What shoes does your toddler wear for a school princess dress up?

Just that really. My dd (3) is having a princess dress up thing at her preschool next week. I myself haven't been into dressing up as a kid and my dd hasn't really been watching any Disney movies etc. But I don't want her to be left out so I am planning on getting her a princess outfit. What shoes do your children wear when dressing up as a princess? Do they wear matching shoes? I can only see matching shoes on Disney website but they have very bad reviews about the heel breaking. Also as dd is only 3 I don't really like her wearing shoes with a heel. The children usually wear trainers to preschool on normal days.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Tia

She needs to wear trainers for nursery, and make sure the costume isn't too long and won't get in her way when going to the toilet.

Kittykatmacbill · 28/06/2021 13:32

Just normal shoes and normal clothes with princess costume over the top.

zoeydollie · 28/06/2021 13:36

Personally I'd just make/buy a crown and put her in a party dress or something sparkly she already has rather than order and elaborate disney costume, especially as she doesn't know the characters.

Trainers without a doubt.

OnASwankyMarleyPond · 28/06/2021 13:41

As others have said, I’d put her in normal clothes - however you could go for a party style shoe that could be used again?

These were bought for my 2yo by her big sister and went down a treat! The smaller sizes have an elastic strap to keep them on: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-childrens-isabella-glitter-ballet-pumps/multi/p3135993

OnASwankyMarleyPond · 28/06/2021 13:42

normal shoes* even 🙄

Maryann1975 · 28/06/2021 13:45

They might be dressing up as Princesses, but they will still be running about outside, using the ride ins/cars/bikes and going up and down the slide, so definitely need proper shoes or trainers on their feet rather than any kind of sparkly party shoe that will come home ruined after their first wear.

What are the boys dressing up as? princesses? or princes?

or bloody pirates... ?

VienneseWhirligig · 28/06/2021 14:22

I'd just put her in a nice party dress, her usual shoes, and say she's going as Princess Charlotte...

WaltzingTilda · 28/06/2021 15:18

Thank you for replying, much appreciated. Boys are dress as pirates or superheroes

Send her as a pirate! pair of leggings, a striped tshirt and make a hat. Enough of this "girls are princesses, boys are superheros rubbish!"

YelloYelloYello · 28/06/2021 15:40

Boys are dress as pirates or superheroes
Wtf, have they actually specified that girls are to come and princesses and boys are to come as pirates/superheros? Or have they just said it’s a dress up day?

God that's depressing.

I'd be tempted to send her with a toy stethoscope as Princess Pearl from Zog.

Ugh! That’s so awful! 🤢
StevieNix · 28/06/2021 15:49

I think some trainers would be cute and practical! Also if you don’t have a specific princess dress I would just put her in a sparkly party type dress if she has one - no point buying a costume especially unless you think she would enjoy using it for dress up afterwards anyway

UhtredRagnarson · 28/06/2021 15:50

Urgh!! Gender stereotyping children aged 3at nursery. I wouldn’t conform to this Op.

Germolenequeen · 28/06/2021 15:52

Can't believe the gender stereotyping - I'd be having a word with Nursery - where's the diversity that is meant be be promoted 🤨

SBAM · 28/06/2021 16:00

When our nursery did pirates and princesses day (is this an actual thing?) I sent my daughter as a pirate, and if the nursery my son is at do it then I’ll happily send him in a crown and frilly skirt.

But to answer your actual question, whatever shoes she normally wears. Clarks have some sparkly trainers if you wanted to get something fun though

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 28/06/2021 16:02

whatever is safe and comfortable

WaltzingTilda · 28/06/2021 18:16

Thank you all for replying. Sorry I should have been clearer , they sent an email saying next week x day is a dress up day and please dress your little one as princess/pirate/superhero. They didn't specify girls are to dress up as princesses and boys as pirate/superhero. I did consider sending dd dressed as superwoman but changed my mind as I think she'll probably like a princess dress more than a superwoman dress.

A few of DDs friends mums were telling me that their children have started watching Disney films , and I feel bad that I haven't introduced dd to Disney films. But I am not sure if a 3 year old would sit through a 90 minute film? (felt a bit awkward asking them, so I didnt!) I also don't really want dd to start watching movies so young , but I am also worried that she won't have things in common with other little ones and would be clueless about Disney princesses when teachers talk about them and she will eventually feel/be left out Sad. At what age did your little ones start watching Disney movies ?

Normal shoes.

Don't feel bad! My DS didn't watch TV until DD was born. He was nearly 3 and I needed some sofa time. DD just grew up with it because her big brother watched Thomas etc.

When I caved and got Disney plus for her 4th birthday during lockdown. Although she is rarely allowed to watch it in one sitting.

Accessorize have lovely princess and superhero costumes which are things like capes and masks so your child can’t grow out of them for a few years.

WaltzingTilda · 28/06/2021 18:30

Thank you for replying. I think I might be able to get away with not introducing her to Disney just yet then! I've already ordered her outfit online as I needed it delivered in time for next week, but will definitely look at Accessorize so I can get stuff for her in future x
