Why do some children wear socks in the garden?

So many kids, running around outside in their socks Confused.

I don’t understand! Either it’s cold/muddy and you need shoes… or it’s warm enough to go barefoot.

I think it’s really yucky to get socks so stained and grotty when you could just wash their little feet clean in the bath that night. Why is this?

I'm not buttoned up enough to go ballistic about socks.
Life's too short to worry about what other people's children (or my own) wear in their own garden.

MistyFrequencies · 03/07/2021 20:20

My kids often run around the garden in their socks, I never even gave it a thought. The socks get dirty, I wash them, same as all their other clothes. I'm shocked worrying about this is even a 'thing'.....and no I don't sit around watching TV in my PJs but 100% would if I could find the time 😂

@burritofan

Because I don’t really care? I’ve got a washing machine and shit-loads of socks ¯\\(ツ)

Literally this.

@KittyWithStripes

But their parents positively encourage it! All across London. Drives me mad.

My mum would’ve gone ballistic if I’d run around in the lawn in my socks.

I don’t! I’m constantly telling DC “shoes on or bare feet”. Do they listen…
paniniswapx3 · 03/07/2021 20:25

@drspouse

Because I tell them to go back inside and put on their shoes when I spot them but a) I'm not quick enough and b) they don't listen.
Mine too!
RightOnTheEdge · 03/07/2021 20:29

I am always shouting at my kids for this. They don't take a bit of notice!

I just asked my ds "WHY??"
He said “because sometimes I just can't be bothered to put shoes on“

Tangledtresses · 03/07/2021 20:32

I have vague memories of my mum saying you'll get RINGWORM in bare feet.... London 70's

I let my kids wear socks outside 🤷🏼‍♀️😂😂

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 03/07/2021 20:35

Is that really true? Crikey.

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 03/07/2021 20:36

I absolutley hate this . Mine all have sliders or flip flops for outside . They know the rules lol .

HelenaJustina · 03/07/2021 21:25

@CertieCumboyle always in the newest whitest pair!

HumpHumpWhale · 03/07/2021 21:29

My son does that and it drives me insane. Why?????? But he won't be told. DD doesn't wear her socks outside, but she does take off only one sock inside and abandon it in weird places. Again, why???? Kids are weird.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 03/07/2021 21:33

Oh my, one of my ds insisted on sleeping in one sock for a few weeks. He wouldn't go to sleep without it, and always the same one. Confused

BiscuitsNoMore · 03/07/2021 21:36

Because my dd won't go barefoot as the tiniest scrape ona toe is mega drama. And she can't be arsed to take shoes off for trampoline.
She has black socks she wears soley for the garden. If on the odd occasion she wears her white ones out they get binned as they would never come up good again.
She also baths after so it's not that I don't want to wash her feet.

Welshflowerpower · 03/07/2021 21:38

This drives me FUCKING MENTAL!!!!!

We are a shoes off family but my children insist on running in and out the house in their socks then just walking about inside so might as well wear shoes inside.

Today my daughter took a brand new pair of socks out the packet then ten minutes later went outside in them Angry

Lemonmelonsun · 03/07/2021 21:40

I'd much rather mine were in socks or shoes.

We have hedgehog pop, badger god knows what else.. Spikes as well from various things... I'm really have never spent a second caring about socks or stained socks!!

Lemonmelonsun · 03/07/2021 21:43

Welsh, maybe you should follow the it lead?

In our house I really don't care what they run in and out in but I'd prefer it was shoes.. If they are mid game imagination flowing.. However does that work having to worry about carpets and shoes??

Sometimes I really think whilst dc ate young why not have house materials that work for children and fun and games not agaisnt them? Have the cream carpets and floors that can't be trodden on when they are older??

Welshflowerpower · 03/07/2021 21:44

I don’t think there’s anything at all wrong with not wanting dirt on my carpets Hmm

Lemonmelonsun · 03/07/2021 21:44

Biscuits out of interest, why would white sock get binned? Surley the dirt would be on the sole of the foot??

Lemonmelonsun · 03/07/2021 21:46

Yes but your dc Welsh want "flow".. Equally why shouldn't they be allowed flow?

Welshflowerpower · 03/07/2021 21:47

You don’t even know what age my children are. What nonsense.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 03/07/2021 21:47

@drspouse

Because I tell them to go back inside and put on their shoes when I spot them but a) I'm not quick enough and b) they don't listen.

SpornStar · 03/07/2021 21:48

In our case it’s because the trampoline is at the far end of a large garden and she can’t be arsed to put shoes on to run in for drink/loo/to tell me to come and watch the new move she’s just invented. Of all the annoying shit she does, I can’t get excited about dirty socks.

Lemonmelonsun · 03/07/2021 21:49

Well does it matter?

They want to run in and out without hindrance.

When they are gone why not worry about carpet then?

Welshflowerpower · 03/07/2021 21:52

I’m within my rights to not want mud and dirt on my carpet whether it’s cream, blue or orange.

It’s pure laziness not not wanting their flow interrupted what utter nonsense.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 03/07/2021 21:53

I'm really interested in how the OP has observed so many children in their own gardens all across London. I suspect I will never know. I NEED to know - come on OP! Put me out of my misery. 😬😤😆😤😬
