🎵 Every day I hear a different story
People sayin' that you’re no good for me
Saw your lover with another
And she’s making a fool of you, oh

🎵 If you love me baby, you'd deny it
But you laugh and tell me I should try it
Tell me I’m a baby, and I don't understand

Go Wham!

@110APiccadilly

People can't reason or generalise. They can't see that if they hand over bodily autonomy, then that could be applied to things other than Covid. They can't see that the government don't need to microchip is to track us if they insist on vaccine passports. They've always had (a reasonable level of) freedom and they can't see how easy it is to lose it.
In the context of some American states' attitudes to abortion, and organisations lile the Taliban, there is always someone out there willing to wield power and deprive others of their rights and autonomy. We're lucky in the UK that it's been centuries for us, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be aware how precious our liberty is.

When I first read the Handmaid's Tale 20+ years ago, the bit that really chilled me was the women suddenly realising they'd lost control of their bank accounts, that freezing out a sector of society could be done so easily.

At what point do the likes of France or Italy revoke all this vaccine passport nonsense because it's disproportionate to the illness and the other vaccines on offer.

Because of age, both DH and the DCs will receive flu vaccines over the winter. Flu is the same league as Covid, yet no one has ever quibbled about whether I've been vaccinated or not and how much I'm a bio-hazard to others. When I was pg in 2010, I wasn't quibbling over other people's vaccinations during swine flu. I had my jab when offered and that was that.

I do feel like governments have got themselves trapped on a treadmill and ideology that they don't know how to get off (and in the case of many, don't want to because of a dose of saviour complex).

Because my mum is a real genuine anti-vaxxer, I wandered around for a fair few years of my adult life not vaccinated against anything at all. No one cared, even when I was working in a care home.

amicissimma · 18/09/2021 10:39

The choir I go to restarted this week. It was wonderful to be singing with a group again, even if there was more enthusiasm for lusty singing than carefully blending our voices.

At one point the leader made an amusing mistake and we all burst out laughing. I had forgotten the life-affirming joy of sharing a joke and laughter with other people, specially people I know and like.

I don't know whether to be more shocked that I hadn't realised what I had missed or that there are people who either don't get joy from such things or don't think it really matters - they'd rather be 'safe'.

ISaySteadyOn · 18/09/2021 12:18

If I have learned one thing from all this, it is that safety is overrated. I don't mean I am going to go jump out an aeroplane but rather, I would be happy if I lived years less but the years I had were filled with laughter and the people I love.

Taswama · 18/09/2021 20:53

That is lovely @amicissimma . I am in a choir at work, but unfortunately it hasn't restarted yet and I really miss it.

Totally agree with you @ISaySteadyOn !

BogRollBOGOF · 18/09/2021 21:39

I was volunteering at 5k parkrun this morning and at the last marshall point towards the finish. It was lovely to clap, cheer and enourage the runners coming by.
There were some aquaintances there, someone who vaguely recognised me from Guiding, a former parent from one youth group and people from parkrun. It is so ALIVE and healing for the soul. I can imagine choirs having the same effect.

I said years ago that if you wanted compliance re energy savings you would need to create an energy shortage and power cuts.

I first thought it when successive governments could not push through the severn barrier amongst others to create electricity. Public enquiries protest groups killed using water each time . It occurred to me that power cuts would make them back down

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 19/09/2021 18:29

I’m going to a gig tomorrow. It’s one of my favourite artists ever which is why I'm putting up with the following to be allowed in:

  • Have to show proof of vaccination/passport
  • PLUS do a LFT earlier on the day and register the result, and show (negative) result to the people on the door
  • We’ll be let in one seat row at a time from queues outside
  • Mask to be worn throughout the entire performance
  • Must face forward throughout
  • Singing along/cheering/whooping is ‘kindly discouraged’ Hmm
  • At the end of the show, let out one row at a time again

Now I’m doing this because I love this artist and it’s been so long since I saw live music.

