Why am I a walkover

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 10:05

Hello all

Looking for advise really

I am a walkover

I take on too much at work
Never say no when people ask for extras

Changed jobs recently and went ahead with the work
Never got an official start date
It's been ten weeks and no pay
But they asked me to keep working

Wtf have I got myself into??

Can they insist I stay with no pay or should I just say sorry it's no longer possible

Please go easy on me

Ask your boss in a non confrontational way that there must have been an admin error and you have not been paid yet

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 25/06/2021 10:07

It’s totally reasonable to ask

CormoranStrike · 25/06/2021 10:07

I think you need to call an immediate meeting with your line manager and demand clarity, a written contract, immediate payment of money owning and clarity for the future.

ACAS may be able to advise. Do you have a Union?

And how are you affording you live? This is so unfair on you and you cannot let it continue.

Dillydollydingdong · 25/06/2021 10:09

No of course you don't have to carry on working with no pay. They're in breach of contract which would entitle you to leave now.

idontlikealdi · 25/06/2021 10:09

Of course they can't insist. You need to grow a pair and ask for what you're owed. And then leave.

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 10:10

Thank you guys I already have

I have sent emails over the past 6 weeks
Sent everything needed

Can they insist I work out my leave if I leave now?
I never got an official start date !!!

Is this a legit company, with an HR department etc?

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 10:14

Yes it is

I made the mistake of starting without the official start date

They were desperate for staff as many had just left

Lesson learnt 😢😳😳

Contact acas. Then put that in writing and tell them you won't be in until the money is in your account.
That is shocking treatment.of you. Are you able to say what position it is or type of organisation?
Can you prove you've worked there all this time?
Good luck OP. There are courses you can do on self assertiveness if you think that would help.

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 10:28

Thank you @IdblowJonSnow
Don't want to out myself
But it is a highly qualified position
Could have got so much more money elsewhere

What have I done
Chalk it down to experience

Just wish I wasn't so worried about what they will do to me if I say sorry that's enough now
I'm gone

Thanks all much appreciate the help

Should I put it all in writing to manager and HR?

OP posts:
Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 11:01

My manager and maybe HR I think?

You need a meeting face to face (or online face to face, if Covid) now. This is ridiculous. If true.

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 11:32

It's true

Wish it wasn't to be honest and I accepted offers elsewhere

Why would I lie?

DownWhichOfLate · 25/06/2021 11:33

Highly qualified and not asking to be paid don’t usually go hand in hand. Just tell them you haven’t been paid. No big deal doing that, is there?

Fitforforty · 25/06/2021 11:36

Start applying for other jobs now. They are are rubbish company and a sinking ship.

Speak to management. Either face to face or via phone if face to face or zoom is not possible. Say you need paying or you will take them to small claims court. Follow up the meeting with an email saying just to confirmed that today we discussed x, y and a and you promised a, b, c if this is not resolved by xx.xx.xxxx then I will be filling a claim with the small claims court.

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 11:37

I sent multiple emails to my manager and HR

But I kept working without the pay as they were short staffed

Who works for almost 3 months without getting paid? It's insanity.

UserAtRandom · 25/06/2021 11:41

So what responses have you had to your many emails? If you've had vague wishy washy "we're looking into it" you need to respond with a date by which you want a resolution. I'd suggest today.

I'd also suggest actually speaking to your manager. Much harder to avoid you.

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 25/06/2021 11:43

Why were you not on this at the end of the first month?

You need to go and speak to your manager and HR today and tell them you need paying or you’re not coming back.

What the hell are you living on? Fresh air?

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 12:49

It's insanity yes
But they were so stuck and didn't want to let them down
Hence being a walk over

Trying to improve 😢😢😢😢😢

UserAtRandom · 25/06/2021 12:59

So what have you done since you first posted on MN three hours ago?
Not being a walkover means being pro-active and standing up for yourself.

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 25/06/2021 13:20

Have you gone and spoken to your boss and HR?

Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 14:59

Yes I have she will contact them next week :/

OP posts:
Queenie6655 · 25/06/2021 15:17

I did email plenty of times

I really should have said - no more work I until I'm paid

Lesson learnt guys

Thanks for the replies
