It’s always been marks and Waitrose.

Can’t stretch to it now!

In your view, cheapest but also good quality supermarket?

Thanks

Aldi or Lidl. Personally I prefer Aldi but Lidl has a great app where you get money off and a ,£10 voucher if you spend £200 in a month

Scaredycat87 · 01/07/2021 17:26

Oh I meant to say - neither of them! Not close
Sainsbury’s
Morrison’s
Tesco
Asda

Are the options

Out of the ones you've said, I like Sainsbury's best but I find it very expensive. I've never been to Morrisons. I find Tesco and Asda fairly similar

Username7521 · 01/07/2021 17:28

We swapped to Tesco and I’ve been happy.

Caramellatteplease · 01/07/2021 17:29

Morrison best quality for money
Aldi best value for money
Tesco is cheap and still does delivery

Scaredycat87 · 01/07/2021 17:29

We eat fruit and veg like going out of fashion

So fresh quality is a priority in trying to find the balance with value

Aldi is incredibly straightforward. The price is always on the shelf, and correct and you can keep track of exactly what you’re spending.

Lidl can be very confusing with different offers on different days and a lot of expensive name brands among their own cheaper stuff.

Scaredycat87 · 01/07/2021 17:30

Very little meat
No alcohol

I'd say use the sainsburys app, and the saver delivery slots (£1), so you aren't tempted by random purchases. Sainsburys have a 'price match to aldi' range... Start your shopping with that and then see what else you need to add

Scaredycat87 · 01/07/2021 17:31

Wish i had clarified in title

lidl and aldi are NOT options

Honestly - for fresh fruit and veg that will last beyond a day or so- local market! (Not supermarkets)

Sparklingbrook · 01/07/2021 17:37

I would go with one that does Scan as You Shop (here it's Asda and Tesco)
That way you can keep track of your spending as you go around.

Indigopearl · 01/07/2021 17:37

Out of those listed I would say tesco is best for quality and price of fruit and veg providing you select it yourself and don't get it delivered.

Sparklingbrook · 01/07/2021 17:41

If you use Tesco make sure you have a Clubcard as some of the lower prices are only for Clubcard holders.

PieonaBarm · 01/07/2021 17:43

Tesco's or Morrison's for fruit and veg. I generally go to Tesco's as Morrison's is twenty minutes away. I keep all my veg in the fridge and honestly it keeps for weeks. Also get the finest baking potato's (any finest potato tbh) they're fabulous and will feel a bit like luxury if you're used to M&S.

Also get a Clubcard, like it or not the Clubcard price offers can save you £6 on some shops!

Ninkanink · 01/07/2021 17:45

Morrison’s, by a long shot. Much better quality than Tesco. Much cheaper than Sainsbury’s. I don’t rate ASDA at all for value/quality/range of goods.

Scaredycat87 · 01/07/2021 17:50

Thanks so much
Quite excited about trying Morrison’s and actually bothering to write a list…. And stick to it!

@Bananapuppy

I’ve got grapes in my fridge from 2 weeks ago from Aldi, that are still fine.

We shop on a Saturday, I buy loads of fruit and veg (fruit this week was melon, pineapple, kiwi, easy peelers, apples, bananas, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, lychee and an avocado). The avocado is just about ripe today and starting to squish, everything else is perfect.

Ditto babycorn, green beans, Mangetout, courgette, broccoli, carrots, cauli (only half left) peppers, red & white onions, butternut squash, new, red and baking potatoes.

All the salad stuff is running out now, but it’s still fresh. (Cos/ Romaine lettuce, radish, cucumber, vine tomatoes, baby spinach, celery, spring onion, baby peppers, baby cucumber).

To buy all that at Morrison’s / Asda / Tesco or Sainsbury’s is ridiculously expensive. I know you said no Aldi, but if you want lots of fresh fruit / veg, then like us it’s worth travelling.

You do need to be careful of dates or make sure you take from the back or underneath, we easily get a week out of everything, most things two weeks and even longer in the winter.

Marmite27 · 01/07/2021 17:54

I used to work at Morrison’s. I’d never buy fresh stuff from there, particularly counter stuff.

I’m sure there are questionable practices in all supermarkets, but I’ve not seen them with my own eyes, so I can pretend it doesn’t Wink

Backhills · 01/07/2021 17:55

I'm a LIdl fan and I think most of their own brand stuff is far superior to other supermarkets own brands, although they do have a few misses.

TBH, outside of Waitrose and M&S I don't think swapping supermarket is going to save you a fortune. The biggest savings to be made on the weekly shop are by changing what you actually buy. For example, I now do all my cleaning with bleach, washing up liquid or white vinegar. The savings v fancy specialist products for each job are huge.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 01/07/2021 17:56

If you have time Aldi or Lidl, then your supermarket of choice for anything you really prefer from there.

I used to do lots from Lidl then pop to Waitrose for 1 or 2 extras. Now I am lazy and do a big Tesco shop (clubcard scheme is good) and do a small weekly shop at Waitrose for convenience as its local- you have to be v disciplined in Waitrose, ignore the temptation!

I’m happy to shop at ALDI and to a lesser extent LIDL and we do a big shop every month or so from either of those, but I can walk to Morrison’s so that’s generally where I do most of my walk-in shopping. It’s my go-to for things I can’t get from ALDI.

GrandmasCat · 01/07/2021 18:04

ALDI, it takes a little while to get used to only get seasonal vets/stuff but I guess that with Brexit this becoming the norm in most supermarkets.

I use Iceland a lot for frozen uncooked vegs and meats. It is cheaper this way because it reduces my trips to the supermarket massively and nothing goes to waste.

I go to Sainsbury and Tesco just in a blue moon to get those things that I can get in the others.

But the big secret of supermarket savings is to plan menus, you can have such a healthy diet for almost no money if you just buy what you know you need.

Muchmorethan · 01/07/2021 18:07

I meal plan for the following week and shop accordingly. I have always used Tesco and l use the Clubcard points for days out.

I have delivery saver as that is far more convenient for me and stops me buying random stuff
