Is there something completely “normal” and everyday that gives you the chills for no apparent reason?

Whenever I hear the jingle from an ice cream van I get that horrible swoosh of anxiety but I just got a particularly bad one!

I was upstairs, with all the windows open, when I heard a jingle which sounded extraordinarily loud and sort of echoey. It really sent shivers down my spine and made me feel very on edge.

Is there anything relatively “everyday” which sets you off?

Abandoned shoes, either thrown up onto wires or even worse when people make (generally kids) shoes into planters. Irrationally makes me think something awful has happened!

Touching baked bean juice.

LillethCrane · 20/06/2021 19:16

Stickers. Any, but I’m particular price labels on products in corner shops. Thankfully, you don’t see as many these days thanks to scanning barcodes, but when I see them they make me go cold and shudder.

I’m an infant school teacher and the children must hate me because I never give out stickers. Every other adult seems to though, and at the end of each day the carpet is littered with them… the thought of me treading on one and it sticking to my shoe makes me feel physically unwell EnvyConfusedConfused

Teeth. I have a massive dental phobia anyway but the thought of these things growing out through your gums is horrific.

Cotton wool and peach skin against my teeth

Music that sort of whooshes - I can’t explain it, I don’t even know what kind of dance music it is - but I have to switch it off

The circus

@Chickpeasorchips

I completely understand the ice cream van one. The tune is creepy and reminds me of clowns
Didn't the Child Catcher's van in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang play a tune?

Violins.

Quiet villages in summer.

EatingAllThePies · 20/06/2021 19:23

It makes me feel better to hear I'm not the only one.

JengaNonConfirming · 20/06/2021 19:23

Floured rollong pis, even thinking about the feel and the sound makes my skin crawl Confused

Weirdfan · 20/06/2021 19:23

Stupid one but Cat in the Hat makes me shudder, I have to look away if there's a picture on tv or FB and I feel sick and shaky afterwards. No idea why but I genuinely can't control it Blush

Unprecedentedusername · 20/06/2021 19:28

Bare Feet in sandals
Long straight roads with no traffic
Empty lavender flower heads - think that’s trypophobia

Sellingstress · 20/06/2021 19:29

Exposed hull and underside of large ships
Blood pressure being taken
A dried, chapped heel in a flip flop or sandal

Shudder.

EatingAllThePies · 20/06/2021 19:30

Oh this is interesting I hated them as a child too but not sure why. Slightly embarrassed to admit that I've never actually parked alone as an adult in a multi story. I've paid more or driven further to avoid them Blush

MeowPurrGrr · 20/06/2021 19:33

@AColdDuncanGoodhew

Ooh I cant even say trypophobia cos then all I see in my mind are those google images!

I never used to have this, it only reared its ugly head when I was browsing some bags and seen one with an “ostrich skin” design and bang! Utter disgust.

Wahhhh it’s happening now, the horrible crawling feeling Sad

I’ve had the phobia all my life! ‘Friends’ find it funny to chase me with crumpets 😭
Dontate · 20/06/2021 19:39

The village my grandma lived in was in Wales, and not in an area that flooded.

@Lanique I’m exactly the same about birdsong and spring evenings - never come across anyone else who feels that way! They make me feel properly anxious. And I hate the cooing of wood pigeons.

I also have a recurring nightmare (fortunately it hasn’t happened to me in rl yet!) of being in a tiny rowing boat and seeing the prow of a massive container ship bearing down on me. That one inspires primal panic in me!

People eating cereal near me. It's both slurpy and crunchy at the same time and I hate it.

Wide · 20/06/2021 19:42

Omg so many for me!

I feel so sick when I hear the Lourdes-Royal song, I was pregnant at the time it was out and had morning sickness so maybe that's why

Moby-Porcelain song, that scares me!

I hate huge mushrooms, the inside layers I don't know why I jjust imagine them waving side to side

The dark sea at night

New Years Eve and the song everyone sings- I feel a fear if what's to come that year and we are totally oblivious ie death

People picking up paper hastily and ripping it really loudly

I have to shave my legs slowly because taking a chunk out of my knee or ankle makes me feel so funny

Making a fry up and the smell sticks to my hair and clothes sends me crazy

I don't like the feeling of wood in my mouth - so lolly sticks, chippy forks Envy

I can't stand lenticular pictures, or material that feels like it EnvyAngry

Aircraft engines as I’m about to board
I force myself to look to confront my fear

Piers where you can see the water through the boards

invisiblegirllj · 20/06/2021 19:54

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS

I didn't say which one because a lot of small children have it and I don't want to upset anyone whose DC does.
Pig tails?
amymel2016 · 20/06/2021 20:00

Sandwiches in Tupperware or any kind of packed lunch Envy (not envy). I’m happy eating a sandwich made by someone I don’t know in a factory but one I've made at home and then stored in a plastic box? Nope!

invisiblegirllj · 20/06/2021 20:02

Trains. I always flinch when I see them coming into the station. Like I'm going to be sucked into the tracks by some kind of weird train gravity.

High bridges. Driving over them makes me feel light headed with fear. I have to go over the Severn Bridge a couple of times per year and I hate it.

Artificial eyebrows - either very plucked or heavily painted on. They freak me out and I genuinely don't like looking at the faces of people with those weird things on them.
