It's daughters year 6 prom soon. The girls normally wear nice dresses. But my daughter does not like dresses . She lives in leggings and tops. Anyone have any suggestions what I could get for her? She does not want anything to girly.

Absolutely don’t put an 11 year old in a tuxedo. If nothing else, it sends the message that if you don’t want to wear a pretty dress you must want to dress like a man. I very much doubt any of the boys will be wearing tuxedos!

A jumpsuit is just the ticket for this occasion and you can get them in long or short versions. Team with sandals or converse.

@LadyCatStark - I thought it was a formal event for Year 6's. I don't think it sends the message that if you don't want to wear a dress, wear men's clothes instead. I think it can still look very feminine on a girl and still be a trouser suit...but I guess we'll have to differ on that opinion.

She would hate a tuxedo. The jump suit seems a good idea. I will look on line with her /take her to a couple of shops.

Ours has been billed as "dress to impress" with the view that kids can interpret that how they want. In previous years some went for suits and full on prom dresses, others dressed casually. Leggings and a sparkly top would be absolutely fine. Or not even sparkly, just anything she's happy in.

I know its only year 6 but a girl at dd's year 11 prom wore a sparkly top, black, modern trousers and a jacket and looked fantastic.

Comefromaway · 30/06/2021 11:14

Dd herself wore a jumpsuit for the senior ball in college

SageRosemary · 30/06/2021 11:52

How about plain leggings, sparkly top in same colour and topped with a little tulle skirt?

Next have a wide variety of styles

@LookItsMeAgain I don’t like the last 2 but all of the Next ones are gorgeous 🥰 I think I like the first one best it looks really cool but still a child’s outfit if that makes sense!

Perhaps declare yourself against fast fashion and single use clothing and just don't take part in such nonsense.

There are people who are struggling financially and no school should be encouraging or enabling such expense.

People don't go and buy proper prom dresses. I think just something a bit different to what they would normally wear . It could just be something nice from primark for example. They can wear what they want though.
