Foam mattress-yes or no?

FrenchBoule · 10/07/2021 13:24

Looks like my mattress is nearing the end of its life so I’m on the look out for another one.

Anybody owns the foam one and could tell me how do they find it?
Open for any recommendation.

I’m after medium firm mattress and the current one is open spring one.

Not sure which one to go for, will probably gave to buy online.

Budget is up to £300 for a standard single one.

Thank you 🙂

I find them very hot and sweaty.

FrenchBoule · 10/07/2021 13:39

I’m not a sweaty sleeper (menopause hadn’t hit yet😉) but some of open coil ones have memory foam layer.

Apparently it’s like marmite-either you love it or hate it.

No. They don't hold their form, especially the cheaper ones. Over time, they will form dips.

If your budget is €300 then definitely foam. I bought an Emma mattress for my youngest & he loves it. Very comfy & I especially like that you can unzip & wash the top cover. There's always a 45% code on, so be sure to wait for one.

Gingernaut · 10/07/2021 13:44

No.

Memory foam is shit. Sit down and the whole bed tries to cocoon your arse.

A solid quality, pocket spring mattress all they way.

spinningspaniels · 10/07/2021 13:52

We've got foam mattresses on 3 beds. The grandkids bed has got a Dormeo mattress on and it's like sleeping on a board - horribly uncomfortable and I've had to put 2 toppers on it for the kids to be able to sleep.

The other 2 beds have got foam mattresses and are literally like sleeping on a cloud. They're Hestia latex and I think we've got the Elite 1200 ones. Worth every penny. simmonsandco.com/product/hestia-latex/

cannaethink · 10/07/2021 14:22

I’ve got a foam one from IKEA. It’s not memory foam, just firm foam. It was too hard on its own though so I got a memory foam topper and now it’s perfect! I prefer foam to springs.

username18702 · 10/07/2021 14:25

I've got a hybrid OP which is very comfortable. If I could afford it I'd get a spring wool one but unfortunately don't have thousands for a mattress. Mine is an Otty hybrid, they have springs and memory foam plus a cooling layer and I'm not too hot. It's quite firm though but I'm a side sleeper and it's perfect for me.

Frenchfancy · 10/07/2021 14:25

Latex is the best if you can afford it. Otherwise spring. Foam has no support and is not long lasting (holiday home owner with lots of beds)

longwayoff · 10/07/2021 14:29

I've got an Emma mattress, dont like it at all. Too soft.

Roystonv · 10/07/2021 14:31

I have a memory foam topper on a cheap mattress and it works well. Enough support from the mattress not to get that enclosed sticky overwhelmed feeling and topper gives a comfortable finish.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 10/07/2021 14:35

We got an Emma. I don’t like it. To hot and a weird texture. Miss my ancientspring mattress Sad

FrenchBoule · 10/07/2021 15:03

I ruled out the memory foam one.

I must say I was looking at one of Simba ones- a bit pricey but they offer 0% finance and a trial.

I’m cold sleeper, DH and kids are sweaty ones.
I don’t want to spend a fortune as we sometime play musical beds in the house but bouncing will be banned with new mattress as this is probably while the old one Silentnight Miracoil) failed.

I feel your pain, OP. I've been researching mattresses for the last few months as the one I bought last year is still too hard, despite me trying to soften it by walking up and down on it! I've had several toppers on it and still find it uncomfortable for side sleeping.
I thought an Emma or similar would be perfect, but like a PP mentioned they do seem to have issues with dipping after a while. Considering a hybrid but again not sure that won't go all dippy either.
I've spent hours and hours reading reviews and I'm no closer to a decision!

Kirstos1 · 13/07/2021 16:37

I got a memory foam at Christmas time from next. It was about £280 and it's been amazing. No more bad back when I wake up or my foot disappearing into a dent left by the springs. It was delivered rolled up and I'll be honest when I rolled it out onto the bed and it was as flat as a pancake, I didn't hold out much hope but with a couple of hours it was the right depth and I have slept really well every since. Thoroughly recommend op.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 14/07/2021 15:14

Hmmmmm. I commented that I found the Emma hot but after reading @Kirstos1’s post I’ve realised that I also am no longer waking up with a sore back! I currently have a serious leg injury so I’ve been more preoccupied with that but my back has been great! (I still think it’s hot though!)

ILoveShula · 14/07/2021 15:17

I have an Ikea Morgedal one. I don't find it hot but I would like a slightly firmer one.

Silkiecats · 14/07/2021 15:21

I've got a leesa memory foam one and absolutely love it, much better than spring ones which used to dig into me. Very solid but unfortunately they stopped selling them in Europe.

BatsInTheCellar · 14/07/2021 15:30

We've got a Sealy hybrid with geltex. It doesn't dip and is really comfortable. It's our third. I'd never buy a memory foam or foam bed for us, they just don't support you properly, but we do have one in a spare room - it's not very comfortable!

Latex beds are good (but hot), had a Dunlopillo one years ago which cost a fortune, but was incredibly comfortable. When we bought a new bed recently, the shop owner told us they aren't as good these days as there's less natural latex in them now.

To the poster whose bed is too hard, you could try a Devon Duvets wool topper, they make any bed more comfortable.

TestyMcTestFace0 · 14/07/2021 15:38

We bought an Otty about a month ago and hands down it's the most comfy mattress I've slept on. It's the hybrid one with a cooling layer (for my hot menopausal bod) and it's so comfy I don't want to get out of bed in the morning now. They come with a 100 day trial so you can always give it a whirl and send it back.

LadyofMisrule · 14/07/2021 20:27

We have an Emma. It's a huge improvement over our last traditional one. I sleep better and no longer have a sore back.

WisestIsShe · 14/07/2021 20:30

We have an Emma. I wouldn't buy another. DH loves it but I find it too hot and after we've had it 12 months there is an indentation where I lie. Hypnos premier Inn one next time!

@TestyMcTestFace0 do you have a link to the Otty hybrid please? They have a few hybrids now. Desperate for a new mattress, existing memory foam one is 14 years old Shock
ActonSquirrel · 10/08/2021 10:48

Is no one going to say it foam is difficult to have sex on.

You both sink into the mattress and there is no recoil / bounce back that you get from springs

MistySkiesAfterRain · 10/08/2021 10:55

I wouldn't long term, they do not support enough. If you are sold on it, try a pocket sprung mattress with a topper. The topper would be about 100-150. They are really hot as its synthetic foam next to your body.
