What's your most expensive moment of stupidity?

Cheer me up MN.

I visited DF for the first time since moving a loooong way away on the train this weekend. The train fares were over £200 all in but worth it to see DF. Raced to the station today to get the connecting train home and realised the return journey I booked was, in fact, yesterday. Minutes to spare and only first class seats available. £198. So my two days with DF cost me over £400. What an absolute wally! Am trying to channel my inner Love Islander and just say "it is what it is" (and obviously being grateful I actually had the money in my account to buy it). I was trying to think back and I think this is probably my single most expensive incident of stupidity (the one time the waiter accidentally charged my card €300 instead of €30 not counting as that was his fault).

Tell me yours while I drink my fifth cup of free tea.

Oh, and last week I left my laptop outside when I had to hop on my bike and get ds10 from summer holiday camp when he had an asd meltdown. And forgot about it until an hour into a massive thunderstorm. Have attempted to dry it but haven’t dared turn it on yet.

Funny how there is are common themes of tech and transport.

Just remembered another one. BIL owed us $1000. He brought it over in a paper bag for some reason. We accidentally recycled it!

Oh no, that's awful. I went through a very rocky patch with dh as he is just so bad at managing money and has cost us thousands that we don't have. Hope you can work it out - maybe put it back on the market?

I’ve been wanting to start a thread about it for ages but can’t decide how to frame it, i.e. am I to blame for the house fiasco or is DH? Or possibly both?

Just booke some tickets for Elton John’s rescheduled concerts for next year. After I purchased I realised I’d booked the wrong city. A 15hr drive away Grin Angry. I bought cheap seats but it was still about $360. Can’t afford to rebook in our city and can’t resell at the moment. What a twit.

He has actually agreed to look for something in the old neighbourhood but that has shot up in value since we left and houses rarely come up so it’s proving difficult in more than one way.

@Msgiggles30

Petrol in my new diesel car.. £50 fuel wasted plus £250 to drain it!
We did that not once, but twice. Grin

Oh god! One reason to hope for another lockdown, I suppose?! Or maybe you’ll be able to sell nearer the time.

Not a massive mistake, not vastly expensive but one year my DFIL gave the two step kids £75 each in cash, for christmas. Stepson put his straight into his back pocket. Stepdaughter left hers in the envelope. You guessed it, it got thrown out with all the wrapping paper. By me Blush

KeflavikAirport · 18/07/2021 18:39

Most expensive mistake? The kids

alwayswrighty · 18/07/2021 18:41

Marrying my exh. Cost me 40k in the divorce cunt

BuddleiasBeesAndButterflies · 18/07/2021 18:48

Splashed out on 5 tickets to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, thought it was a bit pricey at £625 but all the children have wanted to see it forever and after a year of cancelled holidays etc thought why not treat us all. After booking realised that was actually only for one half, and was actually £1250 Shock. It'd better be bloody amazing!

Gerwurtztraminer · 18/07/2021 18:53

Many years ago a friend had vouchers for a photo shoot with free hair & makeup makeover and one free photo each. We thought it would be a fun but cheap girly thing to do together.

Very slick operation. They plied us with cheap bubbly, took loads of shots in various outfits and were very very persuasive - £150 each later we had a CD collection of photo's we hadn't expected to pay for. Felt very stupid by the time we'd sobered up and now (of course) I've misplaced the damn CD.

The washing machine broke badly enough to need replacing. After buying a new one, I found the guarantee for the old one which was still in date. It was a few years ago, I still haven't told DH 😂

Few weeks ago a bird shit on my designer sunglasses... Grabbed a bottle of Flash from my car and swilled them off...
Knackered shades. Gutted..

Peacelillyhippy · 18/07/2021 19:12

Hire car for holiday. Hired a car from a dodgy-as-fuck unit. They offered me a £25 discount for cash. Machine "gave" me £250, which i either didn't collect or was swallowed. I have literally forgotten how to get cash out of the hole in the wall. Got money from supermarket. Scraped car against a stone wall in a panic. Should be another £250.

Normally i am very careful driver, but this fucking car is jinxed. I reckon £500 down the drain in total plus mother of all rows with dh because I am fed up of having to drive, hire cars, pay for cars, navigate journeys, while he sleeps and magically awakes at a destination (no driving license because he's "not interested in cars").

And breathe.....

Peacelillyhippy · 18/07/2021 19:12

Thanks for the opportunity of getting that off my cheat.

BusterGonad · 18/07/2021 19:17

We missed our flights home due to the fact they emailed my husband the flight change, he didn't check his emails and when we checked in it was the new self check-in, the tickets came out like a receipt and we didn't check the finer details as I checked our flight (original flight number) that morning on line. We sat and had a beer, I then went to check on the board, flight number on the print out was different, confusion, I can't work out what's gone wrong, flight number on the ticket on the board had been 'final call for boarding' panic... Panic... Panic. Jeepers, the thought of telling my husband. It was awful. £1000 and 6 hours later we board our new flight. Obviously as is sods law are suitcases managed to get the flight we missed.

Gatehouse77 · 18/07/2021 19:18

Booked flights to Miami instead of Orlando so had to hire a car for a week longer than needed, plus petrol, plus time spent getting there and back.

Didn’t know you needed a visa for Australia till I arrived at the airport and there were complications so missed my flight. Business class prices 😩

Washed DD’s iPod that she’d left on her bed and I didn’t notice it when I stripped it.

PattyPan · 18/07/2021 19:19

Once a waiter misheard me and brought champagne instead of Chenin blanc and I was too embarrassed to correct him. It was £16 for one glass!

SirGawain · 18/07/2021 19:22

@Calmyertits

Dropped a tin of green paint out of my loft hatch all over my wool CREAM landing carpet. And my daughter... completely ruined it and still not replaced it after we had to rip it up, so got knows what it's going to cost as the stairs will need doing too. The more i tried to clean it up, the more mess i made. Took nearly 3 hours to clean up and i still find paint on stuff
Doesn’t your house insurance cover things like this?
Badoukas · 18/07/2021 19:28

Paying too much for a house.

InsideNumberNine · 18/07/2021 19:29

Ds3 left a bowl of raisins on the floor. Dog ate them.

Vet presented two options - pump his stomach for £80 or admit him for observations for two nights. It was very much a case of "do you love your dog £80 much??? Or £1095 much?"

Obvs had to go for the second option. And no, no pet insurance.
