Can I put domestos in the washing machine?

My machine stinks. I’ve been trying to trace the smell and discovered it coming from the drum (clothes smell ok, so I thought it was something else)

I’ve tried a cleaner (twice), plus hot washes. I think the problem is that the machine is used almost constantly, but only ever on low temperature washes, apart from towels.

Google says that I can use bleach and I asked dh to buy some when he went shopping. He’s come back with domestos…

Yes you can but not to much or it makes to many suds.

GreatBigBird · 20/07/2021 15:38

How much is too much?

5 Second squeeze in drum rather than had the bottle!

Akire · 20/07/2021 15:39

*half

Use soda crystals and wash on the hottest wash a few times to kill the bacteria.

Always wash on 60 at least once a week to kill bacteria

Divineswirls · 20/07/2021 15:41

Do that after using the bleach if you're going down that route

Divineswirls · 20/07/2021 15:42

I'd put about 100ml of bleach in

I couldn’t get soda crystals - or clear vinegar. I’ve been trying hot washes and the cleaner, but I think there’s mould somewhere (it looks clean to the eye around the seals etc.

I am going to start using the cleaner once a month as well.

Just keep doing the hot washes, it usually gets worse before it shifts everything along. Also pull out the drawer and clean the cavity. You can use a dishwasher tablet instead of a specific cleaner.

Akire · 20/07/2021 15:44

Make sure you leave the door open for 15min or so after each wash so it had chance to dry. Other wise it can smell musty even when there is no obvious mould build up.

Positive that it might get worse before it gets better. I really need it to get clean internally.

Have you cleaned around the seals? That often gets mucky and needs a good clean.

Domestos is bleach - if that is your question....

@GreatBigBird
Hi OP
I have done this several times, works a treat, cleaners don’t work for me either, i use a hot wash 60 degrees, then about half way through I switch it off and let it soak for about an hour then restart and let it rinse and finish THEN - I do a whites wash of towels tea towels, hair wraps face cloths etc. This ensures all traces of the bleach will be gone before you do another wash
As a PP said don’t use a lot it does make a lot of suds i tend to use about 40ml.
I also give the drawer a good spray and brush with a spray bleach cleaner before hand, not just the drawer but the drawer compartment too.

Everything is always left open.

We were without water for nearly 3 weeks a couple of months back (main drain collapsed). We had smells after that - everything had dried. That’s sorted, but I think that started the problems. I thought initially that it was still the drains, but it smells different.

Then about a month back, I load of washing got forgotten about for 24 hours, but the smell went after a rewash (I thought)

It’s built up since then, but only in the last week have I traced it to the drum (the seals and drum look clean).

Oh yes as kpo58 said clean all the seals too, get really inside the bit that meets the metal, best to do this before starting the wash as well.
But watch your fingers it’s quite a tight fit

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 20/07/2021 15:50

I do loads of 60 washes and almost always use powder and almost never use fabric conditioner. Also never close the door of the machine unless it is in use, and do not leave washing in there overnight, try and get it out asap after the cycle has finished.

I have NEVER had a smelly washing machine.

imo 20/30/40 washes are just not hot enough to kill germs so your laundry is just swishing around in barely tepid filth. Add in the plastic goo from capsules, and the christ knows what scented slime that is fabric conditioner and you have a minging stinking machine.

Akire · 20/07/2021 15:51

Have you emptied the filter? Usually at front under kick plate.

I thought domestos contains bleach but has additional chemicals (which may or may not upset a washing machine).

Oooh haven’t done between the metal drum and seal - just the seal and the folds of the seal.

Yes - it was clogged, so I had hope that it was the solution.

Do you wash normal clothes at 60˚? I wasn’t sure whether this would damage them.

I have used bleach in the past but now do a hot wash with white vinegar - which doesn't leave subsequent washes smelling like fish n chips even though it sounds like it should Grin

inappropriateraspberry · 20/07/2021 15:57

Domestics is just a brand name for bleach.
