What do thin/slim people eat?

I'm genuinely intrigued as I am far from slim with a BMI of 30.

Watching an American series with some very tiny actresses and thinking that they can't eat much. It was the Bold Type.

So if you are slim with BMI around 20 what do you eat?

And I suppose how much do you exercise? But I reckon the old rule of 80% diet : 20 % exercise is right when It comes to weight management.

My best friend has always been super slim. She eats whatever she fancies to be honest, but the 'secret' is that she doesn't have the emotional association with food a lot of us have...and she only eats when she's hungry and only until she's nicely satisfied and no more. I wish I was like herS

Gorgeouslilgirl · 06/07/2021 20:56

BMI between 18 and 19.

I’m vegetarian. Usually cook at home. Very little pasta and rice.

Loads of vegetables, yogurt and eggs.

I have a bit of a sweet tooth at the moment, so I’ve made some date and nut balls to have with coffee (just dates and nuts)

I recently did a reset and am mostly back to my normal ways of eating - two meals a day. One full meal and one light one.

Wombat36 · 06/07/2021 20:58

My DH has a Bmi of 20. He eats the same as me, bmi 35. He doesn't snack, drink alcohol or eat any ultra processed food. My weight creeps up & I don't adjust, he eats less if his does, hasn't gone more than 2kg heavier over the last 10 years.

I have really cut back on my exercise at the moment. Just a 10 minute yoga stretch in the morning or something with weights. And usually a 45 minute walk in the evening. The latter is mostly for the dog!

Cazzovuoi · 06/07/2021 20:58

I lost 9 stone without a bit of exercise. Zero. Zilch.

Now I eat a mostly carnivore diet with a lot of meat, some cheese and yoghurt, fruit like berries, avocado and sour apples and sometimes honey. No veg. I have maintained the loss for 5 years.

I am 9 stone with BMI of 22.

WingBingo · 06/07/2021 20:59

BMI 19

I eat twice a day and barely any snacking. Those two meals are nutritious (mostly), colourful and very tasty.

Also I don’t have a very sweet tooth so puddings are rare.

reducingfootprint · 06/07/2021 21:01

its not some magical secret, I've a bmi of 18 and eat whatever anyone else eats but only when i am hungry and until i am 75% full (brain takes a while to recognise fully hungry so prevents over eating)

I know that personally i need X amount of calories so i try not to go over that but i don't necessarily calorie count

cherrypiepie · 06/07/2021 21:02

Do you miss or crave any foods?

This is very interesting. Very little processed food, lower carbs and and two meals.

I've just lost 2.5 stone on fast 800.

My BMI is 20 and I would agree with @AubergineParmigiana. I’m not in an emotional relationship with food. I’m into fitness so I eat high protein, medium carb, low to medium fat, and track what I eat - typically around 1200 cals per day. I enjoy an occasional glass of wine, takeaway, chocolate and ice cream, but I don’t pine for food or think about it apart from when I’m hungry (or shopping for it). My social life doesn’t particularly involve food or drink and family life doesn’t revolve around it. I’ve got plenty of friends for whom food is a “thing” and I can’t relate to that at all.
HarrietHairbrush · 06/07/2021 21:02

You can’t out exercise a bad diet
Slim people say no thanks
Don’t mindlessly pick at crisps or anything
If they eat chocolate they don’t eat a family sized bar
In my experience of them
I have been slimmer but now bmi is 28 from
29 earlier this summer
Am working on more protein and very little
Carbs

roarfeckingroarr · 06/07/2021 21:02

My BMI is around 19. I eat whatever I want. I don't have an emotional attachment to food and I don't eat my feelings.

LadyJaye · 06/07/2021 21:03

BMI around 21... been roughly the same weight since I was about 22 (now 42).

Vegetarian, don't have a sweet tooth at all, very keen cook so mostly eat fresh rather than processed food, but I think the two key elements are that a) I only eat when I'm hungry (so that might only be once a day) and b) although I like food and like going out for dinner etc, on a day to day basis, I very much see food as fuel and have no emotional relationship with it.

Cosybelles · 06/07/2021 21:04

When I was very thin, BMI 19, I would eat one meal per day, in the evening, and perhaps a bit of bread at lunch time. This was horrendous. I was listless and my hair was falling out.

Now I'm a bit bigger, BMI 20. I eat three healthy but small meals per day, and a few snacks too - maybe a couple of biscuits, an ice cream, have a bit of a sweet tooth. Try to drink only two nights per week.

Pepsi9090 · 06/07/2021 21:05

BMI of 18.5, I calorie count but eat whatever the hell I want within my calorie limit.

