What's your most expensive moment of stupidity?

Cheer me up MN.

I visited DF for the first time since moving a loooong way away on the train this weekend. The train fares were over £200 all in but worth it to see DF. Raced to the station today to get the connecting train home and realised the return journey I booked was, in fact, yesterday. Minutes to spare and only first class seats available. £198. So my two days with DF cost me over £400. What an absolute wally! Am trying to channel my inner Love Islander and just say "it is what it is" (and obviously being grateful I actually had the money in my account to buy it). I was trying to think back and I think this is probably my single most expensive incident of stupidity (the one time the waiter accidentally charged my card €300 instead of €30 not counting as that was his fault).

Tell me yours while I drink my fifth cup of free tea.

Hiring a breast feeding consultant.

(£240 FFS. Advice was totally impractical and I was never gonna be able to follow it and actually live my life).

AuntieJoyce · 19/07/2021 06:33

£100’s for a long drive and a sleep

I love this one Grin

I went to pick up a second hand Dyson for my daughter and ended up buying a classic Lambretta! £20 Dyson became a £4,500 scooter...

Curiously when our fridge freezer conked out a week later DH insisted on buying a brand new one instead of letting me look for a cheap one to tide us over 🤣🤣🤣

rattlemehearties · 19/07/2021 06:50

@NeonDreams that would have been even more expensive in the UK as it would have been illegal to be driving without insurance

badacorn · 19/07/2021 08:17

Paid £200 for a work related course which I later found out I could get for free through work… painful.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/07/2021 08:51

A new double glazed double kitchen window that I hated from the first. Had asked for a double opener, not realising that that would mean a big swathe of plastic right at my eye level.

It went within a week - a few hundred £ down the drain.

Thanks for the advice, I will have a look at that. I could at least see whether there's a fault shown then. It's expensive when the Land Rover garage charges £500-600 just to look at a possible fault. If it's covered under the Land Rover warranty (which most faults are), the warranty will pay for the diagnostic fee. Except my local LR garage swears blind that they don't (even though it's a warranty through the same company). It's bizarre.

My last visit resulted in a rather public argument with the service man. When I pointed out that they'd always reimbursed me the diagnostic fees previously, he told me that they'd obviously billed me incorrectly the previous six visits. Given the garage is reimbursed by the warranty department, I genuinely can't understand why they want to charge me each time. I have a lovely local garage but sadly they're not authorised to carry out LR warranty repairs. I have tried 5 different LR garages over the years and they've all been as bad as each other (excluding the two that scraped my car and tried to deny it). It was in the garage for over two months one year.

And yes, the middle aged gangsta (made me laugh thank you) will indeed be buying a Skoda next time Blush

@rattlemehearties In Australia there are two types of insurance. Compulsory Third Party, which the other party/parties and is included in the car registration fee, and extra comprehensive insurance for other things. As the car was registered, it already had CTP, but the other more comprehensive insurance is the optional extra part. It sounds confusing I know.

NoProblem123 · 19/07/2021 10:27

@Unsuremover I’ve checked and it was definitely Blackpool & they drove !

So funny that other people have done the same Grin

violetbunny · 19/07/2021 10:28

@SpiderinaWingMirror

I had a Toyota yaris. Perfect car except the boot was quite big enough. After 12 months of it not quite fitting buggy etc I arranged to part ex it for a bigger car. Only when clearing it out did I find the button which shoved the back seats forward and made the boot bigger Never mentioned that to dh!

Oh no! I was actually thinking after I read the first 2 sentences you wrote, "but my Yaris has a button that moves the back seats forward"!

We were on holiday just outside the EU and DS wanted to get an update for his Pokemon Go game. I calculated the cost of the data to be 15p. I’d got my megas and gigas mixed up. It was £150. Poor DS was so upset he’d cost us that much money. A life lesson learned!

Bargebill19 · 19/07/2021 10:56

I have reversed into my parking spot and waved at dh, whilst simultaneously reversing over his motorbike, which was parked in my spot. Cue overtime to pay for the repairs.
I have also reversed the car into the side of our boat - fortunately no witness or damage.

edwinbear · 19/07/2021 11:04

Not me, but was sat next to my boss when it dawned on him that for his upcoming holiday (flying the following day), his wife had booked a hotel in the Maldives and he'd booked flights to Mauritius. Last minute flights to the Maldives cost him a packet!

