School sports day just been canceled, but football fans are ok!

So angry at the moment!

Had an email from dc school to say that the socially distanced sports day has now been cancelled due to rising COVID infections.
Yet I see on tv and newspapers, thousands of people together celebrating football. A lot of them drunk and observing zero social distancing.

All I wanted to do was stand on my own on the school field and watch my dc struggle to balance an egg on a spoon with their peers. A bit of normality and fun.

Angry

That’s your school’s decision though.

theSliceOfPie · 30/06/2021 07:31

It's not just our school, many others also.

It's not just our school, many others also.
But reading threads on here many schools are going ahead with Sports Day it's not a blanket decision that they can't.
theSliceOfPie · 30/06/2021 07:51

@Sparklingbrook ok, so I'm happy for those that do get a sports day this year. Sadly not everyone will though.

Some will, some won't. It has nothing to do with football fans and everything to do with what the school decide.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 30/06/2021 07:57

There was a DFE blog about this last week. What they said was that schools could hold sports day but needed to ensure the rules around outdoor gatherings were upheld, so groups of no more that 30 people gathering.

If the school can facilitate it, for example, so that parents are separated into class groups, 1 parent per child and that the groups don't mix then they could allow parents to attend sports day.

I think understandably, given everything they're already dealing with, trying to coordinate that kind of event is a big expectation on schools at the moment, so I understand why many schools are choosing to not allow parental attendance.

Bryonyshcmyony · 30/06/2021 07:59

I was delighted not to have to go to sports day (it happened but with no parents) and would rather have been able to watch last night's match, which meant more to a huge swathe of the population than my kid coming 4th in a badly organised race.

cupsofcoffee · 30/06/2021 08:01

The fact that it's not going ahead has nothing to do with the football though. We've had sporting events running as normal here for weeks now.

Bryonyshcmyony · 30/06/2021 08:02

Yes my kids have been back to their sport for weeks now.

purplemunkey · 30/06/2021 08:07

Our one went ahead but without parents. Kids all seemed to have fun. DC is in Y1 so I haven’t actually been to one yet - there wasn’t one at all last year.

I know what you mean but I don’t think the two things are linked really. Things are gradually getting there.

Woeismethischristmas · 30/06/2021 08:07

My kids had sports day but no parents allowed. Classes coming out for their parts and then back in abit joyless but better than nothing

rookiemere · 30/06/2021 08:07

People can be so mean ! I'm sorry your DCs sports day was cancelled and yes it does suck when thousands of adults can gather to watch football. DCs are now the ones being disproportionately impacted by this and they better get the self isolation rules in a better place for next term or that will be the third school year screwed up by Covid.

Marcanana · 30/06/2021 08:08

Your school has made a responsible decision, the footballs fans have not.

Hmm
ineedaholidaynow · 30/06/2021 09:20

I’m assuming a lot will depend on space and layout of school grounds, number of pupils, rates of cases in the area, whether schools allow parents on the school site for sports day etc

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 30/06/2021 09:24

People going to the football have to adhere to test event rules to be allowed entry. You have to show a negative LFT taken within 48 hours, that you have been double jabbed at least 14 days before the event or that you had COVID with a positive PCR up to 180 days before.

Anyone going to these large events are holding themselves out to be a guinea pig for research into how large scale public events can be conducted safely going forward. There is a risk in going and being in such close proximity. It is entirely separate from school sports day.

I am ignoring the fact that people are in pubs, beer gardens, fan parks etc because they are all supposed to be adhering to social distancing rules just like you would at sports day if it were going ahead as per the DfE guidance. If they haven’t complied that’s a matter for them and the people who choose to be there anyway.

flower11 · 30/06/2021 09:39

Down the road from me there is a pub with a marquee in the carpark. Must have been about 300 people crammed in their last night, all shouting, dancing and hugging. No social distancing what so ever.

The thing is football and beer sales make money for the government so that's ok.

Where as community events and sports day aren't allowed.

MarshaBradyo · 30/06/2021 09:40

That’s rotten op

Ours is going ahead tg but no parents

But Sports Days are allowed and it has been clarified that there are no covid rules that prohibit them. The schools take their own individual risk assessment and decisions on sports days.
BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 30/06/2021 09:46

Yep, it's shit.

The day of the Eng v Scot game dc1's in school transition for secondary was cancelled. She wasn't overly upset but did ask, when we were watching the news, why it was ok for fans without tickets to go to London & gather in crowds while she couldn't do that (they were meant to have done 2 x LFT's in the week leading up to the day & as much as possible was going to take place outside). It's the 1 rule for them, 1 rule for us that makes it so irritating.

Youdiditanyway · 30/06/2021 09:48

I’ve noticed most parents have stopped wearing masks since the school prevented us from watching sports day. I think it’s a rebellion of kinds because I’d say 90% complied when they first requested masks and it’s shot down to maybe 20% over the past fortnight, if not less. Lots of parents were furious, especially those with year 6 pupils. My DS is year 6 but he isn’t remotely sporty and dreads sports day, he usually comes last and this year was no exception. I’ve never really enjoyed watching sports days tbh, they drag on and 3/4 of the time your child isn’t even in the race you’re watching.

MadisonAvenue · 30/06/2021 09:52

it does suck when thousands of adults can gather to watch football.

And tennis, although the fact that people are being allowed into Wimbledon is being overlooked Hmm

HelloMissus · 30/06/2021 09:54

Sports days are allowed.
The school have decided to cancel. You shoplifting ask they why.

HelloMissus · 30/06/2021 09:54

*should ask why
