Would you rather live by the coast or in the country?

And why?

I can't decide but I'm leaning towards the coast because I've never lived by the coast and I'd hope, depending upon where, there might be more to do. Although if it's touristy then you have the crowds to contend with and out of season it might feel bleak when so many things shut down.

Coast. I feel trapped inland. Plus I’d rather drive inland for a day in the country than battle to get to the coast.

PrancerandDancer · 20/07/2021 22:45

Country.... Give me trees not people.
Nothing better for my soul that a forest or a river.
Give me a mountain and I'm the happiest. My dream home would be tucked away in the Alps somewhere.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 20/07/2021 22:47

As a midlander ,I would sell my soul for a place near the coast. I lived near the coast years ago but didn't appreciate it at the time .

nimbuscloud · 20/07/2021 22:52

We are in the very lucky position of having a house by the coast - inherited from family -and one in the country (our own) as well as our family home in a city. When the kids were younger the seaside house was the absolute favourite, now the rural one is becoming more popular.

Seeingadistance · 20/07/2021 22:53

I have both. Sea on one side, hills on the other.

Popcornbetty · 20/07/2021 22:53

I have the best of both worlds..I'm spoiled.
..

BrilliantBetty · 20/07/2021 22:54

Depends where on the coast.

So many sea side towns are 'rough around the edges'. They are hotspots for drugs and homelessness, amongst other things.

So unless we're talking gorgeous secluded village with sea views on the Jurassic coast... countryside.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 20/07/2021 22:57

@BrilliantBetty I was just about to point this out, as am currently in Margate for work…

It certainly has a few issues.

Alannawhorideslikeaman · 20/07/2021 23:00

Countryside. I frigging hate sand.

beela · 20/07/2021 23:01

Country. I can take or leave the coast.

properg · 20/07/2021 23:03

coast - would get annoyed at having to drive everywhere in the country.

guffaux · 20/07/2021 23:13

my dream home looks out over the sea, with a short path to the beach,...at the side of the garden, there is a stream which tumbles down to the sea, and a pretty, wildlife filled woodland along the other side of the stream, at the rear there are rolling hills, leading up to dramatic crags about 6 miles from the house (perfect walk distance) and at the other side of the house, moorland, stretching for miles, with dales dipping in amongst the rugged moor.

When (!) I win the ultra euro lottery, I'll get Phil and Kirsty to find this house for me...

IfNot · 20/07/2021 23:35

Neither. Unless maybe a coastal city. The seaside is nice in the summer when it’s all warm and jolly, but in winter, damn, it’s bleak in most places. Empty houses, b and bs full of junkies and shit shops. I love trees and nature but most of the countryside seems to be farms with no access, roads with no pavement and having to drive everywhere. Plus, I would hate to live in a tiny village. I have only experienced tiny quaint villages on tv and usually there’s a lot of murders so I would forever be expecting the body count to be racking up..

Thursa · 20/07/2021 23:43

The coast. Being by the sea is good for my mental health. I get depression living inland.

Cowbells · 20/07/2021 23:50

I used to feel the need to live near water but now I feel the same about woodland. We live near massive woods and I walk in them several times a week. The feeling of peace and energy is wonderful.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 21/07/2021 00:20

I live by the beach in Australia, but we are only a short train or car ride to the CBD, and about 15 minutes in the car to the countryside, so the best of all worlds really. I love the beach, I was brought up by the beach in NI, and missed it a lot when I lived in London. I enjoy driving in the country, but I wouldn't want to live there. I spent some of my teenage years in a country town, that really was the worst of all possible worlds to me!

millerpie · 21/07/2021 00:28

I’m lucky to live in the beautiful countryside surrounded by woods and nature but it genuinely hurts my heart that I don’t live in a little fisherman’s cottage by the sea.

Mammyloveswine · 21/07/2021 00:29

I live by the coast abs I love it!!

Immaculatemisconception · 21/07/2021 00:30

The country every time. The coast is nice but tourists spoil it.

fallfallfall · 21/07/2021 00:33

the salty air and soil means it's a challenge to grow your own food.
subsequently i'd choose the country so you can eat some of your own produce.

Dementedswan · 21/07/2021 00:33

I have the coast a 20 min walk away and woodlands, rivers on my doorstep.

sandgrown · 21/07/2021 00:33

I live in a touristy place that gets very busy but it was lovely tonight seeing everyone sitting outside the bars and restaurants and walking on the prom. In the Winter I virtually have it to myself . I used to live in the country and I loved that too though transport was sometimes an issue . Home is what you make it .

Deadringer · 21/07/2021 00:35

I have always lived near the coast and i find that i feel unsettled somehow when i am a long way from the sea.

HarrietOh · 21/07/2021 00:38

I’m 5 min walk from a gorgeous stretch of beaches and coast line, in the north so not touristy at all just gets busier on nice sunny days. I love it. I do like the countryside too but coast wins for me.

CrackOnOrGoHome · 21/07/2021 00:50

I used to live by the coast but rarely visited the local beach - how I regret that now I live in the outskirts of a city! I used to go on lots of day trips to the moors, the countryside and other seaside resorts. It was the best time of my life. There was a real vibe in the summer, lots of parties and the pubs/clubs were packed, although traffic was awful. Winter was soul destroying. The weather was brutal and there was no work as it was all seasonal. Hence me moving back to the city, to find work. But I miss it now, albeit with rose tinted glasses on.
