Is this enough for a bbq?

I'm hosting my first bbq for 6 people and have my shopping list;

Sausages
Burgers
Chicken thighs or drumsticks
Fried onions

Ketchup & mustard.

Potato salad
Coleslaw
Green salad

Bread rolls
Crisps

Is this ok!? I always worry if I'm feeding people and never seem to get it right.

Green salad as in lettuce, cucumber plus tomatoes

Pudding? Veggie/vegan option (if needed)? Otherwise sounds great to me.

TurnStone · 10/07/2021 21:04

Just do sausages OR burgers, buy a box of strawberry and a box of chocolate Cornetto rip-offs for dessert, some Halloumi and vege sausages for the non meat eaters and IME you're done 🤞🏼

I’d add one more meat option.

Belly pork or something Smile x

Fried onions not necessary
Go for chicken mini fillets instead of thighs or drumsticks. Easier to cook, can be marinated etc.
can’t go wrong with a magnum for pudding.

LIZS · 10/07/2021 21:06

Maybe fish, chicken or veggie kebabs?

TheFlis12345 · 10/07/2021 21:07

Don’t forget cheese for the burgers!

Cosybelles · 10/07/2021 21:07

Yes that's perfect. Just double check no vegetarians. Enjoy it!

StartingGrid · 10/07/2021 21:09

Fried onions not necessary? Sacriledge! Don't forget the plastic cheese slices either, they're mandatory. I'd do a nice big bowl of pesto pasta, or tuna mayo pasta too, minimal effort, maximum filling.

PenguinBarnotBird · 10/07/2021 21:10

Mayonnaise
Drinks?

MissMissTorrance · 10/07/2021 21:12

Potato salad and coleslaw are great but mayonnaise is in both and I don't eat mayo.
Possibly add corn cobs?
I second the Cornetto or magnums.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 10/07/2021 21:15

100% agreed!

Just do sausages OR burgers
Absolutely don’t do this! Both are essential.

I’d do some veggie kebabs or grilled corn as an additional item too. Better to have too much (and leftovers for the morning!) than not enough.

Agree, and cheese slices.

Replace drumsticks with chicken and pepper kebabs in a nice bbq marinade and some pitta pockets and I'm very happy with that with a couple of sausages and lots salad. We do a huge bowl of finely chopped mixed salad with mixed green leaves, peppers, carrots, red onion, apple etc and a dressing. It is sweet, crunchy and very easy to eat with meat.

I wouldn't both with potato salad and crisps and would do a big homemade Coleslaw (lighter on the mayo than shop bought ones). Cheese slices go down well with the burger lovers.

Selection of Mini Magnums in the freezer for dessert if anyone wants something, but we don't generally do dessert at bbqs.

And lots of🍷🍸🍹🍺

Orangedaisy · 10/07/2021 21:21

I never eat chicken done on a bbq. Agreed you need cheese for burgers and pudding. Veg kebabs - just peppers cherry toms and courgette on a stick - are good.

Eleoura · 10/07/2021 21:21

How big is your BBQ? I've often run out of space and you either eat cold meats, or cook in the oven!

I agree with corn on the cob, cooked on the BBQ. I mix butter, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powders then add a thin layer to the corn, wrap in non-stick foil and cook on the BBQ.

I'd also be very cautious with the chicken. I've seen on SO many times, when its been black on the outside, and completely raw and bloody on the side. I'd be inclined to cooked partially in the oven earlier in the day, or even the day before, then finish off on the BBQ instead.

Roodicus21 · 10/07/2021 21:25

I'd add something like boiled/ jacket potatoes, corn on the cob or savoury rice.

Hoppinggreen · 10/07/2021 21:29

Bit meaty for my taste and I never eat sausages or burgers (not veggie though) but you know what your guests will like
I would suggest that of you are doing chicken drumsticks cook them in the oven for 20 minutes then finish on the BBQ

AubergineParmigiana · 10/07/2021 21:30

@StartingGrid plastic cheese absolutely is the bbq law! Though I've found I now start to type "plas..." into the search bar on my online shop as I forget it's not actually called that Grin

Pre cook the chicken since this is your first BBQ. Have fun!

I like BBQ (in tin foil) jacket potatoes, instead of potato salad. Might be easier too.

Indigopearl · 10/07/2021 21:34

I would swap the chicken thighs for jerk pork or another marinaded option or maybe chicken breast skewers with peppers as these will cook more evenly.

ForgedInFire · 10/07/2021 21:35

I agree with above- sausages and burgers are essential as are fried onions! I always do jacket potatoes as well, they are so easy, stay hot for ages, add a bit of cheaper bulk and are yummy!

I spent far too long trying to work out what plastic cheese was actually called.

UKmumtobe · 10/07/2021 21:54

Sounds great.

Garlic bread always goes down well at bbbqs!
Agree about the chicken - either pre-cook so you don't need to worry about it or maybe go for skewers.

Meringue nests, whipped cream and strawberries is always a winner for dessert!
