Would it be weird to give grieving DD some cash to celebrate with his girlfriend?

We lost DH after a long and difficult illness early this morning.

20yo DS1's girlfriend has an important practical test piece for her college course today, so he hasn't told her yet because he didn't want to disrupt her exam.

He's just heard she got the highest score in her cohort. It is adorable how proud he is.

He could afford to treat her himself, but I'm feeling inclined to give him/them some cash to celebrate with, I suppose as a kind of blessing to say it's OK to be happy, but also because I'm genuinely pleased for her.

Is this weird the day he lost his dad?

So sorry for your loss.

It sounds like a wonderful idea.

SummerHouse · 30/06/2021 18:44

I think it's a beautiful idea. If I was your DH, I would be as insanely proud of you as your DS is of his girlfriend.

In fact you all sound like utterly lovely people. Life's so very unfair sometimes. You shouldn't have to cope with this so admirably but you clearly are. Flowers

My best friend took me the pub the night my mum died. I had been grieving for months while she was still alive and it was better than staring at the walls at home. I also went back to work on the Monday- she died on the Friday - and that helped too. You sound lovely and do what feels right for you x

There is no right or wrong.

The day my DSIS passed away, I went out for a meal with DH. I really couldn't face sitting in the house being miserable. Yes, I was outside the house being miserable, but it helped me to see that life was still going on as normal.

Woolite99 · 30/06/2021 19:04

I'm also so sorry for your loss

NoSquirrels · 30/06/2021 19:06

Oh backhills, I’m so sorry for your loss. I was on your recent thread. Flowers

Joy and happiness and life’s celebrations keep on even in the midst of the pain. I think it’s a lovely gesture.

Take care of yourself.

Backhills · 30/06/2021 19:21

Ok, so I said to DS1 that if there's something nice they'd like to do to celebrate I'll treat them and he muttered something about a trip to Dubai! I'm safe, they can't do that in the current climate, right? Grin

As it happens DS2 has said he's going to meet up with a friend for a chat at the weekend. Ds2 who does all his socialising online and barely leaves the house except for work and college, so it's great that he's recognised this need in himself. I'll tell him that if there's something they'd like to do while they're out, I'll treat them to that too.

It's wonderful that you and your DS have the generosity to be happy for his girlfriend today. If he's able to go out and have a little fun then good for him and it's not weird at all.

LowlandLucky · 30/06/2021 19:29

Sorry for your loss. That would be such a lovely thing to do for your Son and his girlfriend.Flowers

You're all doing incredibly well. I have great empathy as almost ten years ago this was my and my young daughters, having nursed DH to his last moments.

A lot of the grieving has happened for you all. It's one of the small mercies of a long expected death. And in some ways, that most other people won't understand, a good death can be uplifting.

Your DH would be pleased to know how you and your lads are dealing with today. I'll be thinking of you all this evening.

Aw, I've woken up this morning to find a card and flowers from the girlfriend's parents, who I've never met, on the kitchen table. And DS1 had thought to put them in water Grin
