it made me sad to see a dog's lead attached to the waist of someone walking smartly

thereby lack of stopping, sniffing, doing business.
just walking for exercise.

am i wrong?

Em, no, you sound a bit odd. It’s not really any of your business, you know nothing about the dog or the owner, or the sort of walks they go on at other times.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 10:26

I couldn’t get worked up about it.

Not everyone has time to indulge every sniff of a lamppost on every walk.

Indoctro · 11/07/2021 10:26

Sniffing is a very important part of a dogs stimulation and in facts it's way more mentally tiring that walking

A 30 minute super slow walk allowing a dog to sniff will tire a dog much more than making it walk solid for 30 minutes.

Unfortunately I don't think many dog owners are aware of this fact.

Bluntness100 · 11/07/2021 10:27

Op yes you’re being weird, the owner knows the dog you don’t. You have no idea what other exercise the dog is getting, and most dogs are capable of pulling when they wish to stop

This! The walk is for the dog not the human. Let them sniff. Obv in your scenario we don't know what's actually happening though...
SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 10:27

What breed of dog?

I’d assume business and sniffing needs were addressed at other times.

Crockof · 11/07/2021 10:28

What's it with this influx of posters asking a question at the end of anything. Been a wave of them today/last night all with goady posts.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/07/2021 10:29

it is not goady, but otoh, it is not AIBU,

OP posts:
AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/07/2021 10:29

the dog didnt look comfortable to me

OP posts:
Einsteinsings · 11/07/2021 10:29

You have no idea of the context. I’m training our dog to run with me, so we do a couple of short walks a week on a waist running belt. He gets plenty of slow sniffy leaks and off lead walks too. I’d hate to think I’m being judged for a that

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 11/07/2021 10:29

gawd really??

We have dawdling walks, brisk walks, town walks, field runs, foresty hikes...I even have just bought one of those waist belt leads things to see if he might like that too.

you have a snapshot of one dog in one moment, have some sense to realise that.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/07/2021 10:30

also, i am not sure if treadmills are a good idea for a dog?
but convince me otherwise if you like?

OP posts:
ahoyshipmates · 11/07/2021 10:30

They may have just been for a stroll about in the woods while the dog ran about off the lead for two hours, and were on their way home.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/07/2021 10:31

oh @Einsteinsings, people make judgments

OP posts:
pilingup · 11/07/2021 10:31

You have no idea what they do the rest of the week?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 10:31

Again what breed of dog?

(Waits while OP hastily looks up and considers breeds most like to be affected negatively by this style of walking)

NoSquirrels · 11/07/2021 10:31

As a PP says, the dog probably gets off lead and sniffy walks other times. If you want to run with your dog on roads you need to train them in a waist belt, so that’s probably what was happening.

Ylfa · 11/07/2021 10:32

Sniffing things and brisk exercise are equally important but not to make dogs ‘tired’ Hmm - they’re both essential for mental wellbeing and physical health and fitness.

Crockof · 11/07/2021 10:33

@AbsolutelyPatsy

In fairness it may not be you, but there have been several threads written in a similar style. However whilst it maybe posted in chat you are actually asking aibu by putting 'am I wrong'

If you are real I don't see the issue, there are different types of walks. I walk mine on a waist lead when we are going somewhere ie we are walking but not A Walk. Then mine also gets sniffy walks . If I let him sniff all the time I'd never get to where I need to be and I'd rather he came with me than sat at home.

NoSquirrels · 11/07/2021 10:33

I mean, if it’s a French bulldog on a waist belt being dragged along at a pace, you’re less unreasonable than if it’s a Husky or a Dalmatian…

Crockof · 11/07/2021 10:33

Emusareweird · 11/07/2021 10:34

Having worked in animal welfare a dog being taken for a walk is not something I can get upset about Hmm.

M0nkeybars · 11/07/2021 10:35

I do of course let my dog stop and sniff but if I let her sniff every single thing she wanted to stop and sniff I wouldn't get to the end of the street!

They might be on their way somewhere like a park for off-lead time 🤷‍♀️

Crockof · 11/07/2021 10:35

This! The walk is for the dog not the human. Let them sniff

But what if the walk is for the Human and not the dog it's just tagging along. Or can dogs only walk On Dog Walks and should stay at home otherwise?

30degreesandmeltinghere · 11/07/2021 10:36

Actually op I agree with you and we have such a dog and lead!! Dh walks our husky on one and I hate it!! She loves 'our 'walks as she gets to walk next to our other ddogs and sniffs everywhere and everything!!
Personal choice I guess and dh prefers the waist lead. We have just started using a private field which the ddogs love so I bite my tongue and book a slot!
