Podcasts like Fortunately? Or other ideas?

I absolutely LOVE Fortunately with Fi and Jane but am always disappointed with it being over so quickly and there only being one a week!

Are there any others like it?

Or what podcasts do you also listen to if you listen to Fortunately. Even if v different? I'm fairly new to the podcast game but now love listening to something while exercising/walking/cleaning and need new ones to discover and get into.

I have listened to some audiobooks but find they require a bit more concentration at time so not as good when out and about. I enjoyed a couple of real crime ones from BBC Sounds but am not keen on anything too gruesome, have also enjoyed Teach Me a Lesson and You're Dead to Me but found them a bit hit and miss.

TIA

I love Fortunately too. It really was the highlight of some of the darkest weeks of lockdown.

I’ve enjoyed David Tennant does a podcast, Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s spinning plates, and How to Fail.

The Listening Project (BBC)
I love how varied it is and always feel I've learnt something afterwards.

Great thank you.

Are these all available on BBC Sounds? I've not strayed elsewhere..

Do you like romesh ranganathan? He does one with tom Davies called Wolf and Owl

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 21:07

I also listen to:

Happier with Gretchen Rubin
Pandora Sykes’ new Britney one
My Favourite Murder
Table Manners
Dear Joan and Jericha
French and Saunders Titting About (Audible)
Delete This
Dear Hank and John
Office Ladies
What If? With lorraine and Rosie
and more but can’t remember.
All pretty different!

The Laughs of Your Life with Doireann Garrihy is good. I listen on Spotify, doubt it's on BBC sounds as it's Irish.

Hoohaahoo · 10/07/2021 21:12

I love Adam Buxtons podcast. His guests are so varied. He does a ramble chat instead of an interview and it works so well.

AgnesNaismith · 10/07/2021 21:13

Louis Theroux’s Grounded podcasts were excellent
I also love a bit of Lockdown Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdecombe (currently on a hiatus)
Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster

NewallKnowall · 10/07/2021 21:14

Great, thanks for all these ideas!

I have Audible for books, didn't know they did podcasts. I don't have Spotify though unfortunately.

I did like 'You'll do'

Huge huge fan of Fortunately - I'm moving backwards - I'm now on this time last year! I agree it's a real lockdown highlight

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 10/07/2021 21:17

Yes - another fan of Louis Theroux here :-)

HollowTalk · 10/07/2021 21:20

Fortunately got me through lockdown and it's really interesting listening to old episodes because all my feelings come back in a flood. The Louis Theroux podcasts are really interesting as well as he is recording from his own home.

CatbellsQueen · 10/07/2021 21:25

Futility Closet is amazing... we have nearly caught up with it all and so I am excited to see this as hopefully I will have a replacement!!

NewallKnowall · 10/07/2021 21:42

Where do you find all these/what app do you listen through?

I enjoyed listening to LT read his book so will def look out the podcast.

I like What's Your Problem with Nick and Carol. It's Nick Abbot from LBC and Carol McGiffin. They are obviously great mates and it's good humoured ribbing between the two of them.

Also love Monkey Tennis which is a bit niche as its an Alan Partridge fan podcast.

Ponks · 10/07/2021 21:48

Postcards from Midlife
No such thing as a Fish
Rambling with Claire Balding
I listen on the Acast app.

WaltzingBetty · 10/07/2021 21:48

@NewallKnowall

Most phones will have a podcast app. On apple it's simply called podcasts and has a purple icon, and you can browse and download directly.

WaltzingBetty · 10/07/2021 21:48

Otherwise you can download through apps such as Stitcher

JudyMoonlight · 10/07/2021 21:51

For the many - it’s about politics/news but it’s between 2 friends (Iain Dale and Jacqui Smith former Home Secretary) so they spend almost as much time chatting about their personal lives etc so it’s quite informal.

Coffeeiloveyou1 · 10/07/2021 21:52

Shagged, Married, Annoyed (married couple), The High Low (now finished but can listen to old episodes). Something very different but also LOVED - My Dad wrote a porno

NewallKnowall · 10/07/2021 21:55

I'm loving all these suggestions - wish I'd asked before!

Thanks Waltzing, my phone is very old...

I’m a podcast nut! Some thoughts from me….

LOVE Fortunately - have listened to it for years and as a bonus can now sometimes tell Fi and Jane apart. Was slightly put off by my 80 year old mother recommending it to me recently - I think the switch to also being on R4 is changing the demographic - am already getting a bit Hmm at the readers’ emails.

I must be in a minority but I was really disappointed by the Lous Theroux ones - I thought they were self-indulgent and a bit lazy (interviewing people you were at Westminster with is not exactly cutting edge journalism).

Mathew Syed - Sideways is very tight and thought provoking.

There is a great one on R4 called It’s a Fair Cop - a guy who is/has been both a serving policeman and a stands up comedian. He unwinds these situations and ask how you think it should be policed - he’s very light touch, funny and I found it very eye-opening. I have 2 x late teens and I’ve tried to encourage them to listen to it to realise the levels of nuance the police have to deal with.

I like both How to Fail and Table Manners but they stand or fall on the guests and they sometimes have a run of duff ones.

Personally - and a recommendation from here that started me off - I LOVE More or Less. As the host Tim Harford says. - it puts the “fun” into the “fundamental misunderstanding of basic statistics”. It’s genuinely entertaining, interesting and accessible.

If you want a cracker of a 6 part serial the CryptoQueen podcast serial on R4 was brilliant (I think it won several awards)

If it's a smartphone it'll be fine for podcasts!
