That’s it for us. Everything was normal Thursday morning. It all started to go pear shaped Thursday afternoon. Friday the school was half closed. We were told earlier today that after a sudden flood of confirmed covid cases, the school is now closing fully. We won’t be reopening until September

OP posts:

@Hercisback same ‘advice’ to us.

ChocolateRiver · 03/07/2021 22:50

I wish my school would. We had nearly a third of the school off last week with more confirmed cases all the time. Plus loads of staff isolating too. Can’t do another 2 weeks like last week. It’s just like it was before Christmas. Maybe even worse.

Silverparting · 03/07/2021 22:50

My one child's secondary closed early at Christmas. It was the right decision, I feel.

Rampant again, with kids sent home daily, so I kind of hope it would close early.

OP, that’s interesting to know that PHE look at how many are reporting twice weekly testing, didn’t know that.

Me neither. Is that reporting to the NHS it to the school? Cos we've got loads who are reporting to the school because that's quick and easy but not bothering to report negatives to the NHS because that's more of a faff (me included)

I think that people who complain at missed sports day or after school clubs need to read some of the previous posts. There are good reasons why schools are trying to do all they can to prevent the spread of the virus. Schools are working very hard to keep lessons in school going as long as they possibly can. That is the number 1 priority. yes, it is disappointing that all of the other fun stuff can't happen right now, but keeping classrooms as safe as possible is the most importnat thing.

Do some parent know how small classrooms are. It is impossible to keep children and staff at anything like a safe distance apart. Many schools have windows that barely open - either for health and safety reasons if they are above ground floor level, or because the buildings are so old and poorly maintained that the windows and stuck tight.

I am really fed up of reading contributions about how there are 'no cases' or 'just a handful' of cases in my child's school , so it's really unfait they didn't get a prom/ cooking club/ sports day. No one likes missing out on fun things. No one. That 'handful of cases' could well be into double figure in a couple of days.

Poor kids. Currently my daughter's year have over two thirds of them in isolation. She's still there but she says the head of year comes round every morning and removes more of them. I've had a letter every day, for the last two weeks, informing me of cases in other year groups. It's a large school and they're dropping like flies. Just had my 11 year old off primary too, due to go back on Monday. They've missed so much, it's sickening.

gillysSong · 03/07/2021 22:57

My dd school closed. 10 teachers down and lots of kids isolating.
Excellent online though and she's y12 so able to motivate herself.
Awful for so many though.
We are NW can't say where though.

Serious question - why are people "shocked" about this?

Out of character for PHE to act so cautiously.

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/07/2021 22:59

Our school isn’t far from this - West Yorks.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 03/07/2021 23:00

It's spreading fast down here SW. we have a wedding on 18.07 in NE.

Not sure what to do with my DS who is in Y7. Feel like keeping him off from 8th July in case he has to isolate from then. This wedding is the only thing we've had to look forward to in so long. And we've not seen any of my family since Christmas 2019.
He's already had to isolate once this term and his school currently has 3 year groups out (huge school)

GenericUsername404 · 03/07/2021 23:00

Bloody hell I didn’t realise it was so bad in some places. None of the primaries in my town have had any cases, the secondary had a couple of cases last week but it turned out the kids were getting false positives by putting the latflo tests in citric acid or something similar. They’re all back now too.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 03/07/2021 23:01

Are people shocked that its spreading or that children are still being locked in their homes to protect the NHS?

Bagamoyo1 · 03/07/2021 23:02

Kids and education getting thrown under the bus again. I’m not sure who they’re being sacrificed for this time though, as the at-risk people have been vaccinated and will soon be enjoying the lifting of all restrictions. Vaccinated adults are jetting off to green countries and going to football matches, whilst school children are being treated as if we’re back in December.

iamtopazmortmain · 03/07/2021 23:02

Who is locking their child inside their home?

MarshaBradyo · 03/07/2021 23:02

Thursday morning normal to Friday closed for so long is fast - especially waiting for tests to come back

PHE just did a full school test PCR and it took days to get through

The latter . For me anyway.
Bagamoyo1 · 03/07/2021 23:03

@iamtopazmortmain

Who is locking their child inside their home?
Every child who is having to isolate
Pieceofpurplesky · 03/07/2021 23:03

I had 2 in class the other day (and supposedly 28 online of which none showed up).

We have 5 teachers off - not sure how much more we can survive! Our head has told us to turn track and trace off!

Process seems different and length of time harsh on students
BiscuitsNoMore · 03/07/2021 23:04

Dsc school is closed to all year groups except one. It's a primary so year R to 6. Only year 3 open.

catchingzzzeds · 03/07/2021 23:05

DS, year 4, is on his 3rd 10 day isolation. We had an email yesterday to say there is one class left in school, that means 170 out of 200 pupils isolating. There are multiple positive cases in each class including teaching staff.

DS, year 10, is also home until the 12th. His school have had approx 30 cases in the last few days.
I want them to close now and online school until September, it's a nightmare for me and work but the in and out is worse.

Howshouldibehave · 03/07/2021 23:05

Our head has told us to turn track and trace off!

Ours has, too!

Hax · 03/07/2021 23:06

DS is a teacher. Only Y 9 left in school Y11 and 13 have left but all the rest, plus many staff all off. The staff off are from social contacts not work as it doesn't seem to count if you've been in a room teaching Y8s who test positive.
