Why do some children wear socks in the garden?

So many kids, running around outside in their socks Confused.

I don’t understand! Either it’s cold/muddy and you need shoes… or it’s warm enough to go barefoot.

I think it’s really yucky to get socks so stained and grotty when you could just wash their little feet clean in the bath that night. Why is this?

Welsh o think my posts are coming across the wrong way

You are getting stressed because your lazy brats won't do blah and your precious carpets are getting dirty.

I've seen so many parents get really upset about marks on walls, dirt on carpets, etc.
Why not turn it on its head, why not think.. I have small children, they make mess they need to play, we need to nurture them so decorate not with us adults in mind but them?

They have more freedom and we adults relax and have something to look forward to caring about when they move out?

Sorry but you’re being ridiculous. I am perfectly happy to accept I have children therefore will never have a pristine home - in fact it’s far from it but walking outside dirt through the house isn’t ok.

And you don’t actually know I have ‘small children’ . It’s not cute little toddlers who just don’t want to stop their adorable game of knights and dragons. It’s older children who just can’t be bothered and know they wouldn’t be allowed in the house with shoes on. Sorry to burst your bubble Mary Poppins.

Because they:

  • 'are only out for a bit'
  • 'don't want cold feet'
  • 'don't want the spiders to crawl on them'

Insert any other random excuse my DC make up for being lazy.

Welsh, I'm sorry but unless they've moved out I don't see what age has to do with it.

I've never understood the new devotion to floors. But floors that work for you and your family.

Lemonmelonsun · 03/07/2021 22:15

Blow... Why should they have to make up excuses at all??

Unless you literally live on a farm what the hell is in these gardens that's so offensive??

Unfortunately I don't have French doors but I'd love to see dc running free in and out playing.

Is dirt acceptable on sofas and beds? Because that’s where it ends up if it’s on socks.

I presume they take them off and put them in the laundry basket when they come in, or their mum or dad does. That's what I have done when I have put the bins out wearing only socks on my feet, late at night. Then they can be instructed to put on some suitable footwear, with or without fresh socks.

It's not that much of a big deal but I remember being barefoot out in the country, all lovely and natural, and something sharp going in to my foot between two toes, which I cleaned thoroughly and to which I applied antiseptic on reaching home, again the next morning after showering. It became infected and I had to have antibiotics. Of course it cleared up quickly but I've been wary of being 'barefoot in the park' ever since.

DS is terrified that a worm will pop out the ground and get tangled in his toes. He's 5.

AfternoonToffee · 03/07/2021 22:51

Because the battle is over wearing something on his top half or something on his bottom half. Socks aren't even on my radar.

FaceyRomford · 03/07/2021 23:12

Socks are easier to wash than feet. And can be binned if too grotty?

rantymcrantface66 · 03/07/2021 23:14

Sensory issues, cold feet. I have both myself so can sympathise massively even though it annoys me when the socks are white. I mostly buy black and grey now for this reason

MilduraS · 03/07/2021 23:19

I wear socks roaming around the garden sometimes. I don't like the idea of squishing bugs with my bare feet but equally I can't be bothered to put shoes on for 5 minutes.

Sceptre86 · 04/07/2021 08:44

They need socks for the trampoline and then can't be bothered to get their shoes on? That is why mine do it.

Lokdok · 04/07/2021 09:11

What do you mean it’s positively encouraged all across London!? Grin I’ve never seen this. My son has occasionally tried to go out on his bike in socks only and when
I catch him I make him put shoes on. Really don’t think this is a ‘thing’.
