Bridlington

We're going to Bridlington in a few weeks, staying very close to Gummers Wharf which looks quite central.

I was just wondering if any local folk or anyone who have been recently could tell me if that bit of the beach is good / if there are any parts of the beaches in Bridlington near there are good for rockpooling? And if there are any public toilets nearby that are open at the moment (planning ahead as we have small children!)? Are there boat trips going from that area too? My kids would really love to do that.

We've previously been to Scarborough and really love it, but don't know the Bridlington area at all so would really welcome any advice!

Bumping for you OP. I've been to Scarborough and Filey but not Bridlington.

Not been recently but the beach is lovely and they used to do a pirate ship boat trip

The beach at Bridlington is nice, there are two bays, South and North, you can walk easily from one to the other.
There are lots of free public toilets and they are much nicer than the ones in Scarborough.
The town centre is more run down than Scarborough and I don’t think that there is an old town area.
There is a lovely walk or you can take the land train to Sewerby Hall which has a small zoo and play area.
I am not aware of there being any rock pooling, you can go to Filey Brig for that but you need to check tide times.
You can go on boat rides from the harbour I’m not sure of the cost though.
I hope this helps, have a lovely holiday.

I grew up near bridlington. Sewerby beach or wave cut platform for rock pooling. North and south bay beaches are all sand. Theres Danes dyke which is a nice beach to the north and barmston to the south.
Pirate boat and I think the yorkshire bell from the harbour. Could be the flamborian as they sold one a while back.
The land train is nice. Sewerby hall and gardens, there's a animal park as well, is good and cheap.
The old town is lovely, there's the priory and bailey museum.
John bull rock factory, have to time it right to see rock being made.
There is a big lifeboat station. Flamborough is great, thorn wick bay and north landing. Bempton for the birds.

Heartbeats0708 · 14/07/2021 19:49

I've been relatively recently and the pirate ship was running trips, not the speedboat though.
The further north you go in Bridlington, the nicer the beach gets (less busy, more space). There's a lovely crazy golf with an ice cream/coffee shop that's worth a visit! Public toilets along the promenade were all open too. Have a great time OP!

mayblossominapril · 14/07/2021 19:51

They have recently renewed the leisure centre.
The old town is near the priory, at the top of Quay road
Its more of a locals town than Scarborough, mainly full of oldies so much nicer. There are some grim parts of scarborough, some rough characters and the town centre can be a bit threatening even in daylight! Bridlington is safe

OhGiveUp · 14/07/2021 19:53

Bridlington is fab, I go often.
There is a dog free beach with lifeguards quite central, it is cleaned and combed every morning.
All the public toilets are open.
There are boat trips running from the harbour, both speedboat and cruising type boats.
If you wander down the prom, or you can get a landtrain down the prom to the south shore, there is a lovely beach, again cleaned and combed every morning with a lovely cafe, however, dogs are allowed on that part.
If you go down the prom, there is a large paddling pool for kids, which is free to use with a grassy area around it, perfect for picnicking if you don't fancy sand sandwiches.
There are rock pools quite centrally when the tide is out.
Have a great time op

picklemewalnuts · 14/07/2021 19:53

Brid is the best place ever for public toilets.
John Bull rock is not doing demonstration at the moment because of Covid- that may change.
Sewerby is great. Well worth a visit.

The town is a bit tired, but it's fine. And it has a spoons (or two), so cheap reliable food.

katienana · 14/07/2021 19:55

There is an old town in Brid they filmed Dad's army there recently. If you park on the top road near the spa you can get parked easier than in the harbour. The beach is really big and very clean. The spa has excellent toilet facilities. There are a few shops there to get coffees. I would do am on the beach then go to the harbour to the pirate boat, its ridiculously cheap! Round the harbour there are loads of snacks bars again crazy cheap prices - £1 for a 99 usually. There is an outdoor funfair, also loads of arcades which the kids love. It is cheap and tacky but lots of fun and the beach is genuinely lovely.

pinkflask · 14/07/2021 19:57

The land train to Sewerby Hall is good - the cliff top is nice to walk along or if you want a full day, pay to get in to the Hall, there’s the house to look around, grounds with a big adventure playground, a little zoo and a cafe.

