How long do you expect a washing machine to last?

We seem to get through them….

Current one is faulty on and off and not sure whether to book an engineer or to buy a new one.
It’s 4 years old which I think is quite young!
It’s a Samsung ecobubble so a decent enough make.

How many washes a week do you do.

FuzzyPenguin · 20/06/2021 15:35

I seem to break them after 2 years whatever the model. I don’t have much luck with washing machines. My parents seem to get 10 years out of theirs.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2021 15:36

My last one was a Miele and lasted 19 years. Never broke down and used at least once a day. Replaced it with another Miele.

LubaLuca · 20/06/2021 15:36

I've had my Hotpoint for about 10 years, no repairs needed so far. It gets used daily and isn't especially well looked after (I put trainers and all sorts in it).

Toottooot · 20/06/2021 15:37

2-3 years.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 20/06/2021 15:37

Longer than that considering the price of them! (fellow Samsung eco bubble owner) it's worth calling them though as I'm sure mine came with a 5 year parts, 10 year motor guarantee.

25yearsnhsworker · 20/06/2021 15:37

I have an eco bubble which came with 5 year warranty. I had so many problems in first 5 years and it was repaired many times. it is now 7 years old and still going well.
Next I am getting an AEG or Miele

DGFB · 20/06/2021 15:38

Our last one lasted 4.5 years with a daily wash. I also thought that was quite young for a decent make! Hoping to get a decade out fo the next one

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/06/2021 15:38

Brand "Privileg" (basically no name) now in her 17th year

AutoGroup · 20/06/2021 15:38

Google what's wrong. My 17yo DS has fixed my 8yo washing machine twice (two different faults) in the last year by following You Tube videos and for a grand total of £21 in parts from Ebay.

Unfortunately I don't think it's ever worth repairing if you need to call someone out.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 20/06/2021 15:39

I would hope for 5-7 years, depending on how hard you work your machine. We had a succession of washer-dryers which lasted 3 or 4 years, but there is more to go wrong there than with a washing-only machine.

AlexaShutUp · 20/06/2021 15:39

At least 10 years. My last one kept going for 15. But the really cheap models aren't built to last for more than 3-4years.

husbandcallsmepickle · 20/06/2021 15:40

Do you live in a hard water area? Might that be contributing to their shelf live?
And (before someone else says it) do you use Calgon regularly?

CimCardashian · 20/06/2021 15:50

We use it once a day on average (family of 4).

We’re in London so yes a hard water area (don’t use calgon)

Pretty sure it only had a 2 year guarantee. I have been in touch with Samsung but want to know the call out fee.

I have done the smart sense fault code thing but it says a different thing every time. When we bought it it was a Which? Best Buy but having googled the issues it has it is common.

Since I've been married I've had 3 washing machines, the first one a Hotpoint lasted 11 years. The next one a much cheaper Hoover only lasted 2 years. Wouldn't ever buy a cheap one again, so we got a Siemens 9 years ago and it's still going strong. It's the best washing machine we've had.

Eleoura · 20/06/2021 15:52

10-15yrs for me, also in hard water areas and no water softner.

Animum2 · 20/06/2021 15:56

I've got a beko basic no thrills one that I've had 10 years, but I do washing at weekends only so only 3-4 loads

Blossomtoes · 20/06/2021 15:58

I’ve had three washing machines in 30 years. I really want the current one to die - it’s about nine years old now and I want a black one - but it just keeps going. I was advised to always buy the most basic on the market - less to go wrong.

Frenchfancy · 20/06/2021 15:59

10 years. I buy bosch. Often the fault can be fixed by empying the coin trap. YouTube is your friend.

Bagelsandbrie · 20/06/2021 16:00

We had a Samsung eco bubble and it was the worst machine we’ve ever, ever had. Numerous call outs and all sorts of problems. Actually ended up emailing ceo of AO about it and they agreed to replace it for free in the end as it was so unreliable. We now have a 10kg indesit innex and had it coming on to 3/4 years and no issues at all. And it is a third of the value of the eco bubble!

Curlygirl06 · 20/06/2021 16:00

Just had this issue myself, but with another make. 5 year old Candy, 10 year parts guarantee but they have to be fitted by their engineers. I know exactly what's wrong (brushes on the motor) and rang them.
If we called out their engineers it would be £129! Admittedly I had a good deal on the washing machine when I bought it, but it only cost £169.
I told them to just send me the parts and I'll do it myself (repaired 3 washing machines with this fault plus I've put a new door seal on previously). Speaking to the parts department was mind numbingly irritating, couldn't supply the part for a variety of reasons unless I had the motor number, which meant the washing machine had to be taken apart. Again, not a problem but the bloke was so bloody irritating and unhelpful I thought, bugger it and bought a new one. My washing machine is on daily.

Bagelsandbrie · 20/06/2021 16:01

I should add we do about 3 washes a day - large family, 2 disabled people etc.

withiceplease · 20/06/2021 16:01

I'm on my second in 22 years - both Bosch

Badbadbunny · 20/06/2021 16:03

They last less and less. Mainly because they're not designed to be repaired/parts replaced. Our first lasted about 20 years, but the latest few have only lasted 3/4 years. But the price reflects that - they're now so cheap to be "disposable" - prices have barely risen over the decades which suggest cheaper/poor quality materials. We've had a repair guy for decades who used to do the repairs/replacements on older kitchen appliances, but he won't touch modern stuff as there's nothing to replace/repair - it's all "new circuit boards" now. We still use him for our really old appliances that actually have parts that can replaced.

Crankley · 20/06/2021 16:09

My Whirlpool is twenty years old, still going.
