My lovely sister-in-law is very seriously ill. She had bad pain yesterday, ended up in hospital, was moved to HDU and then today moved to intensive care. They suspected sepsis. Turns out she has a kidney stone causing a blockage, leading to infection and sepsis. She's in theatre now getting a stent to relieve the blockage.

I'm so worried about her, and my poor brother. Please, if you've got good stories about recovering from sepsis, can you share them? I am hundreds of miles away and wish I could be there to give my brother a big hug.

My uncle had urinary sepsis and recovered. And he’s in his 80s. I hope your SIL recovers well. Flowers

My Mum had sepsis after she developed an infection after an op and has made a full recovery.

DaisyDreaming · 28/06/2021 19:36

Lots of people make a full recovery once the antibiotics work their magic. I hope one day you can be posting to reassure people how your SIL came out the other side

I've had it twice. The first time, it was from an abscess in my jaw, that wasn't treated properly. Second time I got it was when I was in labour with my daughter.
The first time was worst, I was ill for a long time and it took me over a year to recover, but seven years later I'm fine, other than my short term memory was affected and I still struggle sometimes with that.

I imagine you are keeping away from Dr Google for fear of scaring yourself, so I had a look for you, and the first thing I came across is v positive:

Most people make a full recovery from sepsis

My DC has sepsis when he was three days old, after major open chest surgery. It was a scary few days but he overcame it with no lasting issues.

My mum and dad went away for a UK city break about five years ago and my mum had been complaining of a UTI. In the middle of the night, she woke my dad up babbling nonsense, hallucinating with fever, etc. The front desk of the hotel called an ambulance and she was blue-lighted to hospital, where she was diagnosed with sepsis.

My dad called me and he was crying, the first time I’ve ever heard him cry in my life. She was in hospital for several days and her condition was critical but she overcame it. She has been left with some residual health anxiety due, in part, to that experience but her health has been absolutely fine.

Wishing your SIL all the best and a speedy recovery Flowers

My dad had it after surgery a couple of years ago and it was scary and awful but he recovered really well and is super healthy now. She's in the right place!

Retrievemysanity · 28/06/2021 19:38

My friend’s daughter had sepsis and was very seriously ill a couple of years ago. She has other health conditions so it was quite worrying but she pulled through and is now a healthy 16 year old causing her mum stress for all the ‘normal’ reasons Grin

amusedbush · 28/06/2021 19:38

(Sorry, the city break was mentioned but I didn’t clarify - they were hundreds of miles away from home in an unfamiliar hospital, to make it scarier! 🙈)

Sunshinesandice · 28/06/2021 19:39

I had sepsis after a bad c section and fully recovered xx

Batsy · 28/06/2021 19:40

my dad recovered from it 5 times over 20 years. Smile all related to illness/operations. He was for a long time, technically a medical miracle after the 2nd time!

DaphneduM · 28/06/2021 19:41

My husband got sepsis from a scratch from a feral cat. He was hallucinating and got the tracks up his arm. He was treated at A and E and had to spend several days in hospital but he made a full recovery.

RizzleRazzle · 28/06/2021 19:42

I had a nephrostomy in my kidney and spoke with lots of others who had one in a nephrostomy support group mainly due to kidney stones. Lots of them had sepsis and recovered, two were pregnant at the time.

Thinking of you xx

Bobrosspaintbrush · 28/06/2021 19:43

Hi OP, I’m sorry this is happening at the moment.
My mum had this very same thing a few years back, kidney stone stuck, there wasn’t any surgeons available at the hospital where she was and was waiting for a bed at another hospital to become free .
Anyway during the wait to transfer she developed sepsis, needed emergency surgery and ended up in intensive care. It is very worrying but she recovered well after this ordeal.

DD had sepsis with kidney infection, was v poorly but strong antibiotics worked and she recovered fully.

DH had it and was also incredibly sick but after a couple of tried of different antibiotics rallied round.

ThePlantsitter · 28/06/2021 19:46

My mum had sepsis, her kidneys failed & even when the sepsis went they thought she might have to have dialysis for the rest of her life. She have a full recovery though and ten years later is fit as a fiddle. Actually it gave her a new lease of life and she's better emotionally than she was before. Thinking of you though; it is a terrifying time. Flowers

I had Sepsis 4 years ago, it came out of absolute nowhere and I went from fine to very poorly in about 48 hours and was ill for for a few weeks, however I am ok now. It took about a year to get back to full strength but considering how ill I was I wasn't surprised. Its a nasty illness and sending all my best to your sister in law.

RJnomore1 · 28/06/2021 19:47

I had sepsis, and peritonitis, and pneumonia and a collapsed lung.

I wouldn’t recommend it but I lived to tell the tale after emergency surgery and three odd weeks in hospital including HDU.

Fingers crossed. They’re very very good at looking after people.

Fitforforty · 28/06/2021 19:49

I had spesis after giving birth to DD1. It was all fine in the end.

LarsErickssong · 28/06/2021 19:50

I had sepsis after my appendix burst a few years although luckily didn't end up in ICU. To say I felt crap is an understatement but I was only in hospital for a week after developing it and some of that was because I had to have a drain fitted in my stomach for 5 days. No lasting effects, it probably took about 4 weeks for my energy levels to start returning to normal.
It seems scary as it happens so fast but once the right anti biotics have been started it can clear up pretty fast.

Faevern · 28/06/2021 19:51

Yes my BIL had exactly the same caused by kidney stone blockage. He was ill with sepsis and fully recovered within a few weeks. My DGD had neonatal sepsis and was very ill but is totally fine now. My other BIL other side of family had meningitis and sepsis and he is also fully recovered. These events are separated by decades but the kidney stones were last year.

Mama1980 · 28/06/2021 19:51

I developed sepsis as did my 24 week preemie ds2 after his birth. I was critically ill for a while as was he but we both pulled through.
I hope your sister in laws operation goes well.

Menora · 28/06/2021 19:53

My friend had sepsis and made a full recovery

Ozanj · 28/06/2021 19:54

I know of someone who had meningitis, sepsis and Cancer together while pregnant. It was touch and go for a while but she’s recovered well and is now running around after a ten year old. Try to remain positive for your DB.
