Afternoon snoozes, little lie downs, and going for a rest..

When I was working it was a retirement dream. That slump after lunch that made me want a snooze to get me through the afternoon made me add it to my list of retirement treats.

But now I am actually retired I haven't done it once! Not during the boredom of lockdown, not now it's baking and sleep at night is hard.

So I'm wondering... do many actually build this in to their day, or is a myth...?

I love an afternoon snooze. It switches my brain off more than anything else. I wake at night, so suits me to have a nap on my days off if I can.

Thesearmsofmine · 20/07/2021 14:57

I can’t nap in the day(unless ill). I’m jealous of those who can though!

Fabpinky · 20/07/2021 14:57

I’m 29 and I nap nearly every day. In fact I just woke up!

AuntMargo · 20/07/2021 15:02

I am 54, work 12hr shifts 4 days a week and on my days off always love an afternoon nap

FogHornInTheAttic · 20/07/2021 15:05

I had an epic hour nap last weekend.I woke up feeling like I'd been on charge.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 20/07/2021 15:11

man alive I LOVE a nap....I am barely awake just now, but that's cos I changed my anti histamines and they lied about them being non drowsy on the box!

I was just in the garden sunning myself and nearly nodded off, but have come in to get on with things.

My best naps are late morning ones...get up early when dh goes to work, get on with some housework and maybe walk the dog, have a shower and malinger upstairs getting dressed...lie down on the bed and snoooooze! I especially like doing this in the winter.

Otherwise, a nice afternoon nap on the sofa, feet up, fire on.
I do nap a bit less in the summer I think, but maybe not. Just now the antihistamines are really making me muzzy headed and weary. Loratidine doesn't but it also seems to have lost its effectiveness for me.

Dh cannot nap...he barely has 6 hours sleep a day in him so if he has a nap it puts him off kilter for days. Mind you that because he will not entertain anything decaff so serve him right.

BoysTownGang · 20/07/2021 15:13

I have a nap almost every afternoon - but I do get up for work before 5am! If I don’t have one, for whatever reason, you can tell the time by my yawning and doziness😁
Sometimes it’s just for half an hour, sometimes a couple of hours, but I’m quite protective of my snooze, so friends know not to phone me!
I find it re-charges my batteries.

I have nodded off in the hairdressers on several occasions during the highlights processing time.
Naps are essential, and my Ddog agrees!

I “trained” myself to be able to sleep during the day when DC when little. I’m now 60, semi retired and very rarely sleep by day on purpose, only if I’ve had two terrible nights in a row, say. However, occasionally I nod off after lunch if I’m relaxing, just for 5 mins. My DH is 66 and always has two naps each day, after lunch and tea. He’s recently retired from a job where he had to get up at 5am each morning and I don’t think he’s quite caught up with himself.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/07/2021 15:13

I’m all for Nana nap, but 30 mins max. I love it. It feels so indulgent.

NotMyCat · 20/07/2021 15:14

I always nap if I can! I take 4 antihistamines a day and have a load of chronic illnesses so always tired Grin

joystir59 · 20/07/2021 15:15

63, almost retired but still do a bit of teaching here and there, and have a nap lots of afternoons but not always. Often sleep badly at night since being widowed a year ago.

BoysTownGang · 20/07/2021 15:16

@ChicChaos

Yes, your Nan was right!!! The getting up so early is very much worth it if you have a nap!!
Winter ones are the best… when it’s cold and wet, the thought of coming home, having a nice warm lunch followed by a nap makes my day!😁

readingismycardio · 20/07/2021 15:18

Ohhhh my kind of thread! always wondered if other people do it so often. I do, at least 5 times a week. DH didn't like it before we met, now he's a pro. I get up early every morning, so an afternoon nap is bliss!

Purplewithred · 20/07/2021 15:18

For my birthday one year my DP built me a hammock nook in the garden for my afternoon naps.

Reader, I married him.

Blossomtoes · 20/07/2021 15:18

My mum used to be able to go to sleep on a clothesline. I reckon she had a nap every day.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/07/2021 15:21

I do - a lovely little zizz on the sofa most days.

But I hardly ever sleep well at night now - it’s a typical age thing. 🙁
Up and down, reading, making cups of (decaf) tea, listening to the World Service, not to mention probably a couple of wees thrown in….

Hardly ever more than about 45 minutes, though - I usually set the alarm.

hellcatspangle · 20/07/2021 15:21

My DH hasn't even retired and he still has an afternoon nap every day (he wfh and isn't very busy)

81Byerley · 20/07/2021 15:21

Yes...every afternoon I lie on the sofa and sleep for about an hour!

AlwaysLatte · 20/07/2021 15:23

I'm retired and do on very rare occasions have a sneaky snooze before I collect my son from school! (Usually far too busy though).

Reallyreallyborednow · 20/07/2021 15:24

I think it depends. I cannot nap. It disrupts my sleep patterns and puts me out of sorts. I used to work shifts and couldn’t even nap before shifts. I need a solid chunk or nothing.

Dh on the other hand only needs to sit on the sofa in the afternoon and he’s away. His mum and dad do it too, if we go for lunch we all sit down after and within 10 mins I’m the only one awake while everyone else snores!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 20/07/2021 15:28

I love my nap., I have an hour every afternoon to rest my joints as I'm disabled. It helps me get through the day. I'm 56 now

Mintjulia · 20/07/2021 15:34

I'm not retired but on holiday at home this week.

I've adapted to the heat, now living a Baijan lifestyle. Smile

Up at 6, go for a run, back at 7, bit of housework while it's still coolish, then breakfast with ds, coffee, read the morning news, bumble around for a bit then take ds swimming. Back for lunch at 2 and then....SIESTA. I love it.

I snooze until 4pm, then go out with ds, meet friends, cycling. Then bed, with all the windows open, by midnight. What a nice way to live.

Shame I'll be back at work next week.

2bazookas · 20/07/2021 15:42

You're not old yet. Give yourself another decade or two,. Part of the natural ageing process causes changes in night-time sleep patterns in older people . When that happens to you,, you'll appreciate the value in a little compensatory daytime siesta. snooze/nap/. It's one of the little guiltfree pleasures of old age.

N0RKS · 20/07/2021 15:46

I walk the dogs at 5.30am, so by about now I am ready for a feets up.
Blisss

poorbuthappy · 20/07/2021 15:46

My DH has a siesta every day. He can shut his eyes and be snoring within 90 secs. Anytime of day. His mother is the same.
