So angry at the moment!

Had an email from dc school to say that the socially distanced sports day has now been cancelled due to rising COVID infections.
Yet I see on tv and newspapers, thousands of people together celebrating football. A lot of them drunk and observing zero social distancing.

All I wanted to do was stand on my own on the school field and watch my dc struggle to balance an egg on a spoon with their peers. A bit of normality and fun.

Angry

So unfair 😡

Mintjulia · 30/06/2021 09:56

The head teacher is probably doing his best to keep his children in class until the end of term. Sorry but an egg and spoon race really isn't important in the wider context.

SorrySoldOut · 30/06/2021 09:58

Do the kids really care if parents are there to watch them though?

I can't imagine they will once they crack on with it. I bet much nicer for the teachers too!

At dc age yr 6 I don’t mind not going but younger I might want to see reception more

But hasn’t the op’s been cancelled completely not just no parents?

roguetomato · 30/06/2021 10:07

Since some school are doing it, you can't really compare that to football and complain, really. Your school decided not to, because of unique circumstances of their own.

SwanShaped · 30/06/2021 10:09

Ours is cancelled too. I’m so pissed off. It’s just feels mean.

SwanShaped · 30/06/2021 10:09

By cancelled I mean no parents allowed.

APurpleSquirrel · 30/06/2021 10:11

Ours is going ahead without parents. However it's not the schools decision, it's actually the LEA who hold the schools' insurance & are saying it's too risky.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/06/2021 10:15

I think children (at Primary) mind if their parents aren’t there but everyone else’s are. If no parents are there they will just get on with it.

OP has used sports day as an example because that's what's been cancelled at the school in question. We all know that in the grand scheme of things sports day isn't a big deal but most adults are now living pretty normal lives, while children are still being curtailed. They can be in class together Mon-Fri but can't have a full class party in a village hall, is another example (despite the fact that village halls are usually a damn side bigger than your average classroom & with much more ventilation).

This week the school my dc have confirmed the following are all cancelled:
Sports day
In person (outside) parents evenings
Teddy bears picnic for children starting Reception in September (outside)
Leavers assembly (outside)
Summer Fair (outside)
I understand that they don't want to risk suddenly having a spate of infections/burst bubbles at the very end of the year (we've had 0 since September) but the reality is the risk with all those events was low (as they'd asked for mask wearing from adults at all of them).

You will have to ask the school as to who and how they came to the decision to cancel. The events going ahead are being tracked by the government and PCR tests are submitted prior. They aren't the same and I say that as a parent whose child's sports day went ahead without parents and whose PGL was cancelled.

Ellmau · 30/06/2021 12:25

Suggest they replace it with a football match as that's obviously Covid-retardant ;)

Xiaoxiong · 30/06/2021 12:45

On the same day I got a text about our (outdoor) summer event at school being cancelled, I got an email about a large local horse show/fairground going ahead on the same day over the road, no PCRs or LFTs needed beforehand at all so not one of these "test events". In 2019 there were 55k spectators, so even if they're at massively reduced capacity that's still a lot more than our little tiny school.

I don't want the horse show cancelled - I just am so sick of the double standards and want our event to be able to go ahead too. It's not the school's fault, they are doing what they can but it feels so unfair.