There’s a Bird of Prey centre near John Bull as well (and a soft play there for wet days!). Dane’s Dyke is a short drive out of town with a lovely walk to a more rocky beach, and nice picnic areas nearer the car park.

WarmSausageTea · 14/07/2021 20:37

Following with interest as DP and I are going in early September.

Can anyone recommend a favourite fish and chips place and/or other restaurants, please?

mayblossominapril · 14/07/2021 22:22

Crab sandwiches at the cafe at thornwixk bay
The expanse is nice for coffee/meal overlooking the sea if it’s bad weather

I like the cafe at the top of Boyes as it’s homemade food (more top end school dinners than restaurant but it is nice and cheap) with views over the town at one side and the South Bay at the other.
I like the chips from the chip shop near the expanse. There was one behind Yorkshire trading that chipped the potatoes into an old bath like on life on Mars before lock down, not sure if they still are! They were good chips.

ArnoldBee · 14/07/2021 22:46

The toilets in Bridlington are amazing - they also have a sign outside telling you where the other ones were so I took a pic on my phone for the duration of our visit.

We had the most amazing breakfast cobs at The Harbour Cafe. It's down some very old steps but the harbour workers used it too so that reassured us.

RevealTheLegend · 14/07/2021 22:58

FGS you lot shush.

Stop, telling everyone how good Brid is. They’ll all want one.

mayblossominapril · 15/07/2021 09:06

Another hidden gem is Lincolnshire. Everyone thinks of skeggie but the beach at chapel st Leonard’s is amazing and there are lots a lovely Georgian market towns if you travel in land a little.

cigarettesanddisappointment · 15/07/2021 09:15

Shamelessly following, as we're staying in Flamborough at the end of August.

Pootles34 · 15/07/2021 09:17

The leisure centre at Brid is great - couple of slides, splash area for little ones, and it looks over the beach - really lovely. I think it has a climbing wall as well.

149 is the best place for fish and chips, but its not in the centre - you'll have to drive to it, but it is really worth it.

Scarby9 · 15/07/2021 09:26

Definitely go to Sewerby Hall. You can take the land train up there which is an outing in itself - fun ride and fabulous views out over the bay.
Once there, the hall is very child friendly with lots of activities inside (and an Amy Johnson exhibition), and the zoo is fun. Penguins and guinea pigs are my favourites. Therre is an excellent huge park out the back too, and cafes. So that's one day planned.

PurpleRainDancer · 15/07/2021 09:28

What utter rubbish @mayblossominapril have you actually been to Scarborough?

Scarby9 · 15/07/2021 09:33

Oi! @mayblossominapril Who are you calling rough?
There are some deprived areas of Scarborough. No more than other seaside towns.
The town centre is doing fine - not remotely threatening!

ElementalIllusions · 15/07/2021 12:50

I’m actually really surprised by all of the positive comments.

Bridlington is in no way comparable to Scarborough, and if that is your idea of a good holiday location I would vastly reduced your expectations for Bridlington.

The seafront is ok for day trips but at 4-5pm everything beyond supermarkets and pubs completely closes and it’s pretty difficult to find anything to do.

As a side note Bridlington is significantly more deprived that most towns in East Yorkshire and a high number of homeless were moved there into temporary accommodation there during the pandemic, which has had a huge impact on the town.

Yes frequently its my nearest big town. I've been approached by men hassling for money for the bus, and seen things I don't want to see in the public loos. I do go to scarborough but I am very wary.
Pootles34 · 15/07/2021 13:21

Elementalillusions The op says she's already booked it, so I'm not sure negative comments about Brid as a whole would be very constructive here.

Grace58 · 15/07/2021 15:14

Thanks for all the advice - I love all the glowing reviews of the public loos!! Really appreciate all the food recommendations. We will definitely do the pirate ship and crazy golf, I just thought to check the tide timetables and realised it’s out around 10/11 this weekend so it’s good to have some ideas of things to occupy the smalls. I quite like crazy golf too haha! I’m not too put off by the negatives, someone said similar to us about Scarborough and we went for a day out and had a lovely time (but I’m sure the issues are more pronounced when you live locally).

Thanks so much!
