Dogs off leads everywhere!

Did dogs used to just be on leads more or am I just getting old and intolerant,? Literally everywhere we go for a walk, outdoor swim , park, cafe the place is swarming with dogs off leads. Great if the owner is 'switched on' and aware but really bloody horrible to be licked/sniffed/trampled on/food wrecked if you really don't like them and owner just oblivious. It seems standard now to not have them on a lead.Anyone know why?
If one more person says 'oh they're friendly' I honestly think I will trample on their picnic/ lick their face/sniff their genital s and say 'on well so am I' .Rant over.really pisses me off though.

that is probably it @Sparklingbrook

although i do remember on one occasion now i wrack my brain, and i had to turn the other way to stop the dog, but it is a one off

AbsolutelyPatsy · 21/07/2021 08:43

oh and i am pretty sure the owner tried to stop the dog

i guess these are lock down dogs, and new owners?

Is it badly behaved dogs off the lead you have a problem with or just dogs being off lead in general? If it's the former, YANBU, if it's the latter YABU!

I remember another thread a few months ago about this, which I also contributed to. I said I thought all dogs should be on leads when out walking, mainly because of a couple of incidents involving my children (who would never approach a strange dog, on or off a lead). But after reading some posters' comments about how their dogs are well trained and not even remotely interested in passers by, I looked a bit harder when out and about and realised this could often be the case. There were plenty of people whose dogs were trotting happily beside them and I hadn't even noticed that there was no lead. So it was a bit of a lesson in not seeing things in black and white.

It really is the untrained/poorly trained dogs I have an issue with ... or rather their owners!

i just walked passed what i consider bad dog management, 2 little bichon types barking their heads off, leaping around, from the opposite side of the road at my dog,
no reaction from their owner at all
no shame

Really refreshing to see your post. As a dog owner whose dog goes off lead I can't tell you how untrained and uncontrolled dogs piss me off

Off lead dogs who trot beside their owners, don’t react to other dogs or people, sit or stay when they’re told to, sit quietly in a cafe are an absolute joy to watch. We’re hoping to get a dog when we retire - Brodie the cairn terrier, we’re working our way towards him Smile - and that’s the kind of behaviour we’ll work really hard to achieve.

The endless barking, jumping up, destructive, leg and other dog humping, no recall horrors you see while their owners turn an indulgent blind eye to them are an effing nightmare.

Yes. A lot of dogs really aren't interested in other people and that's good with me.

When someone has four dogs off-lead and lets them chase runners (whether adults or children), that really annoys me. I would report such people to the dog warden but our council has done away with dog wardens.

This is such a nice post to read.

I get bit stressed by dogs with poor recall bothering my dog but I’m going to try to notice the well behaved dogs more so I don’t feel like the small minority are actually the majority

Good point.

If your off lead dog approaches a human , its considered out of control. Cant believe you have it off lead 100% of the time. No thought for anyone who might be petrified or disabled. Awful attitude. Its people like you who shouldn't have dogs.