But this is also ridiculous. If things stay this way it’ll kill the live music industry because no one will want to go.

justasking111 · 19/09/2021 18:33

What a faff, wonder if it will be adhered to singing along wise etc

Evenstar · 19/09/2021 18:39

We went to a gig the other night and the band got everyone up on their feet and singing to one song and singing along to most of the other songs. Everyone was free to get to their seats in any order. The only precaution seemed to be hand sanitizer on the way in and the cafe windows were open.

I think that must be the venue @BloodyStupidJohnson that are making all those rules.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 19/09/2021 19:38

I shall see and report back!

@Evenstar yep, it’s the venue. I do sort of feel for them, they’re desperate to avoid a) being the epicentre of an outbreak and b) there being another lockdown.

Taswama · 19/09/2021 20:45

You must really love them BSJ !

smallandimperfectlyformed · 19/09/2021 21:49

How disappointing BloodyStupidJohnson. Venues who have that many rules are not exactly conducive to a good time, but hope you enjoyed it anyway. There was an event this weekend that I wanted to go to- West End Live, a free performance of shows and musicals from the West End held in Trafalgar Square- but one of the conditions of entry was that you had to have the Covid-19 app on your phone showing you had been vaccinated if you were over 18. I have been but am massively opposed to my medical status being a condition of entry to anywhere- not judging you at all Boris, I can understand why you went. Hopefully this nonsense will stop soon!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 19/09/2021 21:51

Sorry re-read it Boris, have a good time tomorrow!

110APiccadilly · 19/09/2021 22:09

Apparently there's a small business somewhere vaguely in my local area who are demanding unvaccinated customers only! I happen to think this is also silly and unnecessarily divisive, but it did make me laugh.

I saw that did laugh and wondered what her customers would be like

I understand where they are coming from but I think, in her position, I would be more likely to say.

'I only want customers whose vaccine status I DON'T KNOW because it is none of my business. If you feel compelled to share then please go elsewhere'

ISaySteadyOn · 20/09/2021 06:54

Yes, I agree. If I had a bookshop (the only sort of shop I would consider) and wanted to make a statement, I would have a sign saying 'The only thing we need to know about you is if you love books. Everything else is irrelevant.'

Worldgonecrazy · 20/09/2021 07:20

@bloodystupidjohnson

Went to three gigs last week, plus two outdoor ones the previous fortnight. Checks were cursory, despite the pre-information circulated. I think bands are just really happy to be back out there.

One artist was positioned further back than usual, and less crowd contact than normal, but as the singer is now 71 I think maybe his life insurance company requested it Grin

I can count on one hand the number of audience members in masks, and definitely a lot of singing took place.

Hope you have a great time, it’s so good to be seeing live music again.

ISaySteadyOn · 20/09/2021 18:19

That's brilliant! I am very glad to hear it.

I have two events this week. A secondary school open evening and a drink at the pub with friends.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 20/09/2021 19:06

Have you guys seen the nonsense that Kaiser Chiefs did yesterday? Frontman Ricky Wilson got people to wave their 'clean hands' in the air and then cheer for which vaccine they had had. In the video I saw there is a dark haired man with a moustache wearing an orange short sleeve shirt who has the most confused expression on his face, like wtf have I just walked into? Can't get into singers/bands etc doing stuff like that

I dream of owning a bookshop. (I have a feeling I would be terrible at it as I wouldn't want to sell them though.)
ISaySteadyOn · 20/09/2021 21:36

You could run a private library? Then the books would come back. Smile

Ricky has gone so far down in my estimation for this.

I used to like the guy - but I very much doubt that I am of the demographic that concerns him.

I so so hope the younger people rise up and tell everyone to gtf. Our lives (as a whole not individual lives) are not and should not be important to them

ISaySteadyOn · 21/09/2021 07:57

Agree. I want my DC to have a normal youth where they make stupid mistakes and some good decisions and have good times and bad times.
