How much would you pay for a week in a caravan?

We really love caravan breaks, dc love all the onsite facilities etc. I usually book cheapies in term time.
Now eldest dc is of school age I was having a look for a week next August, the prices are eye watering!
Does anyone happily pay 800+ for a week? Does it feel good value or do you end up wishing you'd gone abroad?

I never normally pay much. Normally do a last minute weekend some time in the summer and it’s never usually more than £150. When the kids were small we used to go in term time for about £120 for the week in September.

I’ve just booked what I think is the last reasonable caravan in Cornwall for 4 night in the next couple of weeks for £284. It’s more than I would normally pay, but some of the bigger sites wanted over a £1k for the same dates!! We usually go abroad every year, in the summer hols and never pay more than £1500. There no way I’d spend that on a U.K. caravan!!

idontlikealdi · 06/07/2021 20:20

This year have paid 2k for two weeks in Dorset, I think that's pretty standard for school holidays, higher spec van, nice sites.

I got quotes 6k for two weeks in Cornwall, not a fucking chance!

thenewduchessofhastings · 06/07/2021 20:21

£800 for a week in a caravan during high season is about right

LST · 06/07/2021 20:23

@Ifailed

I'd expect to be paid to spend a week in a caravan.
What a really twaty comment

But a family hotel room is minimum 120 a night anywhere in the summer. I dont think it's that bad, esp if there is something to do.

LST · 06/07/2021 20:29

@Patapouf what's the point of that comment though? What a shitty attitude some people have.

shinynewapple21 · 06/07/2021 20:31

If you've not had to holiday during school holidays before @Gardenwalldilema it's likely that prices you are seeing for this year are higher than previous years due to people not having been able to book abroad . I think £800 sounds reasonable compared to other prices I've seen for this August .

Most ridiculous I've seen was a tent in a field somewhere in Wales on AirB&B for £1500.

It would be nice to think prices will come back down again in a couple of years as demand goes down again but I wouldn't bank on it .'

shinynewapple21 · 06/07/2021 20:36

@Waxonwaxoff0

Wow. I wouldn't pay that. I pay £200-£300 for a Butlins break with entertainment and food included!

@Waxonwaxoff0 is that during the school holidays this year ?
If it is you've got a good deal as we used to pay more than that a few years back .

ThatsNotMyReindeer · 06/07/2021 20:38

We paid about £275 sept 2020 (Mon-Fri outside school holidays) for a 4 berth platinum caravan in Looe. Clean, modern and exactly what we wanted - self contained, self catering. Indoor pool on site, play park, beaches nearby

We've rebooked for sept this year with the same company at a different location also in Cornwall, same time of year, also Mon-Fri, platinum plus this time for the private decking - about £300 i think.

April 2022 we've booked a lodge (which I think is effectively a large caravan/static home thing without wheels?!), the highest spec one, private hot tub, decking etc. Again Mon-Fri outside of school holidays, about £500 in Tenby

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/07/2021 20:41

@shinynewapple21 yes, there are only 2 of us though (me single parent and DS) so we just get a room rather than an apartment, I know they tend to cost more.

upsideoxide · 06/07/2021 20:49

I'd pay not to spend a week in one

Lovemusic33 · 06/07/2021 20:52

We usually pay around £500 but this year we have paid around £700, prices have shot up due to demand.

🙄

I prefer a tent tbh

Agree...no need to make nasty comments

Well keep walking by and don’t be snide
LST · 06/07/2021 21:11

@Patapouf so why comment on a thread about caravans?

Figgygal · 06/07/2021 21:12

I can’t bring myself to pay what they cost these days
We’ve had a lodge on a lovely park in Devon a few times £500 for 4 nights in past near beach, kids loved the facilities but they’re £1600 a week in holidays I can’t do it
We’ve booked AI in turkey next year for £1700
We have 5 nights in a sea front air bnb apartment (3rd year running so owner lets us book offline and discounts for us) for £400 this august 2 minute walk to the beach and have to make own entertainment in the evenings but can do that considering save so much

confusedofengland · 06/07/2021 21:15

We never go in summer because prices are extortionate. We go camping on non-electric pitches instead, roughly £30 per night.

We went away to the Peak District (near Ashbourne) in May half-term & paid £268 for 4 nights in a brand new static caravan, 3 beds, bathroom & extra WC, on an independent site.

We also go to Berny Riviere (La Croix de Vieux Pont) every October half-term. Massive campsite with pool complex, bowling, soft play, crazy golf, fishing, free kids' clubs & so much more. We stay in a 3-bedroom, 2 bathroom static caravan with decking & loads of indoor space. Costs £425 for the 7 nights, including ferry crossing (Eurocamp).

banjaxxed · 06/07/2021 21:32

Sounds a pretty standard price

How much would you pay for a 'lodge' at Center parcs, 2, 3 times as much and that's essentially no different to a static caravan.

We went to Cornwall last year, a good 20 min walk to the beach in an apartment and it was £1200.

Went to haven at Easter 7 years ago and it was £300 for the weekend . In school holidays on a site with a pool etc etc, I would think £1K per week was a decent deal to be honest.

Gardenwalldilema · 06/07/2021 21:49

Thanks for the replies, it's just a school holiday premium and something I have to love with for the next 15 years or so clearly Sad
I can now see why there are often threads suggesting the staggering of school holidays, and pondering the suitability of pulling dc out of school for a holiday!

I love all these snooty comments. I wonder if they are the same people who dispair at second home ownership and landlords ruining the market.

Holiday caravans, apartments etc are a much more sustainable and friendly model than a "cheap" detached multi bedroom rental.

Patapouf · 06/07/2021 22:02
@Patapouf so why comment on a thread about caravans?
Why derail a thread to pick fights? Nothing better to do with your time?

I was just agreeing with a PP who was actually answering the OP truthfully.

We did it for the first time a couple of years ago and, despite reservations, really enjoyed it. We have booked again this year (it’s about £1000 cheaper than a holiday home in the same area) as it is near my parents. We are paying £700 for 7 nights. We did balk at the price but actually I think it is pretty good
