I messed up my career choices at school as was unwell and had no direction

Messed up early adult life and ended up in a terribly abusive relationship

Now my life is just crap I’m fed up of just getting By not working on UC.
My DP works but I want to contribute too at some point

What can I train as ? I’m 40. So could train for a few years while on UC and then get a job based on whatever I chose ? But what is a good choice that earns good money

Something that doesn’t involve an enhanced dbs as I won’t pass that because when ex was abusive I once fought back. Plus I have CCJ in my name because of him so that may impact choices.

I just want a good job, a career and money to get decent stuff

Try taking this in stages.

Learn to to drive a bus, many companies desperate and they run the courses.

Then switch to trucks and longer distances. Bigger Vehicles. More independence.
Multi drop deliveries are hell for a novice, I know.
I settled into 7.5t doing a few drops per day usually about 200 miles and 15 drops to companies or shops NOT private addresses.
Containers are even easier, longer journeys Say Felixstowe to Bristol.
If you get nights away you can study with your laptop.
Work for the best company that will have you. Norbert Dentraessagle were the best in my day.
All the time you will be thinking and planning but getting wages.
Good Luck with you change of career, whatever you do.

@BaileysforBreakfast Thank you, I was sure my OU figures were correct (should be I've been paying them for 5 years!). Perhaps the previous posters were looking at post graduate courses and not the UG ones I was referring to.

How about TEFL? You can qualify at home and work as little or as much as you want. Good use of your English skills!

Word of caution: enjoying learning about science doesn't tell you much about whether you would enjoy working in a lab. If you're considering scientific roles look into what the job entails very carefully; some roles are very routine/repetitive and 100 miles away from the experience of learning fascinating details about how the world works.

Painting and decorating, no training requires (but worth reading up on the right way to do things), minimal outlay and in HUGE demand.

@UnGoogled

Instructional design or just learning and development in general?
The OP would need a lot more than GCSEs and A-levels to be an instructional / learning designer. Many LDs / IDs have PhDs as well as knowledge of a range of software packages as well as an educational / teaching background.

For L & D the OP would need experience and qualifications.

I was going to say painting and decorating. You don’t need the same sort of formal training as some other trades and you can set up on your own with very little outlay. It’s hard work, but there isn’t quite the physical strength demands of some other trades. It’s in very high demand and probably easy to get work

That's a good shout, actually. I wouldn't have minded a decent decorator recently, instead of having to do it myself!
