Yorkshire Puds

Do people eat Yorkies with anything? For years I only had them with roast beef & occasionally filled with bangers & mash but they seem to be served with all kinds of meat. I certainly wouldn’t eat them with lamb for example.

Anything.. If even cooked some on their own if I fancy it.

My late gran gave them to us with golden syrup as a pudding she said it's a baked pancake essentially. It was good but I don't think I would now.

Also stuffing balls I'd happily do with anything

lynsey91 · 21/06/2021 18:39

We have yorkshire puddings with any roast dinner. We are vegetarian so don't have any meat with them

Crabwoman · 21/06/2021 19:02

I have mine with anything served with gravy. Unless it involves dumplings.

I read about these Yorkshire pudding pies the other day. I like the sound of those.

Pumpkinpops · 21/06/2021 19:07

Mmmm I love Yorkshire puddings. Would eat with any meat. I love the sound of just Yorkshire wirh gravy. Must get to Yorkshire sometime!

caringcarer · 21/06/2021 19:27

Always with Roast beef, pork or chicken. Don't eat lamb. Toad in the hole and I even made some Yorkshire Pudding Dinosaurs once in a silicon mould as a joke at eldest sons birthday party buffet as he was always asking for them. Each mould had 6 Dino's in and I cooked 3 batches. Toad in the he hole is a favourite too. I make them from scratch, no Aunt Bessie's in our house.

LadyPenelope68 · 21/06/2021 19:30

If you’ve got gravy with a meal then it’s acceptable to have Yorkshire’s!

Crankley · 21/06/2021 19:48

I love them with all roast dinners but my favourite is as a pudding cooked with Victoria plums.

Gertie75 · 21/06/2021 19:52

I only used to have them with beef but since learning how to cook them from scratch and not rely on the (rather rubbish) Aunt Bessie's I now have them as often as I can.

onlyhereforthefood · 21/06/2021 19:54

With every roast in this house!

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 21/06/2021 19:55

With any roast or sausages but save some for afters with jam and custard.
The carvery near me serves them with full English breakfast.

ReachedTheEndofCake · 21/06/2021 19:55

Grew up in North Yorkshire, had them with all meat on a Sunday roast, extras made for Sunday teatime with golden syrup/jam.

Also giant plate sized ones filled with anything from sausages/stew/mince and onions to chicken tikka/balti (personal favourite)

All homemade, even the giant ones.

“If in doubt, stick it in a Yorkshire”

JackieTheFart · 21/06/2021 20:00

My mum has very strong opinions on roast dinners.

Yorkshire’s only with beef.
Stuffing only with chicken.
Mint sauce only with lamb.
Apple sauce only with pork.

Me, I’ll have everything with everything, except the sauces.

I don’t make Yorkshire’s with sausage and mash but I might now this thread has opened up that possibility! I do like a toad in the hole with mash but that’s not quite the same...

TSSDNCOP · 21/06/2021 20:35

With any roast.

Arbadacarba · 21/06/2021 20:38

I'm terrible at making Yorkshire Puds - same goes for pancakes, I just can't do batter. My Yorkshire Puds end up like tree bark Sad.

I live in Yorkshire, so that's quite embarrassing.

MirandaMarple · 21/06/2021 22:03

They're too good to just eat with beef.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/06/2021 22:25

@Arbacadarba, true. It was a long time ago but my Yorkshire student landlady used to serve Yorkshire pudding - with sultanas in! - and gravy, as a first course before the meat.
I was a bit startled at first but in fact it was very nice.

LL was in her 60s and told me her family had been very poor when she was a child. She still liked a lot of offal, inc. chitterlings, and once gave me some cold meat that looked a bit like tongue (which I wasn’t mad about anyway) but paler.
‘D’you like that, love?’ she asked.
‘Yes,’ I lied politely. ‘What is it?’
‘Udder.’ 😱

CurryLover55 · 21/06/2021 22:32

That’s another thing - stuffing definitely doesn’t go with all meats!

I was never particularly bothered about them until I discovered Mary Berry’s recipe. Shop bought ones are crap in comparison. Now I make them with any roast.

However, we’re not very traditional and would only have a roast in winter.

Babynames2 · 21/06/2021 22:42

I’ll have them with any meal that has gravy. I love a large Yorkshire pud filled with stew.

I also like to recreate the toby carvery breakfast yorkies (with bits of fried chopped bacon and onion in). They’re so good!

LadyPenelope68 · 22/06/2021 07:19

@Arbadacarba

From a fellow Yorkshire person to another 🤣 try this recipe, they’re always amazing!

My Yorkshire pudding :
4oz of plain flour
Large pinch of salt
3 meduim eggs
1/2 pint of milk
Mix and let stand for 1 hour
Heat some sunflower oil in muffin tin 200c when hot and smoky ladle in the batter
Cook for 20-30mins
Voila!

Arbadacarba · 22/06/2021 07:37

Thank you, @LadyPenelope68 ! I will give that a try the next time we have beef.

TheDevils · 22/06/2021 07:40

@EverNapping

A friend from Yorkshire tells me that they must only ever be eaten with roast beef.
I'm from Yorkshire and we have them with everything. My ILs ( not from Yorkshire) were a bit surprised to find them on their Christmas dinner the first time we hosted but they agreed that it worked!!

They go with everything so no need to just limit them to beef!

AdaColeman · 22/06/2021 07:51

My mother was the Queen of Yorkshire Puddings. She used to serve them with gravy as a separate first course when we were having roast beef.

I still only serve them when having beef, though as part of the main course, not separately.

Another batter dish I like is clafoutis, with cherries or rhubarb.

jackstini · 22/06/2021 08:32

Have them with all roast meats - lovely with mint gravy & lamb
We have stuffing with all toast dinners too - but different flavours depending on the meat - sage & onion with chicken, apple with pork etc.

Also love Yorkshire pudding wraps with leftover meat (& rest of dinner!)
