Party bags, are these ok?

It’s my dds 5th birthday party on Saturday,

So far for the bags we have a foam glider, tattoo, and obviously cake. Maybe some sweets?

But I bought these to go in them, will they be ok? I bought dinosaur ones for the boys.

Some girls prefer unicorns to dinosaurs. Others prefer dinosaurs. Some boys prefer unicorns, others dinosaurs. You'll never please all of them.

I once got round it by doing pick n mix party bags, where they chose fourbor five but needed spares (which weren't wasted, they went in the Rainbows prize box). But that was pre Covid.

NeedNewKnees · 22/06/2021 12:05

Doing different party bags for boys and for girls is absolute nonsense.

SilverBirchWithout · 22/06/2021 12:05

@Stichintime

What do you mean, never existed?
Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous - but there’s never been a Glitter/Rainbow era 😃
covetingthepreciousthings · 22/06/2021 12:05

Another one who would be annoyed by boy / girl party bags.

I'd just do unicorns for all of them, I have a DS similar age, he'd just be happy with any colouring set and wouldn't care if it was unicorns or pink.

MenaiMna · 22/06/2021 12:05

Do give unicorn bags if it's a unicorn party...If unicorns aren't for boys how did the unicorns make the baby unicorns? Sorry, I know there not real but just twisting the stupid arguments of bully kids telling my primary daughter that (her favourites) dinosaurs were for boys - and she was sassy enough to say "if there's no girl dinos why are there baby dinos?" Similar to "this Dino t-shirt is for girls because I'm a girl and I'm wearing it".

I love a good party bag thread! What better to get you in a party mood than a debate about stereotyping and appropriateness of mixing extinct and imaginary creatures.

Oh my actual god. I’m far from sexist. There are only 3 boys coming, and all 3 of them are my friend’s boys. I’m 100% sure they won’t be offended.

Of course they existed…..they are our national animal!
😉

I have a unicorn loving son and a dinosaur loving daughter, but wouldn't expect dinosaurs at all at a unicorn party. I would give them all unicorns. At a dinosaur party I would expect dinosaurs. That said, any party bag is a bonus.

I'm sure they wouldn't be offended. But YOU would be perpetuating the stereotype that there are Boys Things and Girls Things.

That's not a message I'd want to drum into my 5 year olds, but you do you.

Well done on raising that child
Berryofstraw · 22/06/2021 12:22

My 5 year old boy would be over the moon with a unicorn one Smile

Insertfunnyname · 22/06/2021 12:23

50% of unicorns are male. Otherwise how would they reproduce?

50% of dinosaurs were female.

So how can dinosaurs not be for girls and unicorns not be for boys?

pollylocketpickedapocket · 22/06/2021 12:28

@WaitroseAldi

Because it’s a unicorn party?

Also, I’m pretty sure 5 yo boys wouldn’t be happy with a unicorn colouring set.

I think both too.
SleepingStandingUp · 22/06/2021 12:29

@Stichintime

Unicorn party: unicorn party bag. Were unicorns and dinosaurs on earth at the same time? If not you are bringing a random creature into the mix. This is the bit that bothers me.
Of course Unicorns and Dinosaurs didn't coexist, dinosaurs were long extinct before humans
1forAll74 · 22/06/2021 12:33

Party bags were not a thing when my two children were youngies. The party child received presents, The little guests came for a fun party, that had some nice food and birthday cake of course,,some games, playing in the garden if good weather, maybe some singing and dancing, and they all went home happily after going somewhere special.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/06/2021 12:33

What about Narwhals? Are they for boys or girls? Or does it depend on the length of their eyelashes?

Alternatively, ask their mum if they would prefer unicorn or dinosaur colouring kits., Since she's your friend....

SleepingStandingUp · 22/06/2021 12:45

Narwals so seem to have been absorbed into the girl. Along with Llama's, sloths and pineapples

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/06/2021 12:48

@1forAll74 Party bags were not a thing when my two children were youngies. how old are you children? Am assuming in their 50’s at least. Party bags we’re definitely a thing in the 80’s I remember being given them.

cocoloco987 · 22/06/2021 12:55

I think the glitter/rainbow era is now! OP they are a good party bag gift. Dd and all her friends love stationary especially when it's mini. Also all the rage is fidget toys, you can get little keyring ones in home bargains for 49p

Hallyup6 · 22/06/2021 13:01

They're absolutely fine. You should have known that this would descend into an unnecessary debate about how sexist they are though! The kids won't actually care. If it's genuinely ok to give either character to either sex (and of course, it is), then it's absolutely bloody fine to give unicorns to girls and dinosaurs to boys.

MyFloorIsLava · 22/06/2021 17:31

50% of dinosaurs were female.

So how can dinosaurs not be for girls and unicorns not be for boys?

In Jurassic Park 100% of the dinosaurs were female to prevent natural reproduction. There was a big hooha because apparently Hasbro marketed the velociraptor toys as male.
