Dogs off leads everywhere!

Did dogs used to just be on leads more or am I just getting old and intolerant,? Literally everywhere we go for a walk, outdoor swim , park,cafe the place is swarming with dogs off leads. Great if the owner is 'switched on' and aware but really bloody horrible to be licked/sniffed/trampled on/food wrecked if you really don't like them and owner just oblivious. It seems standard now to not have them on a lead.Anyone know why?
If one more person says 'oh they're friendly' I honestly think I will trample on their picnic/ lick their face/sniff their genital s and say 'on well so am I' .Rant over.really pisses me off though.

@CharleyChook

And those in the process of training ???

Wheretobuy · 20/07/2021 21:17

We need better laws and better awareness of the existing.
A lot of public does not know that if a so-called ‘friendly’ dog reaches your child and you feel in danger, you are fully within your right to take action.
Same goes for spoiling your picnic food, chewing your belongings, etc.

@vodkaredbullgirl people that don't live in England where the weather is your version of "hot" 8 months of the year...

I haven't noticed more dogs off the lead TBH. If I encounter one I do try and get out of it's way.

I did go shopping to an outlet village today where it seems dogs are allowed which i was a bit Confused about. Not sure what a dog would gain from a day out shopping, and especially in this heat.
Tripping over dogs everywhere in a shop-not ideal.

@CharleyChook

Oh here’s our weekly ‘friendly dogs are scum’ post 🙄

Move on OP. Give me a happy, friendly dog before a growling, snarling, spoilt, on lead dog any day. And no I don’t care if anyone claims their dog is a hazard to people and other dogs because it is “a rescue dog”.

I have taken on many dogs from shelters. I foster and assess relinquished dogs before they go to their ‘forever’ homes. They can all be trained to be sociable, regardless of where they came from. The problem we have is that people can’t be bothered to put in the time to train them so use “She is a rescue” as an excuse for the owners failings.

Don’t get me started on the mess people make on our planet. Unforgivable. There is no excuse.

This is a horrible post. No one is berating responsible dog owners here. I suspect that the posters who get all huffy have something to worry about. These threads hit a nerve.
thisplaceisweird · 20/07/2021 21:21

I tow a hard line. If your dog is not on a lead (unless it's a very wide open space like a huge field or empty beach) then you are the problem.

I really don't care about your recall or your friendly dog.

Arrowheart · 20/07/2021 21:21

@DottyHarmer

Dogs used to have more freedom.

My granny had a dog, Old Nick, years ago who would take himself off for the day and come home for dinner. People used to say, “Oh, I saw Old Nick up the park” etc - can you imagine that happening today?!

This really made me smile. I have this image of dogs all calling for their mates and then hanging around the park having loads of fun and then leaving when they're hungry.

Live and let live

As a dog walker I pick up the debris from the picnicers and BBQs and drinkers every morning- 365 days a year- rain and shine. Without us you would probably be sitting in a field of detritus.

My dog does the walk 365 days a year- very occasionally on a sunny day there are people sitting on the grass.

Everyone has a right to use the park- not just fair weather visitors.

This with bells on
thisplaceisweird · 20/07/2021 21:22

@CharleyChook some dogs need a full year to get over their trauma post shelters/abandonment. Then what? A year of horrendous walks or simply no walks??? What a stupid post

CharleyChook · 20/07/2021 21:23

And those in the process of training

Why do you think ‘training’ = allowing them to snarl and gnash their teeth at other dogs and people?

You haven’t really spent time in any country with stray dogs living on the streets, have you?

That really is not our problem is it though? You want to rescue a dog, you design and pay for safe places for them to be trained.
If your dog is learning on my child or my belongings, the law does not accept it and neither do I.
Calling people stupid won’t make you smart either.

Oh ffs, sorry for smiling. These were apparently dogs with homes to go back to judging by the PP so not stray.
thisplaceisweird · 20/07/2021 21:28

Ah ok so dogs that aren't totally trained don't get to have walks on tight leads and be trained in the process? And if they bark at a dog off lead that intimidates or frightens them because the owners don't think the laws apply to them, it's their fault? Ok.

Thank fuck I don't live in the UK

Correction - Any dog who is aggressive is not rehomed to people (who don’t have a clue) until their aggression has been dealt with, regardless of how long it takes.

Why would anyone take on a dog that they know is aggressive? Further more if they know their dog is aggressive|reactive why would they walk them around other dogs/people/children? It beggars belief!

LST · 20/07/2021 21:29

@Desperate30

And why are dogs now allowed in every coffee shop? Slobbering all over the floor, chairs, tables etc. Flicking their tails so hair goes everywhere and then the owners feeding them off their plates. 🤮
Because the owners of the coffee shop want to be dog friendly?
Wheretobuy · 20/07/2021 21:35

There is no way on earth we will bear a dog out on streets without its owner, let alone a bunch of them. I don’t care where they are going or coming from. Not near my house, not near where the village children play, not in the park and not on the country lanes. You would be hard pushed to find even one parent in our area who would accept that, let alone smile about them —in a deluded sort of way—. Thank god for that too.

Ffs. You sound fun.

I was smiling about an image I had in my head of dogs hanging around with their mates not about the reality. Maybe allow people to smile about that??? You are obviously very anti dog if you get uptight about people smiling about something. Did you think of that?

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/07/2021 21:41

And I smile about the image of dogs playing snooker too but know they don't. Is that ok?

gogohm · 20/07/2021 21:42

Dogs used to be allowed to roam the neighbourhood years ago. Far more leads now

Wheretobuy · 20/07/2021 21:42

@Arrowheart
I am not anti-dog. I am anti-uncontrolled dogs and dog owners. The image that brings a smile to your lips, makes me shudder. Fortunately, this is impossible in our country. I have been to places where it happens and seen accidents it can lead to.

MaMelon · 20/07/2021 21:48

They really weren’t allowed to. Maybe some did and maybe people turned a blind eye to Old Tom’s dog wandering round the village but it wasn’t allowed as such. Kids were still bitten by these dogs, they pooed on the pavement and no-one picked it up, they were run over, they were picked up as strays by the warden if they wandered too far. Most responsible owners just took their dog for a walk on the lead.
