Family of Toads in my drain

Discovered Daddy Toad, Mummy Toad and Baby Toads ( spawn) in my drain in the back garden this evening. What the hell am I going to do with them? Presume I'll need to get rid otherwise we'll be overrun with toads. DC are so excited. They looked so scared when I took the drain cover off, looking up at me with big eyes......

I live on the Yorkshire coast. I see there's a wildlife rescue at Whitby who deal with amphibians so I'll contact them for advice.

Why would you be worried about being over run? Are you scared of toads?! Grin

They'll be great for the garden! Look after them Smile

Toads are lovely - you'll hear them doing that exotic toad call on summer evenings.

I'd be worried about torrential ran flooding them out. But hopfully they'll hop to their new pond that you're making them when the spawn hatches. Until then can you redirect any water temporarily?

Dwayne "The Croak" Jumpson 😆 that tickled me.

We had a frog jump onto our kitchen, gave DD the shock of her life!

Absolutely nothing constructive to add I'm afraid. Never knew they hung out as a family though - just thought they did the deed and went their separate ways, leaving the kids to fend for themselves.

INTO our kitchen...obvs

I love toads! We have a small family in our cellar (nice and cool and damp for them). We’ve never been over-run and we enjoy having them around.

DonLewis · 20/07/2021 21:10

Have they discovered that their croaks make the best noise ever because of the acoustic properties of the pipe? We had the loudest toad in our garden last year and couldn't figure out how it was so loud, until we realised where it was living (rain water down pipe, exactly like yours) and our bedroom is next to it a floor up.

I mean, sometimes we couldn't sleep because of the noise! Not heard it this year Sad

DonLewis did you leave them there, were they ok?
And what do their calls sound like? They're just under my en suite window so I will leave the window open and listen tonight.

If it’s as hot and dry where you are as it is where I am (South England), they’re probably just making the best of the situation! I put a small, shallow paddling pool out for the dogs two days ago so that they can cool off - no interest whatsoever. Today, however, I have frogs!

I also keep fire bellied toads - have had 6 of them since 2013, and they make the most amazing noises at night!

Biancadelrioisback · 20/07/2021 21:43

I'm not sure I know the difference between a toad and a frog...
Anyways, I wish I had an amphibious reptile in my garden!

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/07/2021 21:48

Make a small container pond and try to relocate them safely.

Loving all the name suggestions Grin

Toads crawl, frogs jump. Toads have bumpy backs while frogs are smoother.

I'm becoming a bit of a toad expert tonight.

I am jealous.. I have plenty of frogs though in my mini wildlife water bucket area. I used old baby baths and added some water mint and rocks etc.
You should move the spawn to a tub and make sure it's always got water.

Here's a nice idea for your drains to attract more wildlife :-)

@mrspainful we did nothing, they seemed perfectly happy! The noise was like a vibrating, almost machine gun like, but friendlier.

The corner where the drain is was very sheltered and by the plant pots, so got lots of water and I assume, had lots of slugs for a toady feast!
