Sainsburys refusing to issue a recall on this cat food

I don't know if people are aware, but there have been hundreds of cats who have been affected by pancytopenia in the UK. Over 500 have died.

Around three different manufacturers are involved, one being Sainsburys. The other manufacturers have issued a recall, but Sainsburys have refused to and the affected food is still being sold in some stores. I'm a member of a facebook group for this issue and it is full of heartbreaking stories and photos of cats who have died and who are still dying.

I am disgusted that Sainsburys are refusing to address this issue.

Also, another manufacturer is having difficulty with their cat food which is making cats sick and they're refusing to address the issue as well.

OP, Maybe it would be a better idea to liaise with MNHQ to get them to post a notice explaining the chemical involved and the damage it can do to cats, and urging cat owners to check the ingredients on their cat foods. Then get them to sticky it to the top of the page.

I absolutely agree that if there’s an issue then owners need to be aware, but I know from bitter experience that even the smallest statement made online could potentially leave you open to action. And with bigger companies they have so much more clout behind them. Iyswim.

If you do it that way then you’re not naming individual companies and potentially facing any repercussions. But the information would still be out there.

I am confused - is it a Felix problem or a Sainsbury's problem?
Where are the FACTS please.

There hasn't been anything that's been identified as what's causing it. There's no chemical involved.

Sainsburys are linked to the pancytopenia. Sainsburys have been slow to react and address the issue. Around 500 cats have died and are still dying.

Some Felix products (purina) food has been causing diarrhoea, sickness and worse and purina aren't addressing the problem.

So hundreds of cats are dying of some condition or other and the reason is identified but the blame is being laid at the door of several manufacturers of cat food?

This makes no sense. Surely if there isn’t just 1 food involved then it’s unlikely to be an issue with the food and more likely to be an outbreak of whatever it is.

daisycottage · 16/07/2021 18:14

Two separate Facebook groups have been set up for those who are concerned.

OP posts:
daisycottage · 16/07/2021 18:15

They're two different, separate health problems.

The pancytopenia cases have been linked to one particular factory in this country.

Um, this is potentially extremely libellous.

You need to be very careful re throwing those kinds of statements out there if there is no actual proof to back them up or MN (and you personally) could face litigation.

I understand the upset, but A, sainsburys have issued recall notices in their stores so that’s a libel action right there, and you’ve only posted that felix cat food is affected, with nothing to back it up, so again, another potential libel action.

How's it libellous when it's on Sainbo's own website Confused

@daisycottage

On the Sainsbury’s website they have a recall notice up for this food

Are you sure the picture you shared isn’t different batches?

There are two separate issues as far as I know.

Pancytopenia - some Sains cat food and another brand have been recalled. Assume made in same factory by same company. Deadly.

Felix. Some causing sickness.

It's been traced to the ingredients used by that manufacturer. So it does make sense.

Clearly her branch hasn't acknowledged it. Sains has at corporate level.
daisycottage · 16/07/2021 18:29

The people on the fb group are reporting that workers in the store don't know and that notices aren't up.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 16/07/2021 18:34

I contacted the manufacturers of Felix after reading a FB scare story. They deny any issue. Some cat food is under investigation. Not theirs.
I haven’t seen any actual evidence that Felix is causing illness in cats. No recall. No vets speaking out. No news reports. Just tumour and speculation. I hope it’s not true.

Wolfiefan · 16/07/2021 18:35

Tumour?
Rumour. Confused
