Is this enough for a bbq?

I'm hosting my first bbq for 6 people and have my shopping list;

Sausages
Burgers
Chicken thighs or drumsticks
Fried onions

Ketchup & mustard.

Potato salad
Coleslaw
Green salad

Bread rolls
Crisps

Is this ok!? I always worry if I'm feeding people and never seem to get it right.

Avoid chicken, difficult to cook evenly and you dont want to give your guests food poisoning.

Pork loins or pork kebabs, burgers and sausages, big salad, new potatoes, coleslaw, cheese with Eton mess or summer fruits pudding for dessert.

Eleoura that is terrible advice. Never part cook chicken, that day or day before even worse. Cook the chicken in advance and reheat to a high temperature yes, but part heat, then cook is guaranteed food poisoning.

Boil some baby new potatoes add some garlic butter and put them in foil parcels - onto the bbq while you’re doing the meat

Do salmon fillets instead of the chicken , gives more choice , or you could always buy a box of BBQ chicken drumsticks from the supermarket and just heat them up if you definitely want chicken . I wouldn’t eat chicken that someone else BBQed from raw . I also think you need something veggie as an option .

miltonj · 10/07/2021 22:15

Cheese slices, Mayo, and drinks. Other than that, perfect. And of course you need both burgers and sausages, don't think I've ever been to a bbq with just one, so don't listen to that!

If it’s a charcoal bbq, wrap smallish potatoes in foil and mix them in with the coals. The skin gets gloriously blackened and the flesh so fluffy.

Corn on the cob, bit of butter, lime juice and chilli flakes if you have them. Wrap in foil, sling on the grill, heavenly.

Halloumi is awesome.

Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham.

Fresh pineapple on the grill is amazing.

Mussels in foil packets with garlic, herbs and a dash of white wine.

Watermelon and feta salad.

I’d bbq every day if I could.

CatsArePeople · 10/07/2021 22:35

think about 300g meat per person. And don't forget beer

accentdusoleil · 10/07/2021 22:37

Corn on the cob ?

HelloWorld2577 · 10/07/2021 23:10

We usually do burgers, sausages (also buy frankfurters so that they are done quick for the kids), steaks, chicken breast skewers, and sometimes pork loin steaks or another random cut of meat. Oh and yes onions oh and also halloumi.

Sauces- mayonnaise, ketchup & mustard

Snacks- doritos & dips, bowl of crisps.

Dessert I don't thinks important for a bbq but if it's meant to be hot then would be good to just get some ice poles/cheap ice lollies like screwballs/choc ices etc.

And obviously hot dog rolls and burger buns, and drinks such as different fizzy drinks (lemonade, coke, Fanta etc), beers/kopperbergs are nice on a summers day too. But could ask people to bring alcoholic drinks.

BBQ sauce

Horrified at the advice to half cook chicken ahead of time - that’s a guaranteed way to seriously poison and possibly kill your guests.

You have to cook chicken all the way through, in one go. If you reheat cold chicken (and there’s no need because it’s lovely cold in salad) you make sure that it’s piping hot and not just warmed.

The easiest work around is to cook the chicken in the usual way in your kitchen oven and set the timer so you only have to pull it out when it dings. No need for doing anything in advance at all.

Safety lecture aside…

For pudding I would serve Eton mess disassembled - a big bowl of fruit, big bowl of crushed meringue and fresh whipped cream. Let guests make their own - gives everyone an option to go light, skip the dairy as needed with no extra work.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/07/2021 08:25

Quantity of food is fine, and you know your guests. Sausages and burgers are a bit dull and basic, I'd only have one of those, then chicken kebabs with peppers and onions (last night we had tikka marinaded chicken thighs with peppers and onions, delicious) and something more interesting like lamb ribs or pork belly.

If you go for boneless chicken thighs, they'll cook quicker and more evenly than drumsticks so less worry about being undercooked.

AlwaysLatte · 11/07/2021 08:29

I would add more salad - a rice or pasta salad perhaps? And some corn?

AlwaysLatte · 11/07/2021 08:33

Also rather than chicken drumsticks I'd do chicken kebabs, I usually do burgers, vegetable kebabs, sausages and corn on the bBq then cook the chicken kebabs in the oven. They tend to stick to the bbq!

HarebrightCedarmoon · 11/07/2021 08:41

I've never done fried onions at a barbecue, as I'd have to cook them in the kitchen. 🤷‍♀️

HarebrightCedarmoon · 11/07/2021 08:51

A BBQ isn't supposed to be about making stuff in advance and loads of effort, it's not a dinner party.

My advice is leave it all to DH and have a glass of wine with your friends. Food? Yeah, there will probably be some blackened sausages along at some point.

toastantea · 11/07/2021 09:01

From someone who had campylobacter from BBQ chicken I can wholeheartedly tell you chicken is not needed at your BBQ.

hogu · 11/07/2021 12:13

@HarebrightCedarmoon Spot on advice 😊

I am quite shocked that people don’t know how to cook chicken properly.

AppropriateAdult · 12/07/2021 18:29

Lots of good ideas here, OP, but to answer your question - your original list looks perfect, and I’m sure your guests will have a lovely day.
