Can foxes climb/jump on to wheelie bin from the pavement

We have an odd side Garden that runs along the pavement, my neighbour told me this morning that the fox has been on the wheelie bin looking over the fence at our Guinea pigs, can anyone tell me if this is plausible- so normal height of large wheelie bin to the pavement. I ask because our neighbour is quite a peculiar old man that makes up quite a few things to get attention. He sits on the garage roof in his underpants sunbathing so he can see when you are coming and going. You can never get out of your house or come home without him talking to you for a very long time. He talks to loads of people passing his house in this way so he is not short of people to talk to. He winds up situations so for example, we had this man who kept using our residential street to run a business from a residential garage that he rented, most people were weary of him as he was sexist and intimidating. Anyway, he would park across my drive and I don't have a permit to park on the street so this was annoying when coming back from work as it is quite a congested area. I overheard my neighbour wind him up, saying that I was livid about the situation, the next day I had a dog poo on my doorstep and I think it was this guy getting revenge as he owned a huge dog that he would bring with him to his pseudo workshop, don't know for sure but I also overheard the mechanic guy say to a young woman jogging by that my husband was a stuck up Wanker and he had got his own back. My neighbour will say things like he is friends with Cher and he has one of the richest friends on the world who lives in the USA. Due to the hugely (what I suspect) is exaggerated stories and wanting to talk to you for hours, I am unsure if the fox thing is true as he knows I would be immediately alarmed. I WFH at the moment and have never seen this but still I don't know what to do as we have paid 2000 for fencing that is about 5ft7 around the court yard style garden so that we could let the Guinea pigs out to run around their hutch. If anyone has a clue or experience of this or what we can do I would be grateful.

Foxes absolutely can jump onto a wheelie bin and probably clear a fence if they wanted to. They are like dogs with cat software installed.

Your neighbour sounds like hard work though.

HarrietHairbrush · 15/07/2021 10:30

Yes quite easily. They are cunning bastards

Goldenbear · 15/07/2021 10:32

Oh crap, thanks for telling me. I do have a eglu fox proof bottom on the cage but still they will be terrified if it is circling them.

Definitely

HadaVerde · 15/07/2021 10:35

I’ve seen foxes jump my 6ft fence.

One also scared/stressed my hutched guinea pig to death.

SixStringFanjo · 15/07/2021 10:36

I'm afraid foxes can leap over a 6ft fence with or without a wheelie bin to help them.
Seen it several times and have even watched a fox leap onto the top of my 6ft fence, balance there and take another 3ft leap on to the roof of next door's outhouse, when I disturbed him in the garden.

MrsVeryTired · 15/07/2021 10:38

Google "fox leaping over fence" Grin
They are very athletic, definitely like a dog/cat cross

Goldenbear · 15/07/2021 10:38

6ft fence?!! Wow I really didn't think they could get a grip like that.

I've seen a fox in our garden jump onto the high side of a pent roof shed! About 10 ft high?

purplesequins · 15/07/2021 10:39

anywhere a cat can go a fox can as well.
so yes, very likely.

thewreckingcrew · 15/07/2021 10:39

Yes.

And rats can lift the lid of a wheelie bin and jump inside.

TheBeardedVulture · 15/07/2021 10:39

We have foxes living under my neighbour’s shed and I’ve regularly seen them clear a 6 foot wooden fence as easily as a cat.

livingwithbees · 15/07/2021 10:41

We often have a bastard fox sitting on the roof of our single story ‘house’ (we live in an annex) which is about 8 foot tall? So yes, definitely.

Goldenbear · 15/07/2021 10:41

I don't really know what else we can do. We had a Guinea pig and rabbit in a fairly rubbish run when I was a child in London suburbs and there were foxes as they ate a whole family of hedgehogs one night but they didn't get my pets at all. I suppose it was just luck.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 15/07/2021 10:46

I've heard foxes described as cat software running on dog hardware. They are very athletic!

Goldenbear · 15/07/2021 10:48

We are in an unusual location in that our house is in a fairly urban street with a railway station so lots of commuters and coming and going but it is a dead end and becomes woodland people walk regularly through the woods to get to a housing area the other side. The woodland area is full of foxes and other wildlife which I assume they eat but now they have got wind of our Guinea pigs the fox will keeping coming back I imagine, is that how foxes work?

livingwithbees · 15/07/2021 10:52

Possibly, they are quite opportunistic although we’ve lived with chickens in a garden previously in a fairly rural area and they were strangely never hassled by local foxes. Do you know anyone with a large dog who you can ‘borrow’ to put the fox off? There are loads of deterrents but I’m not convinced that any of them work effectively, they are wiley buggers.

Oldraver · 15/07/2021 11:22

I've seen a fox use our wheelie bin to jump over a fence. though in no doubt he could of jumped it anyway

Whingey · 15/07/2021 11:35

Brother in law in Enfield was always losing pet rabbits to foxes. They got hutches Open!😢

Goldenbear · 15/07/2021 11:47

Eek😬, poor rabbits, the hutch was a fortune and said fox proof, it is an eglu and you open the shutter doors with a tap like mechanism at the top but I'm more worried about the day time and the run. I do know someone with a dog but not a big dog. I think in the day there are so many dogs being walked up our road to the woods I haven't really seen any foxes but from dusk I suppose I spotted one at our gate in the winter, it was bold as didn't go when I was there. I suppose it was pretty hungry in the winter.

Maggiesfarm · 15/07/2021 11:55

Yes they can, I have seen it. They are quite agile.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/07/2021 12:03

They are pretty lazy predators though. If your guinea is proofed and not an easy target then potentially they won’t bother, in favour of something easier to get to.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 15/07/2021 12:15

Yep. We've had a fox watch us through the skylight of our side return.

Thelnebriati · 15/07/2021 12:30

Can you take your pets indoors at night? It would be safer for them.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 15/07/2021 12:31

yup

they are agile, crafty wankers. hate them
