What can I train as quickly that has a good income ?

I messed up my career choices at school as was unwell and had no direction

Messed up early adult life and ended up in a terribly abusive relationship

Now my life is just crap I’m fed up of just getting By not working on UC.
My DP works but I want to contribute too at some point

What can I train as ? I’m 40. So could train for a few years while on UC and then get a job based on whatever I chose ? But what is a good choice that earns good money

Something that doesn’t involve an enhanced dbs as I won’t pass that because when ex was abusive I once fought back. Plus I have CCJ in my name because of him so that may impact choices.

I just want a good job, a career and money to get decent stuff

Not to say that my life is bad now as I do t go without but I want more ? And more of a future and just to do something rather than nothing

What would you count as ‘good money’?
And what are you interested in?

LadyLolaRuben · 17/07/2021 19:52

What type of industry and employment would you be intetested in? Getting a skill is good so that you can become self employed. My friend has just trained in dog grooming, put a room aside in her house as a grooming parlour and is now self employed and fully booked

I have GCSEs and a levels but they weren’t in subjects I liked / wanted to do.

I’m actually not sure as I have so little direction. I know I can’t do anything childcare/caring.
Nothing financial
Not public facing

I would like to do something perhaps where I could use my English skills but I’m not sure what? I also did very well at science but don’t think that would fit anywhere
I’m a bit lost. Where can you go to get careers advice is there such a place for adults ?

Civil service?

whatCanIdono · 17/07/2021 19:57

It just one of those moments where I’ve thought damn I wish i worked harder at school and had been given good advice

Instructional design or just learning and development in general?

name6785 · 17/07/2021 20:00

Civil service?

Even the lowest security level roles in government will require DBS.

whatCanIdono · 17/07/2021 20:02

Now dp thinks things are fine and I just feel restless. We have security but I want more and I don’t know why but I feel like I’m wasting my life doing nothing

Do you have maths and English GCSEs at grade C and above?

Are you sure you wouldn’t pass a dbs check?

Unsure1983 · 17/07/2021 20:07

Freelancer on Upwork.com. writer is a good thing to start off as

If you enjoy science then there are loads of options there. You would need to do some training but them you could be working in NHS testing labs, or doing research, or doing services for researchers. All of those will need a minimum of an hnd or, better still, a degree.

Yes I have those. I wouldn’t pass an enhanced one as on one occasion I fought back but he called the police on me to cover his tracks. I accepted a caution as thought I’d get out of custody quicker as he had been left with our baby and I was scared so that will still show up

I will have to look up how to go about a degree at my age is it hideously expensive?

As much as I want more money coming in it’s not essential as we are ok but I feel restless and bored with life

IknowThisIsRidiculous · 17/07/2021 20:19

OP is your desire about money or purpose?

You allude to being bored. If it's about purpose I would start out by volunteering and seeing where you get the most satisfaction, and that might help you decide where to focus you attention on training.

Crazydoglady1980 · 17/07/2021 20:21

Don’t assume that having fought back would mean you fail the DBS. Employers can be very supportive when people are up front about anything that comes up on one. It then means the employer can decide, often they take into account how long ago it was, any circumstances surrounding it. It would be more of an issue if there were repeated offences.

There are adult apprenticeships out there now. In carious professions. You get a low wage to start but work and study at same time to be qualified to level 3 and even beyond into degree apprenticeships. You do need to have a think about what might interest you though

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 17/07/2021 20:28

Open University, you can study part time and take 6 years to get a degree or do it in 3. You'll get a student loan which will cost £6k per full time equivalent year instead of the £9k + living expenses etc of a normal university. They also offer free courses, HNC, HNDs etc not just full degrees. Courses tend to start in Sept Or February

fantastaballs · 17/07/2021 20:31

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime

You have the price for the ou very wrong. It's over 9k a fully time year, was cheaper for me to go a red brick uni for my masters than it was for the ou!

Plumbing

Jerima · 17/07/2021 20:34

Go and buy a DBS and see what it says then take it from there

BakedTattie · 17/07/2021 20:37

Would you manage an upfront payment for a course? I did one for £2k years ago and now earn in excess of £80ph with the ability to earn a lot lot more.

how about a degree apprenticeship?
If I were younger than I am I would think this were a really good option.
Pay, training, further quals to gain, challenge

beigebrownblue · 17/07/2021 20:41

also there is NHS funding for vocational degrees like nursing
