Nectar points

Sunnyday321 · 07/07/2021 17:21

We've never really bothered / taken much notice and don't redeem them. I've just downloaded the app and properly signed up and had this message :

As of 5th July 2021, you have 121,213 pts worth at least £606.07
So that's a nice bonus . How would be the best way to spend to maximise the points ?

And I was excited because I found £9 worth of points on my Costa card!

I save my nectar points for Double Up week which I think is usually October each year. You can exchange some for Double the amount and spend them in a number of non-food departments. Not sure what the max is though.

yeOldeTrout · 07/07/2021 17:27

I would spend it now on groceries because sainsbury's doesn't sell even £100 worth of non-food items I want -- and why not get the £606 back now.

Depends what non-food thing Sainsbury's sell that you might like.

Can doubled-points be spent on cleaning materials, cat food or bog roll? Still I would struggle to reach wanting to spend more than £50 at once on those combined.

longtompot · 07/07/2021 17:31

I don't know if you can use them on homewares, but they are linked with Argos so maybe something there?
When I've saved up a larger than £2.50 amount I spend it on the Christmas shop, or use it when we're a bit low on money that week.

You can spend nectar points at Vue cinemas or Eurostar or Argos and habitat too.

k567 · 07/07/2021 17:56

Maybe wait until around November/December when they have previously had a double-up event

Whitney168 · 07/07/2021 17:59

If you collect Avios, you can convert Nectar points to those.

lljkk · 08/07/2021 11:02

My 8755 Avios points are due to expire; I'll never get to spend them. very poor value ime. I hate most 'loyalty spending' schemes anyway.

Sunnyday321 · 08/07/2021 11:07

Thanks for suggestions. I'd never use Avios points.

The Christmas double up is usually on Taste the Difference wine, toys, maybe electronics and some other stuff I can't remember. You can probably find an old article on Moneysavingexpert or Hotukdeals giving an idea of the categories. There might have been limits, so you might not be able to use all the points this way.

I usually use mine to get a few bottles of nice fizz for Christmas.

I'm intrigued that you've obviously been a regular customer of Sainsburys for many years and never thought to use your point before now.

Nectar are not like Tesco where you can swap for higher value vouchers and deals at other shops/restaurants etc.

You might find it easier to just get free groceries for a few weeks or even donate some to charity if there's a mechanism to do this.

You can sell your avios points, I collect them if you were looking to sell ☺️
inappropriateraspberry · 08/07/2021 11:13

I'd spend them in Argos - could do your Xmas shopping early!

FoxtrotSkarloey · 08/07/2021 11:15

A couple of years ago we cashed in the lot with Expedia to take £400 off the cost of a holiday.

Sunnyday321 · 08/07/2021 11:24

We are not massive Sainsbury's shoppers. We have locked our card so you can't use them.
Probably been a Sainsbury shopper for 15-20 years and used the points only once before ( probably 8 years ago , made a big purchase , a tv ) so this is probably 8/9 years of points !
I tell my dh that we should use them every £50+ worth as in reality what you could have spent £50 worth 8 years ago would have given you more for your money than now.

We save them up during the year and spend it on Christmas. Last year our big shop cost us less than one pound after the points had been deducted. This year we have my siblings here - first time we’ve hosted Christmas. So again we will spend at Christmas and have a lovely couple of days, with anything we all want to eat.

Leeds2 · 08/07/2021 14:08

Sorry if I am being thick, but what do you mean by "you have locked your card so can't use them"? Can you not unlock the card?
Fwiw, I just spend mine to get a free shop when I have enough points.

Sunnyday321 · 08/07/2021 15:10

Yes you can phone them up and lock the card so that if lost someone can't pick it up and spend your points. Obviously wouldn't want that to happen if there is a decent amount on it. To unlock you telephone them again and give your account details.

Aperol I'd be delighted to sell you my Avios points pm me !

Whitney168 · 08/07/2021 19:16

Surely between Argos and Sainsbury’s, you must be able to find something useful?

Cam2020 · 08/07/2021 19:21

I'm just impressed anyone could ever amass so many, they're virtually worthless since they changed the scheme!

I'd be putting them towards my Christmas budget (food, drink and anything from Argos anyone wants) and soending the equivalent elsewhere, personally. Could also do the same with a weekly shop - soend the points, and give yourself the money you wpuld have spent back!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 08/07/2021 19:25

I don't shop much in Sainsburys but I had enough to replace a toaster recently from Argos. Maybe not the most expensive one you can get but free is free

How are they worthless?

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2021 19:33

I don't really take loyalty points into account when shopping, after all, its cheaper to shop in Asda, Aldi or Lidl than somewhere like Sainsbury's or Tesco who give points.

But if I do acquire any (we get most Nectar points from ebay and BP as that's where the fuel card my work pool car is) I won't let them go to waste so double up on wine if nothing else.

LadyCatStark · 08/07/2021 19:44

We save ours up and use them at Christmas. If you have kids you could probably do a full set of Christmas presents for free!

AngusThermopyle · 08/07/2021 19:51

Do you have young children? You could buy champagne for a future special occasion/birthday and stash it for a few years.

Sunnyday321 · 08/07/2021 20:32

More great ideas. Thanks.

I use mine for Christmas shopping.... You can spend In argos too - may not always be the best deals around but if its effectively free its not so bad 😊
