My lovely sister-in-law is very seriously ill. She had bad pain yesterday, ended up in hospital, was moved to HDU and then today moved to intensive care. They suspected sepsis. Turns out she has a kidney stone causing a blockage, leading to infection and sepsis. She's in theatre now getting a stent to relieve the blockage.

I'm so worried about her, and my poor brother. Please, if you've got good stories about recovering from sepsis, can you share them? I am hundreds of miles away and wish I could be there to give my brother a big hug.

Our dd had sepsis at 8 weeks old. We were told to get our family members and the priest when they didn't think she would make it through the night. I didn't make the calls and she turned a corner and made a full recovery. She is now a tornado in our house, always singing and dancing and chattering away.

My partner has had it twice now and recovered ok each time, staying in intensive care for a while. He had additional issues but came through it OK.

SeeYouInFive · 28/06/2021 21:57

I know someone who had sepsis twice. They never figured out the cause of the infection but five years on and she’s absolutely fine.

Hi
sorry it's happening but for reassurance my sister had sepsis when she was in labour but she fought it and touch wood no long term effects .
I hope your sister in law will come through it . Sending love x

Cowbells · 28/06/2021 22:06

My dad is in his 80s and has it several times a year. He recovers every time.

Blue4YOU · 28/06/2021 22:20

So sorry to hear this OP.
My mum, at 73, had endocarditis (heart infection) on top of heart failure, double pneumonia (she had no idea), developed sepsis, also had UTIs, a hospital superbug, anemia, high blood pressure and underlying it all - myeloma (blood cancer).
She was in hospital for 3 months.
She’s had open heart surgery since.
She’s fighting fit!

Staringouttosea · 28/06/2021 22:20

My son had sepsis when he was 7. We were told at A&E that if I had left it another hour (as suggested by my GP surgery), there would have been nothing they could have done to save him. It's now a cool story to tell his mates!

If caught in time, there is no reason why she wont have a full recovery. Thinking of you-its a scary time.

I had sepsis 3 times due to a nephrostomy in my kidney whilst I was pregnant it was awful however I am ok and so is my baby

How old is your SIL? Have they started her on anti biotics? Xx

Oh gosh that must have been horrible, I'm so glad you're both ok.

She is 50 but a very young 50 - she's very fit and healthy. She is on antibiotics now.

I'm sorry to hear about your SIL OP.
My DD had sepsis at three weeks old. She arrived at A&E floppy and listless and they literally rushed her through and started working on her. Later that day her heart rate spiralled and she crashed and we were told that they had put her into a medically induced coma.
When I asked if she'd be ok they said they couldn't promise but were doing all they could. Literally the worst moment of my life.
However she fought it off and is now nearly 7 and perfectly healthy.
Sending my very best wishes to you and your family and hoping your SIL makes a full recovery.

elliejjtiny · 28/06/2021 22:39

I had sepsis along with my newborn son, 7 years ago. Spent 2 days in HDU and ds spent 5 days in nicu. We both made a full recovery.

Hugoslavia · 28/06/2021 22:39

My husband collapsed from Sepsis (stemming from a throat infection) and was blue lighted to hospital. It was touch and go and he ended up in a coma on life support and on dialysis. That was 4 years ago and he's still with us. His kidneys magically started reworking. I won't lie, his recovery has been a long slog and he still suffers from some fatigue/digestive issues, but otherwise is fine. We were told that he was the sickest person in intensive care at the time. In fact, I wouldn't panic over your sil being in ITU. It's just as it says on the tin - a place where you receive active care, as opposed to other wards which are often for recuperation. And the care in ITU is the best of the best. Also, the early diagnosis of Sepsis has come such a long way in the last 4 years, so there's a good chance that it was flagged before she got into the final stages of septic shock.

thaegumathteth · 28/06/2021 22:42

I wasn't in ICU but I've had sepsis twice from kidney infections. It did take me a while to get better in that I just felt utterly exhausted and lots of UTIs but I did recover and now they know it's sepsis they'll know how to treat it. Thinking of you.

Hugoslavia · 28/06/2021 22:43

Just to add that, whilst sepsis can progress fairly quickly ( usually over the course of 48 hours, with acceleration at the end), the term 'Sepsis' covers all stages of the immune response to the infection. It's not necessarily life threatening if monitored and treated early on. And the fact that she was already in hospital lies in her favour.

NameChange74567 · 28/06/2021 22:47

I had urinary sepsis when I was 37w pregnant with DC2, I was in hospital when I went into septic shock. I was in the labour ward as I was having contractions, and they moved me to HDU. I was given lots of fluids, antibiotics, they put in an arterial line, we both made a full recovery and we're home a week later.

CandyLeBonBon · 28/06/2021 22:52

I've been in hospital with sepsis twice.

cultkid · 28/06/2021 23:05

As long as they have done cultures to make sure she is on the right anti biotics

It's so lovely to see a
Woman say nice things about her SIL

Sending much love make sure she stays on top of pain and laxatives too

I had almost exactly the same OP and I'm absolutely fine now.
Went to hospital 3 years ago with sudden agonising pain. They said it was fibroids, kept me in for 5 days on antibiotics then sent me home. The second the antibiotics stopped I was very very ill again (went to the GP 4pm for bloods and at 11pm got a call from the doctors, they had literally just got my results and told me to get to the hospital immediately). Was in for 2 weeks in which time they correctly diagnosed a kidney stone blocking the tube out of my kidney. Operation to drain the puss/liquid and insert a stent. They tried non invasive technique's to remove it but in the end I had to have an operation 6 months after I first found out about it.

I'm not going to lie, it was a horrible 6 months. Literally didn't eat a thing for 6 weeks, lost 3 stone and couldn't walk more than a few minutes. However, I have 100% recovered now (although they have said I am likely to get kidney stones again in my life). The only difference to before is I need to drink more (which is healthy anyway) and there is a recommended diet to minimise the risk in the future.

36degrees · 28/06/2021 23:10

My friend had sepsis from an ear infection that she was putting off going to the GP about. She was in ICU completely out of it for 3 days but made a full recovery after a couple of weeks in hospital.

She also has some health anxiety as a result, as mentioned by a PP. I think that's quite common so maybe something to support your SIL with further down the line. I hope she's feeling better soon.

Fibrosucks00 · 28/06/2021 23:22

My nan had it twice while elderly, she's 99 now.

WaverleyPirate · 28/06/2021 23:27

I know two people who had srpsis. One ended up in ICU. Both recovered with no after effects.

timtam23 · 29/06/2021 00:04

I had postpartum sepsis, was pretty ill but was able to stay on HDU rather than ITU. I was on 5 different IV antibiotics and had various lines put in for monitoring. It was frightening at the time but I made a full recovery.

MissTrip82 · 29/06/2021 00:24

The majority of people with sepsis recover. She is getting source control with the stent. The most likely outcome by far is that she will get better.

bananabanana67 · 29/06/2021 01:01

i’ve had it twice. once from an ovary infection and once from severe eczema. totally fine now!

Yaya26 · 29/06/2021 01:41

I had sepsis in 2010. I had a late miscarriage at 22 weeks and developed sepsis. It affected my heart and I had to be resuscitated. I remember the doctors constantly checking my feet. I bounced back fairly quickly and discharged myself from hospital. . I was told I was very lucky and that my recovery was down to being a fit person beforehand. No lasting effects that I’ve noticed. I hope your sister in law recovers quickly. X
