How long do you expect a washing machine to last?

We seem to get through them….

Current one is faulty on and off and not sure whether to book an engineer or to buy a new one.
It’s 4 years old which I think is quite young!
It’s a Samsung ecobubble so a decent enough make.

I always get Hotpoints. They last between15 and 20 years, and are relatively cheap. None of mine has ever needed a repair and I’ve never bothered with extended warranties.

TeenMinusTests · 20/06/2021 16:18

Why don't you use Calgon OP?
In a hard water area surely you see what happens in kettles?

Musmerian · 20/06/2021 16:22

My Bosch is now nearly 16 years old and still going strong. We have a good appliance repair man who has done a couple of minor repairs but it seems to be indestructible.

Frazzled2207 · 20/06/2021 16:23

Sadly in most cases they really aren’t made to last any more. They’re made to be replaced.
Really tricky to get fixed outside a short warranty period.
5 years is probably quite good for an average washing machine. It’s a disgrace. We forked out for a stupidly expensive one from an obscure brand just because it came with a 10 y warranty (very rare). The next year the manufacturer went bust Angry. It still works after 7ish years but when it goes we’ll now have to replace which is ridiculous given how much we paid for it.

OhGiveUp · 20/06/2021 16:23

My previous one, a hoover one lasted around 20 years before dying on me. No repairs with the exception of the seal being replaced. It was used and abused for several loads per day as the kids were at home.
The one I have now is a Beko. It's around 8 years old and does 1-2 loads around 3 times a week. So far it's not given any problems, but now and again it will throw a hissy fit halfway through a wash and refuse to go any further until it's been turned off and on and the programme restarted.
Stern words have been said, sometimes with an accompanying boot to reinforce the point.

Frazzled2207 · 20/06/2021 16:24

@Crankley

My Whirlpool is twenty years old, still going.
That’s great. When you do find you need to replace it you won’t get anything nearly as reliable unfortunately.
Soontobe60 · 20/06/2021 16:24

Ive had 3 washing machines in 30 years! The one i have now is over 7 years old - possibly 10. I always buy the bigger drum size, fewest number of was cycles, and never over fill it.
Ive also only ever had 2 tumble dryers and 2 dishwashers in the same time period.

CimCardashian · 20/06/2021 16:25

@TeenMinusTests I think I read once that Calgon and equivalents doesn’t do that much?

I don’t think the issue we have is to do with limescale but I will look into the Calgon stuff again.

I do agree with an earlier poster that the more complicated the machine the more issues it can have….. same with cars too!

I expect about 9 years. I look after mine - Use Calgon, don't overload, dry seals every wash and leave the door/drawer open when not in use. I work to the rule of one repair call out - if it looks like another is required at a later date then I replace the machine.

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/06/2021 16:43

I'm on my third in 20 years, but number 2 was second hand.

It depends on the design of the washing machine (low to high use) and how often / how big your loads are

Any model will be expected to be good for an average number of cycles - but you could get a low use machine that seems to last forever or a high use machine that gives Ho the ghost

We have an ecobubble which is 6 years old, no problems so far.

Previous was an AEG which disappointingly lasted just 4 years before it had a fault that was too expensive to fix.

Justwingingit2005 · 20/06/2021 17:27

We had a new one 2 yrs ago. The delivery driver said 5 to 7 yrs if its used daily is a good life.

Tangledtresses · 20/06/2021 19:29

In the last 35 years I've had 3 washing machines all Bosch
1 I left in my old house

I don't use fabric softener, and usually half the amount of washing liquid they recommend

With a good clean out once a year

HistoriaTrixie · 20/06/2021 19:38

Whirlpool washer and a Hotpoint dryer, both bought new when I was expecting my DD in 1999. Still going strong.

trilbydoll · 20/06/2021 19:41

We had a Zanussi integrated machine in our old house which we had to replace after about 6 years, I can't remember why. We've got a Samsung freestanding one now and I'll be cross if it doesn't last 10+ years given the price.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/06/2021 19:48

First one was left in old house at 11 YO when we moved as I didn't want to go to effort of moving it for it to break shortly afterwards.

Second one lasted about 14 years. Third one is only about a year old, so too new to comment. First two were mid range brands like Bendix and Zanussi. Current one is AEG so was a bit more expensive, so I'll be disappointed in less than 10-15 years, but it does seem very good quality so fingers crossed.

WTF are the people getting 2-4 years out of them doing with them??

CimCardashian · 27/06/2021 10:12

Had the washing machine man out….. he said Samsung’s aren’t great and has fiddled with it a bit. I don’t think it will last much longer so we’ll see.

He said always buy a Bosch as if they go wrong they are easy to fix and well made, plus they’re not expensive (well the top of the range are but not all).

We have had a Miele for 21 years.

Roselilly36 · 27/06/2021 10:18

I have recently purchased a Bosch washer/dryer, it was pricy at £1000, so I hope it lasts.

randomkey123 · 27/06/2021 10:19

We've got a Samsung Eco bubble and it's been nothing but trouble. The drum has been replaced, it still doesn't do a full 1400rpm spin and it's out of warranty in August. It took 4 months to get a Samsung engineer out to do the work and that was with me harrassing them daily. I have zero hope that it will last.

Before we had a Zanussi that lasted 6 years (4 adults in the house so at least one daily wash) and we've got extremely hard water. We've had Miele, AEG and Zanussi and they've all lasted around 6 years so I don't think the quality makes that big a difference tbh. Zanussi are also much better at customer service.

Iggly · 27/06/2021 10:20

Miele has lasted us 13 years and counting. It’s had daily use since having the kids about 12 years ago.

CimCardashian · 27/06/2021 15:29

I’d love a Miele but deffo out of my budget!

@randomkey123 the Ecobubble is a Which Best Buy (I checked before I bough it) and it’s not very good at all.