Some days it's healthy veg meals, other days it'll be bars of dairy milk and poptarts

Cotswoldmama · 06/07/2021 21:06

I'm very slim and always have been. I don't really pay attention to what I eat but I watched a TV program a while ago about why skinny People are skinny and realised I had a lot in common with those people. I rarely eat breakfast as I'm just not hungry then but I would eat maybe a cake at 10 am! So there's quite a lot of time not eating. At lunch I'd probably eat a sandwich a bag of crisps and some fruit. I'd have a chocolate bar mid afternoon a fairly healthy dinner usually like a stir-fry of pasta or sometimes something not particularly healthy like pizza and nearly always pudding and sometimes late night snacks of crisps or chocolate. I think my portion sizes aren't that big but I don't often eat very healthily. I rarely drink alcohol and rarely eat meat. I have started exercising during lockdown but I haven't gained or list any weight I'm just trying to get fitter. I've weighed the same amount since I was 18 other than when I've been pregnant and I'm 37 now. I think genetics has some input both my parents are slim and I work on my feet as well. I don't like driving so walk quite a lot.

Cosybelles · 06/07/2021 21:07

If I crave a food I just have it. But a reasonable amount of it. I miss drinking every night like at the start of the pandemic but it was so bad for my health I had to make myself stop.

LolaSmiles · 06/07/2021 21:08

That's my experience too. I eat what I want to, which tends to be healthy, nutritious meals, but don't have an emotional relationship with food. If I want second helpings then I'll have seconds, but if I'm not very hungry then I'll eat half my meal and box the rest for another meal.
If I want a biscuit with coffee or a pudding then I will, and it's all in moderation. There's no ooh I'll have a bit of a treat... going to be a bit naughty... I shouldn't have, but go on... I've earned this chocolate/pudding/take away.

nomorespaghetti · 06/07/2021 21:09

I have a BMI of 20. For breakfast I have porridge with semi skimmed milk and a bit of fruit. For lunch I have poached eggs, avocado and sweet chilli sauce on sourdough bread. We don’t eat meat at home (do eat fish), dinner would be something like veggie or fish risotto, pasta, biriyani, stew.

I don’t really shack, maybe some fruit. I have something in the evening like a chocolate bar, bit of cake, or popcorn. Only drink at the weekends (usually half a bottle of wine fri and sat nights). Have a takeaway on a sat night, and maybe a lunch out on Sunday.

Susannahmoody · 06/07/2021 21:09

The key is not having an emotional attachment and avoiding foods containing white flour and sugar.

If you avoid white flour you basically avoid all the junk.

WingBingo · 06/07/2021 21:10

I don’t crave food as such.

I make my two meals as satisfying as possible. This does the job most of the time but there are exceptions every now and then.

I always say no to food offered to me, like cake, for example. Unless it it would offend, then I take it away and give it to my DC!

nomorespaghetti · 06/07/2021 21:11

Oh, I forgot. I walk and run a lot. Run 3-4x a week (5-10k). I do the school run on foot and it’s a really long way!

LadyJaye · 06/07/2021 21:11

Also, I don't watch my weight per se (I put a couple of kilos on over lockdown because I wasn't moving to the same extent - literally stuck in the house like everybody else - but I've dropped them now that I'm walking more again).

If my clothes are getting a bit tight, I'll try to increase my movement a bit (I like the gym, particularly heavy lifting, but I know it's not for everybody).

I wouldn't say I had a very particular diet or exercise regime, though. I'm aware of my diet and try to move around enough to stay healthy and flexible, especially as I'm in my early 40s now, but I do think quite a lot of it is down to genetics. I am physically very similar to my father, who was tall and lean, with long limbs, whereas my sister, who struggles to maintain her weight, is much more like my small, apple-shaped mother.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/07/2021 21:12

Bmi 21
I'm very tall so I burn a lot of calories
I am very very active with 100 active minutes on 3/7 days and have personal training on one of those days
I fast on 5:2 and eat within my TDEE on other days
I eat cake and biscuits but in moderation and generally eat at least 5 veg a day if not closer to 10

Michellexxx · 06/07/2021 21:12

I don’t tend to eat very much. Like pp, I don’t have breakfast and sometimes don’t realise I haven’t eaten properly until about 2pm.
I usually have soup/salad at lunch, maybe crisps. Dinner is a family meal, but I make sure my portion is reasonable. I do have a night time snack, but usually a Kit Kat or something small.
I do notice what I’m eating- so if I have a latte and a croissant then I’ll compensate later. If I have a big lunch, I am usually quite full so have a small dinner.
I definitely don’t eat if I’m stressed/anxious- usually the opposite.

Clickbait · 06/07/2021 21:13

My DH has a BMI of around 19. He genuinely eats whatever he likes, but having said that, he doesn't eat a lot. He's just not that interested in food and can easily forget to have a meal or leave food on his plate. I'm the opposite! It's so annoying!
