Strange comment from GP

I had a phone appointment yesterday. I didn’t recognise the name of the doctor so assumed he’s new or a locum. It’s a big medical centre. The call was about different painkillers and a muscle relaxant for an unstable joint that had partially dislocated and caused muscle spasms after it had gone back into place.

He asked if he could confirm my name and asked for my d.o.b. He sort of laughed a bit when I’d finished and said what a nice voice I had. He said it was very calm and relaxing and he said he felt like he might be the patient. I said oh ok thanks then he asked how he could help. It seemed a very strange thing to say. Not sure why I’m posting as it’s not something I’d complain about but it’s not something I’ve come across before either and it felt odd and derailed the appointment a bit. Is it me or was it a bit weird /unprofessional?

He has probably had phone call after phone call of stressed, panicking, worried people. He sounded relieved to be talking to someone calm. How nice of him!

It sounds perfectly normal to me - what's "strange" about it? People these days seem to be suspicious of every little comment made, the way people look at them, a stranger even saying "Hello" and just have to over-analyse it. Drives me mad.

Omg!

I'm not sure what's strange about it? He was probably just trying to break the ice, put you at ease...

VeryLongBeeeeep · 08/07/2021 10:40

I think I know where you're coming from OP. I wouldn't think it was sinister or complaint-worthy but I would think it was a surprisingly personal comment for a professional call in that setting. I wouldn't expect a healthcare professional to pay a compliment about a body part or personal attribute that wasn't directly related to the reason for the consultation, if that makes sense. I do get what other posters are saying though about he probably just opened his mouth without fully engaging his brain or it was a misguided attempt at rapport, so I wouldn't dwell on it.

Codoftherings · 08/07/2021 10:43

I think he was just being friendly and perhaps he is new so just being extra nice to folk. Nothing to think about too much in my opinion.

Literarydevice · 08/07/2021 11:26

muchasgracias. You are spot on. I'm laid up with back pain and haven't been out since Saturday. I'm bored witless.

I’ve told blokes they had a nice voice on the phone. It’s a bit odd but nothing to worry about.

Loubilou09 · 08/07/2021 15:15

Jeez....

I told a Canadian insurance agent that she had a really nice accent yesterday, I didn't think I was being weird in any way, shape or form. I just thought it was a nice voice!

Cowbells · 08/07/2021 15:44

Honestly? He was probably trying to make friendly small talk to relax you given that there are no F2F appointments these days. Don't go out of yoru way to find something unnerving in an innocuous compliment.

LaMarschallin · 08/07/2021 16:01

Bit of a coincidence, but I was scrolling through this while waiting for a regular outpatient appointment via telephone.

Phone just rang...

Me: Hello?

Dr: Is that LaMarschallin?

Me: Ye...

Dr: Ah yes! I recognise your voice.

Bloody annoyed she didn't say I sounded calm and relaxed.
Even though histrionic and squeaky would be a better description.

Theunamedcat · 08/07/2021 16:07

My doctor describes me as sensible and thorough somedays I would like to have a nice voice

LoveFall · 08/07/2021 17:31

In my experience a doctor asking how they can help is very common.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 08/07/2021 17:53

Are you Mariella Frostrup, OP? Grin

MrsLCS. No. I think my voice is awful. I hate hearing myself.. it's definitely nothing like Mariella Frostrup.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 08/07/2021 23:22

Everyone hates hearing their own voice, probably even Mariella Frostrup, it's totally normal! I suspect you are being too hard on yourself, and you sound a lot better than you think!

GinJeanie · 08/07/2021 23:34

Not sure if it's weird although I can see why you felt surprised. My GP said I looked really well the other day which was a nice compliment I guess (wasn't ill - getting IUD fitted!)...

swimlyn · 09/07/2021 00:12

I'd be feeling harassed by that. Totally unneccessary comment
IPMSL!

Literarydevice · 09/07/2021 05:26

I certainly didn’t feel harassed. It just took me by surprise.

The GP is human. Shocker.

I love it when any HCP engages with me on a human level.
