as his hair got thicker and now he has straight brown hair.
My hair has been curly, wavy, straight(ish), curly again. Hormones seem to affect it massively, it was straight till puberty, then wavy, then curly then wavy again after pregnancy.

loriat · 21/07/2021 21:49

I'm in my 50s and have never managed to cut the curls out. Sometimes baby curls don't come back but they would just grow out anyway if the hair wasn't cut. If his hair is naturally curly they will come back.

Pumpkinstace · 21/07/2021 21:55

My DD had curls, I cut her hair and they grew back but then the just disappeared once she got to around 4 years old.

Her hair is so straight now