@SmellyWindows

Saw someone trip and fall, stopped to help and waited for an ambulance which meant I was late back to my car and parking warden was sticking a ticket on as I arrived. I explained what had happened and he said it was no problem, just needed a quick call to the office and it would be cancelled. I thought he meant he would do it (stupid moment number one!) so binned the ticket and forgot about it. Then I moved house. First time I’d moved since getting my license so changed my insurance and driving license, but didn’t realise I had to change address on the owner form thing? (Stupid moment number two!) I only found out when the baliffs arrived at my previous house and tried to take furniture and the new owners decided to get in touch. It cost nearly £1,000 in fees and I’ve definitely learnt my lesson about moving!
My dh did that. Didn't realise you need to change the address on the owners form when we moved house. Got a bailiff letter a couple of years after moving, thought it was a scam but phoned anyway and turns out there was a fine. We thought we changed all the addresses we needed to. We won't forget next time should we need to move.
AwaAnBileYerHeid · 19/07/2021 11:46

@HangingOver I'm not sure if the train company you used does this but Scotrail does; you can get a refund for any unused portion of the ticket. I claimed mine back last month and got a bit back. Worth looking into.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 19/07/2021 11:52

@BuddleiasBeesAndButterflies

Splashed out on 5 tickets to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, thought it was a bit pricey at £625 but all the children have wanted to see it forever and after a year of cancelled holidays etc thought why not treat us all. After booking realised that was actually only for one half, and was actually £1250 Shock. It'd better be bloody amazing!
Wait, what? They charge separately for each half?? Is this normal?
AwaAnBileYerHeid · 19/07/2021 12:02

@sociallydistained

Oh also I guess my bee David Lloyd membership for £100 a month that I have no desire to use as I found out I’m pregnant and feel sick all the time and can’t use the spa now… also would not of signed into a years contract if I knew I’d be on maternity pay soon 🤦🏻‍♀️
You can freeze David Lloyd memberships for up to 9 months and only pay 25% of the membership fee.
TimeIhadaNameChange · 19/07/2021 12:38

@AwaAnBileYerHeid It's two, full-length plays.
@AwaAnBileYerHeid It's two, full-length plays.
Ah I see. She said one half of a play, I thought it was literally one half!
@MissingH0me feel so bad for you, but welcome to my life!
Oh no, @JanuaryJonez, what’s your sad story?

IamAporcupine · 19/07/2021 13:03

@OhEff

Slipped on a wet floor. Tried to stop myself by grabbing a set of racking. Racking came down on top of me... Along with £12k worth of laboratory equipment it housed. Not just the cost of replacing the equipment but millions of pounds worth of work was delayed by months whilst it was replaced.
This has to be the worst off all, and not just because of the money... Are you still working at the same place/field?

I misplaced some precious biological samples and I cannot forgive myself Sad.

Twospaniels · 19/07/2021 13:17

Another fuel one, but it was husband not me.
He put petrol in the diesel car and drove it even though it felt “funny”. He drove it til the engine packed up. £2000 for a new engine!

Twospaniels · 19/07/2021 13:20

Got in some mad bidding war on ebay for a book. It’s an old book and hard to find from my childhood. Should probably have paid around £40-£50, but paid £200 in the end.
Ive had it now for about 10 years and recently checked around to see what it’s worth now, around £40 🤷🏼‍♀️

Charliecatpaws · 19/07/2021 16:51

@ladamanera

Drunkenly broke my friend’s parent’s wedding crystal glass (they’d been married 50 years, too) by sweeping it off the table with my elbow. Got up to clear it up and fell over and broke two more. Grandly offered to replace like for like and took photos of said glasses. Replacement three glasses (which waterford still sold) cost over £900. And everyone there who aren’t his parents still joke about it ten years later. His parents were impressed I came through, though. My own parents weren’t.
Good God couldn't they have claimed in their insurance and you pay the excess?
