Is there something completely “normal” and everyday that gives you the chills for no apparent reason?

Whenever I hear the jingle from an ice cream van I get that horrible swoosh of anxiety but I just got a particularly bad one!

I was upstairs, with all the windows open, when I heard a jingle which sounded extraordinarily loud and sort of echoey. It really sent shivers down my spine and made me feel very on edge.

Is there anything relatively “everyday” which sets you off?

The Thames Flood Barrier.

It's a bit like in 'The Iron Man' when he has that sort of 'trial by ordeal' with the dragon, or when Colossus gets fucked up in one of the X Men films. I feel sick seeing insanely powerful behemoths get whipped. And I feel like one day the Thames Flood Barrier is gonna get flicked aside in a 'Day After Tomorrow' sitch.

Earthenware plates and people scraping them with knives and forks

People who scrape food off a fork with their teeth 😱😱😱😱😱

BiscoffAddict · 20/06/2021 21:16

Bagpipes
Gothic churches
Big chimneys or cooling towers

Evanna13 · 20/06/2021 21:19

The sound of my doorbell or phone ringing
Someone walking around with bare feet

AuntMasha · 20/06/2021 21:27

People licking things like yoghurt tops.

Fake hair of any kind.

OhToBeASeahorse · 20/06/2021 21:28

The theme tune to Heartbeat or Where the Heart Is. I'm suddenly 10 again and its school the next day and I'm so so anxious and so so sad.

I was always fine once I was there.

We have a cylinder vacuum cleaner and I can’t bear to feel the warm air that comes out of the vent. Just thinking about it gives me the brain shudders.

meemaww · 20/06/2021 21:30

The automatic hot air blower bars in car washes…….designed to come crashing through the windscreen as you sit there, captive 😳😳😳 they give me the heebie jeebies and an overwhelming sense of dread. My car is strictly hand wash only! 😂😂

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

New Year's Eve, particularly Auld Lang Syne and the chimes. It just makes me feel horribly sad, empty and alone. I'm not a particularly 'doomy' person usually, but I do everything I can to be asleep by midnight on NYE.
This- can't stand NY!

The postman delivering mail. I get a terrible feeling of dread and it dates back to when my ex partner was harassing me and taking me to family court. This was many years ago, but I still dread receiving mail.

IceLace100 · 20/06/2021 22:02

If I think about my internal organs too much (liver kidneys stomach brain) it grosses me out so so much.

I dread it too due to issues from my childhood. Feel sick when I hear post come through the door. I make DH open all my mail for me as I feel physically sick doing it

Paper straws. I carry my metal one around with me.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/06/2021 22:12

The thought of what's under water. Obviously a part from fish

StorminaBcup · 20/06/2021 22:14

Seeing a single shoe or a teddy (or similar) on a road, especially motorways.

Agree with the poster who mentioned Auld Land Syne too, hate it.

Keepyourdistance000 · 20/06/2021 22:15

Level crossings - often go out of my way to avoid driving or walking over them.

Bridges over water, especially high bridges like the Thelwall Viaduct, QE2 or Forth Bridge - would never drive over one and am very nervous as a passenger on them.

Motorway interchanges with high bridges, e.g. Spaghetti Junction 😱

The sound of approaching thunder and seeing distant lightning, especially at night.

StorminaBcup · 20/06/2021 22:15

Also, those photos of a diver next to a blue whale. Freaks me out.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/06/2021 22:15

Wet cellophane
Vertical buildings. They look like horizontal buildings that have fallen over

Keepyourdistance000 · 20/06/2021 22:17

That terrifying bridge over the Thames which has the railway line running next to it - Jubilee Bridge I think...had a terrible panic attack on it when DH and I had to walk over it.

Nelia5 · 20/06/2021 22:18

Statues / mannequins - can’t stand next to one as it feels like they will move suddenly. It’s a genuine phobia

Balloons - one burst in my face when I was little. Absolutely terrified me when McDonald used to hand them out on sticks for kids to wave around. I literally have to cross the road when I see a kid with a balloon. Obviously I won’t have them at parties

I'm exactly the same...hate statues and mannequins. Genuinely terrified.

Also hate balloons.

Multi storey car parks....as a child I would scream hysterically when my parents parked in one
Omg SAME Shock
Comedycook · 20/06/2021 22:24

@ingridla

Oh at least I'm not the only one!

CarrieMoonbeams · 20/06/2021 22:25

That big silver metal thing that appears before a programme on Channel 4. Especially the one that swings its horrible silvery metal legs walking up a hill.

I have to look away, can't stand it!
