Does your 11 - 14 year old know his or her address?

Mentioned elsewhere on here that some school children don’t know their addresses. Could your child write down/input on a computer their home address (or addresses) in full, including postcode(s) from memory, if asked?

My 9 year old does

BlusteryLake · 24/06/2021 20:01

My children have been able to do this from age 8. They also know mobile number by heart. I think it an important life skill.

I taught DD when she was 5, in case of emergencies.

Yes, my dc all know their address and postcodes - youngest is 10. They all report their own COVID lateral flow tests, so complete competent in filling in forms about themselves.

Wombat24 · 24/06/2021 20:06

We had to write out our address in primary school in the mid-70s.

I'd be worried if a 14yo was struggling with their address.

kowari · 24/06/2021 20:06

15 year old does. Knew the address at 11 when we moved in. Only knows the postcode because of needing it online.

ObviousNameChage · 24/06/2021 20:07

DD could fully since 8.

From 5 she knew bits and bobs , including the closest train station, but the postcode was still a bit iffy.

Fitforforty · 24/06/2021 20:09

I’ve taught at 14 year old who didn’t know his address, this was about 10 years ago. My 5 year old could tell you the house number street and area and make a good stab and writing it down.

kowari · 24/06/2021 20:09

He knew his address when he started school at 4, but not the postcode I dont think, though that was overseas where the postcode was only a number for the town or suburb.

AnnaSW1 · 24/06/2021 20:12

My 3 year olds too. I think it's important!

DameAlyson · 24/06/2021 20:15

Secondary school age children don't know their addresses???

My parents taught me to say my full name and address when I was no older than four - I assume in case I got lost.

That was back in the days when you wrote thank you letters to grandma and aunties, once you could write, so you learned to write your address at the top of the letter.

Scarby9 · 24/06/2021 20:17

I am always surprised at 11 year olds who don't know their own middle names, or who know what they are but not how to spell them, whenit cimes to Y6 SATs.
One year this prompted me to ask a class to write their fill name and address. Only sbout 6 could though most - not all - knew their road and house number.
There is a recording of me and my cousins chanting off our full names and addresses at the ages of 4 and 3. It was one of our party tricks!

Yellowbrickrobe · 24/06/2021 20:18

My children could from three years old!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 24/06/2021 20:18

we recently had a (small, COVID compliant) party for 9 and 10 year olds, where I collected them from school and dropped them home. I correctly assumed that by that age they'd all know their addresses.

BendingSpoons · 24/06/2021 20:18

That's worrying! My 5yo has known our number and road since 3yo. We haven't taught her the postcode yet but definitely will well before 11!

Hellocatshome · 24/06/2021 20:20

Yes but I wouldn't be suprised if some didn't. I took a mini bus load of 10/11 year olds to a trampoline park where we needed to give their dates of birth to sign in. Half of them didn't know their birthday!!!

flightofthecrow · 24/06/2021 20:23

Yes. from when she was little 5 ish. and telephone number..in case I lost her.

rainbowunicorn · 24/06/2021 20:23

Yes of course

Nicolastuffedone · 24/06/2021 20:25

My niece knew her address when she was in nursery around 4yrs old

JackieTheFart · 24/06/2021 20:25

Honestly, my 12 year olds would struggle. They have SEN though with lots of extra support at school.

My 9 year old does though.

SuddenArborealStop · 24/06/2021 20:25

My three year old knows the area name, estate name and can read the house number. He wouldn't put all that together into an address though.

aggathapanthus · 24/06/2021 20:26

Of course they did. Barring SEN, why wouldn’t they?

borntobequiet · 24/06/2021 20:27

Thanks for your replies - like many of yours, my kids learnt their addresses (and landline numbers - no mobiles then) from about 5 yo, also their grandparents’. But some of the (secondary) children I taught certainly didn’t.

yes to address but am sure he's forgotten house phone number -- we stopped using it years ago

thelegohooverer · 24/06/2021 20:28

Dd could from 7. Ds is 12 and can’t remember his birthday, never mind a phone number or address but can tell me about the different categories of Roman gladiators and every Greek myth ever. The joys of asd.
